Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Welcome! Thank you for coming. Joke: A woman dies and goes to heaven, and St. Peter takes her on a tour. They pass a pit where people are wailing and gnashing their teeth. She asks, “who’s down there?” St. Peter says: “Oh those are the Catholics who ate meant on Fridays.” They walk a little farther and there’s another pit with more wailing and groaning and she asks who is in there? Those are the Baptists who went to dances. And a little farther along there is another pit with gnashing of teeth, crying and ripping of garments and she says, and those people? Those are the Episcopalians who ate their salad with their dessert forks! Church Bloopers The following are actual church bulletin board bloopers found in churches across the United States.11. "Next Sunday Mrs. Vinson will be soloist for the morning service. The pastor will then speak on 'It's a Terrible Experience'." 12. "Due to the Rector's illness, Wednesday's healing services will be discontinued until further notice."13. "Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM. Please use large double door at the side entrance." 14. "Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our church and community." 15. "The eighth graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the church basement on Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy." 16. "A song fest was hell at the Methodist church Wednesday." 17. "Today's Sermon: 'How Much Can a Man Drink?' with hymns from a full choir." 18. On a church bulletin during the minister's illness: "God is good - Dr. Hargreaves is better." 19. "Potluck supper: prayer and medication to follow." 20. "The outreach committee has enlisted 25 visitors to make calls on people who are not afflicted with any church." 21. "Eight new choir robes are currently needed, due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones." 22. "The choir invites any member of the congregation who enjoys sinning to join the choir." 23. A new loudspeaker system has been installed in the church. It was given by one of our members in honor of his wife. 24. Please join us as we show our suport for Amy and Alan in preparing for the girth of their first child. Mortal: What is a million years like to you? God: Like one second. Mortal: What is a million dollars like to you? God: Like one penny. Mortal: Can I have a penny? God: Just a second. Sometimes women are overly suspicious of their husbands. When Adam stayed out very late for a few nights, Eve became upset. "You're running around with other women," she charged."You're being unreasonable," Adam responded. "You're the only woman on earth." The quarrel continued until Adam fell asleep, only to be awakened by someone poking him in the chest. It was Eve. "What do you think you're doing?" Adam demanded. "Counting your ribs," said Eve (Intros: Your name, your church and what brought you here today) God, you have made the heavens and the earth. You have revealed your beauty in creation and inspired the tool that we are about to learn about. Please help us now as we learn and hang out together.Take us deeper into understanding more about the asset map, you and your love for us.Amen. Who knows what ERD is? Who knows what the Asset map is? Great, you can help me out here today.

Presentation Notes
When we had the fires in 2007, they sent chaplain trainers out to us and 50 people were trained as chaplains. The summary is: Heal a Hurting World! Development and sustainable development (with a caveat in the US) Partners with Anglican Communion - worldwide ERD focuses on helping the vulnerable prepare for and recover from disasters through PARTNERSHIPS. It provides TOOLS and CONNECTS people

How We Work

• Connect

• Inspire

• Equip

Presenter
Presentation Notes
ERD is all about equipping the people on the ground to do the work. They are not about coming in and doing it themselves. They figure the locals are the experts on their own areas.

Video

Presenter
Presentation Notes
ERD created an online asset map to Help us connect and learn from one another. This is a national, grassroots effort to map and catalogue our many ministries and gifts. The map is searchable. Our diocese said YES to the map and our diocese is already taking part. Every Five Years Story: A reason we said yes. Now let’s watch the intro video. It’s 3 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i0Mck-83g0

How we got here

• Pilot with Diocese of Louisiana

• Basics of the tool and how it can work in one diocesan context

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Diocese of Louisiana was the first diocese to get on board. If you search their churches, you will see some awesome use of the map. http://edola.episcopalassetmap.org/ch/st-michael-all-angels-episcopal-church (pimped out with videos)

How we got here

• Second pilot with Diocese of New York

• Now 28 additional dioceses signed on—from San Diego to Maine and many in between

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We are one of the earlier adopters in this process. http://sd.episcopalassetmap.org/

Overview map

Page 10: Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response1080b7859aada3d0beaf-0bfa255627b9560d816ed2fdd9632edf.r19.c…Episcopal Relief & Development Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response Welcome!

National search

Page 11: Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response1080b7859aada3d0beaf-0bfa255627b9560d816ed2fdd9632edf.r19.c…Episcopal Relief & Development Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response Welcome!

How it works

• All assets in the Episcopal Church are mapped on their local diocesan map – Even if pins are NOT legally owned by diocese, such

as schools, monastic communities, etc. • Institutions take surveys inventorying ministries,

programs and disaster prep info • Survey information approved by admins

appointed by bishop

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Your admins are: Me, Donna Watson from St. Bart’s and Andrew Green from St. Paul, Palm Springs
Page 12: Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response1080b7859aada3d0beaf-0bfa255627b9560d816ed2fdd9632edf.r19.c…Episcopal Relief & Development Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response Welcome!

Possible risks

• Out-of-date information – Integrate into diocesan/network processes – Share best practices among dioceses on how to do

this • False information

– Diocesan map admins check data before posting

Page 13: Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response1080b7859aada3d0beaf-0bfa255627b9560d816ed2fdd9632edf.r19.c…Episcopal Relief & Development Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response Welcome!

Features in the works

• Multiple pins in one location • Emergency mode • Gray pins for assets outside diocesan

boundaries • Non-US Episcopal dioceses • Continue to increase speed

Page 14: Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response1080b7859aada3d0beaf-0bfa255627b9560d816ed2fdd9632edf.r19.c…Episcopal Relief & Development Episcopal Asset Map and disaster response Welcome!

Network maps

• Pins can be tagged as part of national networks – Examples: Episcopal Health Ministries, Jubilee

Ministries • Pins still “belong” to diocese where they are

located – Changes still need to be approved by diocesan map

administrators

Ethan Lowery is great. He’s based in San Francisco, he’s an extrovert and he’s a church nerd. His entire job is to talk to people who are using the asset map, or who want to, and help them! He’s also an ENFP, an enneagram 2w3, a Slytherin and a Pisces.

Thank you for coming! Let’s close with a word of prayer: God, thank you for this time today and of learning and getting to know one another. Help us to retain some of what we have learned but even more than that help us to rely on these relationships we have built and go forth into the world to praise you in thought, word and deed. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Please head back to the sanctuary for a 15 minute closing worship.
