This weekend, a number of Los Angeles congregations of vari-ous faiths are bringing special emphasis to efforts to house the homeless, gathering under the theme “Houses of Worship Shel-

tering Local Angelenos,” or HOWSLA. The weekend observance was suggested by the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders, and a cen-tral forum will be hosted by St. James’ Episcopal Church in Wilshire Center (more information below). All are invited. Meanwhile, dioc-esan efforts also move forward to address homelessness across the six counties of the diocese. Please watch for additional forthcoming reports. May God guide us in these efforts of serving our homeless sisters and brothers with dignity and housing. ?

to build permanent supportive housing — will be in focus at an interfaith panel program set for this Sunday, Oct. 16, 4:30 p.m. at St. James’ in-the-City Episcopal Church, 3903 Wilshire Blvd.

A music video premiere of the original composition “You Belong” by the duo Bran-den & James is planned, together with a screening of a segment of the film “Homeless to Homeowner.”

St. James’ bishop-in-charge, the Rt. Rev. Catherine Roskam, will welcome the gath-ering, planned under the theme “Coming Home L.A.” All are invited to attend.

Panelists will include:u Alisa Orduna, homelessness policy direc-

tor in the office of Mayor Eric Garcetti;u Celina Alvarez, executive director of

Housing Works;u Marion Sanders, senior manager of com-

munity services and evaluation (HOP-ICS);

u Joe Cirrito, senior lead officer, LAPD Olympic Division;

u Thomas Newman, communication di-rector, L.A. Family Housing;

u Robert Williams, president, Interreli-gious Council of Southern California, moderator.

Attendees are also invited to bring new, un-used household items to assist in preparation of baskets for formerly homeless persons en-tering new housing.

The forum event will occur during a week-end in which many L.A. congregations are emphasizing responses to homelessness at the invitation of the Los Angeles Council of Reli-gious Leaders.
