Monday, Dec. 18 6 pm Celebration of life for Elwin Coe

Dear Friends, There is something wonderful about the Advent season that invites us not only to deeper reflection, sometimes repentance, but also to a new embrace or celebration of life. I have often found it no small wonder, while sitting with anxious loved ones awaiting a surgery, or even facing painful end of life decisions, that the hospital will play some sort of bell or chime indicating that a new baby has been born. You have probably experienced it too. It is a humbling and wonderful reality that where darkness may exist, even death, the light of life and love will overcome it. Advent invites us anew into death and rebirth, the very essence of who we are a baptized children of God. Yes, we resist the dying part in a myriad of ways but it is an essential part of our growth, our

letting go, and our trusting journey toward Emmanuel once again. I hope that you will carve out some time to join us for Elwin Coe’s Memorial Service, truly a celebration of life to be held in the parish hall on Monday, December 18 at 6pm. Elwin’s family is planning a special time for us to gather and grieve the reality of death while celebrating the hope of resurrection, the many blessings of this life which extend into eternity. You will find additional details in the Midweek. I know this will different from the way we “usually” do memorials. But, there is something appropriate to the nature of Advent that invites us to step out of our comfort zone, to step into the grieving space with another, and to follow their lead in honoring and remembering their loved one. It is one of the greater joys I know as a pastor: learning new ways to lead and to follow. I pray you all have a holy and peaceful Advent season. Joy
