From the Pastor Pastor Kevin Martin [email protected]

“New Year! New Things!”

So, happy New Year one and all! Since it is a new year, and since you know how much I love trying new things, I thought we’d kick off a new thing, bible study wise, something I’ve ac-tually been wanting to do for a long time. Wednesday, January 10th, at 5:30 pm (new time for Wednesday class!) we’ll kick off a new Pastor’s Class. But it will be something different than we’ve tried before. Usually, I like to do Bible Study on Sunday morning, and a theological topic or book discussion on Wednesday evenings. But I’ve kind of gotten away from the classi-cal purity of that intention when we started the Augsburg Confession as a Reformation Special back in October and are still on it for just one more week, before we get back to Matthew 21 on Sunday mornings. One of the happiest little things I ever backed into was when I came to Our Savior in Sep-tember 2000 and found our faithful and hard-working Deaconess Katie had a Tuesday morning bible study where she looked at the lectionary (the Scripture lessons appointed by the hymnbook) for the Sunday upcoming. I sat in on it from the start and then ungraciously just took it over from Katie because I found it was super-helpful for me in writing sermons! No one had ever suggested this to me in many years of divinity school and seminary - that one might do well to talk with the actual members, study together with them the actual Scripture lessons you’re going to preach on and see what they get out of them, or what questions/concerns it might present for them now! I’d had pastor study groups that would look at the lectionary, but that’s like letting the in-mates run the asylum if you think about it for a while… But what a wonderful and novel idea(!) - studying the Scriptures in advance of preaching on them with the congregation. I felt (like the Grinch’s heart) that my theological imagination grew 2 or 3 sizes that day! People asked ques-tions I would never have thought of, saw things in the text I had never noticed. And the real beauty of this thing was that year after year they kept finding new and previously hidden treas-ures that I had been missing just reading it all by my lonesome… so, an endless well of fresh insights! I resolved I would never be without a lectionary bible study in the congregation and the few Sundays I’ve had to write a sermon without the help of my Sanhedrin has been less pleasant! I monkeyed around with changing the Tuesday time to include more people, but moving the sa-cred hour of study from Tuesday 10:30 am to any other time did not produce good results. But then it occurred to me: in college, they have sometimes 2 or 3 sections of the same class! Hey! I could do that! So a new section of the Lectionary Class will begin Wednesday, January 10 at 5:30 pm (Why 5:30pm ? Well, we’ve found that can be a good time for meetings. You can bring some food, we can figure out how to get some, or just wait and eat afterwards. We’ll dis-cuss options…). What will you need to read or bring? Nothing! You can find the Lectionary in the front of Lutheran Service Book, but no advance work or homework is required. We provide the read-ings printed out, OT, Epistle, Gospel (we never look at the Epistle, I’m not sure why—just the OT and Gospel). And we discuss, amongst ourselves, for one hour, never more—we believe in the one hour service at OSLC! It has been told to me that this can be a great help in “getting more out of the Sunday service and sermon.” So I hope those that can will consider giving this a try. I’m committed to doing it at least till Ash Wednesday to see if it gains any traction… Happy New Year! Hope to see you Wednesday, January 10 at 5:30 pm!

PLM - Families Together Families Together Honored

GlaxoSmithKline recognized Families Together along with nine other organizations with the Impact award for building a healthier community. We are so honored to have our mission of moving families from homelessness to home recognized. We are extremely honored for the accolades, but none of this would have been possible if it were not for all of our allies who have joined us in facing the fact that more and more the face of homelessness is that of a child. Thank you to all the board members, donors, churches, corporations, and volunteers for your contributions. This award is a reflection of everything you do and belongs to you as much as it does to us.

Holiday Smiles - thank you!

Thank you so much to the individuals and churches that provided a special “Holiday Smiles” Christmas for families in our program. This year Holiday Smiles has reached 235 people with 147 of them being children! We are ecstatic with the turn out as our partnership makes holiday dreams a reality. Thank you again to all who contributed gifts for families this holiday season. We are overwhelmed with your generosity during the holidays.

Continuing Our Mission

We are extremely happy to report that as of this writing our fall fundraising campaign is going very well and we look forward to reporting the final results next month. Thanks to all who have given so generously to improve the lives of children and families experiencing homelessness in our community. If you have not yet donated, we need and welcome your help. You can make an immediate impact by donating online at www.FamiliesTogetherNC.org, or by mailing your donation to Families Together, P.O. Box 14395, Raleigh, NC 27620. Questions? Email [email protected] or 919-212-1123 ext. 231. We are sincerely grateful for any support you can provide at this critical time.

Program Needs

With the start of the New Year, we need help restocking our supplies to help families move from homelessness to independence. There is a need for toiletries, such as soap, shampoo, deodorant as well as laundry baskets. Also, our after school program pantry is running low. Donations of non-perishable snacks and juices for the children would be greatly appreciated. Contact Meghan Olesen, Community Engagement Coordinator at (919) 307-1892, or by e-mail, [email protected]. Share and help us get the word out Connect with us on Instagram (Families2ogether). You’ll also find regular updates on our Fa-cebook page (www.facebook.com/families2gether), and on Twitter (@families2gether).

Current Missionary Need $ 100,000

These children WANT to learn, their young minds are thirsty for the knowledge that a missionary teacher can give them. They will also receive the unbounded blessings that come as they hear the Gos-

pel in school daily.

We can barely comprehend the magnificent pres-ence of the Holy Spirit as this community is bap-tized in the same service. These people can now

grow in Christ together.

With fervent, sustained support of LCMS mission projects, Mission Central, located in Mapleton, Iowa, seeks to serve as an avenue for continued support for mission-aries throughout the world to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This grant would provide for a variety of necessary mission-ary resources such as orientation and training, language training and on fur-lough, various types of insurance, hous-ing, medical care, utilities, and education of missionary children, to name a few.

We Pray Together … Precious Heavenly Father, fountain and the origin of all goodness, we give you thanks for daily providing us with all that we need to support our body and soul. Help us to give generously to provide for the LCMS International Mission project to support missionaries sharing the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. May we always be content at the foot of the cross, trusting that you will always provide for our needs. In Jesus Name, we pray Amen.

For more information, questions, or to learn about us: 1-800-252-5965 www.lwml.org

WHEREAS, since the LWML at its founding in 1942 identi-fied its purpose “to develop a greater mission conscious-ness among women and to gather funds for mission pro-jects for which no adequate provision was made in the LCMS budget;” and WHEREAS, Jesus has called our LCMS missionaries to go into all the world to proclaim Him and they are indeed re-quired to provide all necessary resources to serve; and WHEREAS, Lutheran women attending this convention, empowered by the Holy Spirit, through Word and Sacra-ment, to proclaim Jesus Christ above all, can assist this endeavor of our missionaries with mite dollars and prayers; and WHEREAS, The blessed gift of money will be awarded with the greatest prayerful discretion by the knowledgeable LCMS Mission Central staff, with the recommendation and endorsement of the LCMS Office of International Mission, and given to the most current and urgent needs of our mis-sionaries waiting to serve or already in the field; therefore be it RESOLVED, That the delegates gathered at the 2017 Lu-theran Women’s Missionary League Convention in Albu-querque, New Mexico, vote the sum of $100,000 to help fund Current Missionary Need.
