We Care Because We Pray

The Feast of the Epiphany commemorates the visit of the wise men to worship the baby Jesus. Tradition tells us that their names were Caspar, Melchior and Balthassar. The men were astrologers who were looking for the star that would lead them to the promised Messiah. This was prophesied in the Book of Micah. According to the Gospel narratives, the wise men brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh with them. These gifts were very meaningful. Gold was a precious and expensive gift, and showed how important Jesus was. Frankincense is a sweet perfume which was often burned in the temple to worship God. It was a sign that Jesus should be worshipped. Myrrh was used to keep things fresh, and it was used by the women to anoint Jesus’ body when he died. By bringing it as a gift to Jesus, the wise men foretold his suffering and death.

If there is one word that is immediately associated with Francis and the Franciscans, it is poverty. Talk about it within the ecclesial circles and the Franciscans come to mind with its external expressions of simplicity and austerity. Even as it is the most identifying characteristic of our spirituality. It is also the most conflictual, hence the most divisive. The historical reason why there are at least three major Franciscan Orders (Capuchins, Conventual and Friars minor) is precisely because of the interpretation of poverty in Franciscan spirituality. In the time of Francis up to now that the issue of the spirit of poverty in the context of the times remains elusive. Franciscans at all level will always remain divided when living out of Franciscan poverty is concern. As a Province in the Philippines, there was a time that a group intended to secede from the mainstream to found their own congregation in the belief that the present set up is not any more faithful to the spirit of Francis. Many would drop our present parish commitments as they thought parochial work is inimical to fraternal and simple life. Even this parish was not spared from this excruciating dilemma in arriving at the air conditioning of the Church. Individually all of us has the burden of continuously discerning the manner of living poverty as we adopt to the signs of the times at the same time be faithful to the spirit of Francis. Behind all these divisions and dilemma is the too materialistic orientation and interpretation of living out poverty. For Francis, poverty is not the first experience; it is not so much material deprivation as in simplicity and austerity. The first and primordial experience is the generosity and abundance of God’s love as Father. Hence, the appropriate response to the generosity of God is gratitude. “Gratias tibi Deo agere”. Thanksgiving and praise is the first attitude of man before a generous Father. After thanksgiving, poverty follows. Poverty is therefore not so much material deprivation and its accompanying variants of simplicity and austerity. It is fundamentally humbling recognition that all good things comes from God. He is the source of all that is good. He is the proprietor of all goods, the owner of all. Hence in the Franciscan vocabulary, poverty is defined as “sine propio” which means “ without calling anything as one’s own “; better yet not appropriating anything as one’s

own. We are not the owners! God is. It is in this context of non-ownership that all the material ramifications should be reframed. Non-ownership means we are God’s stewards and as such goods of this earth meant for the enjoyment of the common good, not only for the indigestion of the few; it means a more equitable distribution of the earth’s resources which has been appropriated by the few. Poverty implies then a life of solidarity with the disposed in the search for just society. Solidarity includes being one in their pursuit of liberation from material poverty which in turn is the result of appropriative and acquisitive nature of man, legitimized by the systems and structures of society. Poverty is not only a negative protest but a calculated, political strategy against organized appropriation and selfishness.

Within a small community like a Church groups or religious congregation, it implies common property, sharing and accountability. It means sharing the Church’s resources for the use of the common good. The challenge of the present government for the Church to help in the drug problem by way of sharing its resources, expertise, counseling is in place. We are not owners of what we have and possess. Individually however poverty must be an expression of our interior liberation from mammon. In other words ,the voluntary poverty of the religious is only liberative if by our personal lives we are freed from the grip of mammon.

Franciscan Poverty:

An Expression of Gratitude to Generous Father

by Fr. Baltazar Obico, OFM

For Francis, poverty is not the first experience; it is not so much material deprivation as in simplicity and austerity. The first and primordial experience is the generosity and abundance of God’s love as Father.

Living the Franciscan Spirituality of Poverty

It seems like only yesterday but last it has already been already 17 years since a fellow parishioner by the name of Steve Lopez who unfortunately has gone too soon, invited me to be part of the PGH Hospital Ministry. He told me that the best way we can practice Franciscan Values is by sharing our time and resources to poor sick little children. Thus begun the weekly Tuesday visits to PGH together with its founders Mrs. Canoy, and lately Ms. Pon Chan, Mr. Peter Soo, Ms. Ella Tan, Ms. Tina Cuyco assisted by our social worker Mrs. Nimfa Dumago. Our ministry was given a budget by the parish to give medicines to the poorest of the poor who are sick but have good prognosis. This involved children of Wards 10 and 11.

How Parishioners Live the Franciscan Spirituality of Poverty

by Vince & Katrina Pacheco

It dawned on me during these visits that I could get more involved by giving my own resources to these sick children. Thus, begun the PGH Pacheco Family. I would ask Nimfa to identify the kids who needed more resources to get well as the budget of the ministry per patient was not enough. I would meet the patient and their family; get to know them and provide the needed resources. Over time this practice of mine grew from 10 families to 60 families involving 185 individuals. I made it a point to maintain contact with the family even if the patient unfortunately did not make it.

With my extended family I provided an annual summer outing, Halloween treats and Christmas party.

Most awaited one is the Christmas party where everyone gets to enjoy food, games, prizes, and the traditional Filipino custom Sabog. Each family goes home with a gift. This has become a family endeavor with the support of my wife Marissa and two daughters Katrina and Nicole. We likewise had help from the Parish Priest, Fr. Reu, who said mass and provided social halls for the venue, SYA members who served as hosts and parishioner/ministry members who provided donations.

At the end of the day our family receives countless Christmas cards and greeting’s with the phrase “wala ho kami mabigay sa inyo na materyal, ang Diyos na lang ang bahala sa inyo”. This non-material greeting motivates us to expand the Pacheco PHG Family and continue this tradition.

Happy New Year to All!

One gospel proclaimed in the New Year was about the cousin of Jesus Christ, John, the Baptizer. In his time, John was considered a strange, off-the-wall and a hairline short of being considered wretchedly insane. But he demonstrated two incredible traits that most of us are still grappling to follow daily, in our lives:

HoNESTY AND HuMIlITY.

John was honest. He admitted and didn’t deny that he was not the Messiah.

John was humble. He described himself simply as one voice crying out in the desert (because no one took his words seriously), making straight the way of the Lord (paving for the One coming after him Who is so full of awe that He will surpass any manner of human comprehension).

Like John, we are urged to become the means to point

others to Jesus and bring them to Christ. We can do that if we admit and accept our own limitations, that we are not the know-it-all. But here lies the rub. God is not a tightwad. He has dispensed gifts and talents - brilliant, beautiful, strong, and astounding - that sadly, may remain untapped (if we don’t use it or be unnecessarily coy about it) OR may catch inspiration and burst forth like a song of hallelujah, of praise and rejoicing.

Get hold of your circumstances knowing that Christ is in charge. Let us become the means to point others to Jesus, making today different than yesterday, knowing that as long as we live our life for Him, we are heading in the right path.

We decrease so that He (may) increase.

In 2017, aim for a rich life. RICH in knowledge, in compassion, in gratefulness, in adventure, in laughter, in family, in health, in sharing, in comradeship, in love, and in God.

Let us become the means to point others to Jesus, making today different than yesterday, knowing that as long as we live our life for Him, we are heading in the right path.
