EPOTUF®
Epoxy Resins and Curing Agents
2
Coatings Business
Formulating coatings for marine, aerospace, industrial maintenance and flooring applications is a tough job made easier by using raw materials that provide tough performance. Reichhold’s EPOTUF® products provide the epoxy coatings formulator with a broad selection of epoxy raw materials.
Introduction to Epoxy Resins and Curing Agents
Epoxies are thermosetting resins which contain an oxirane or epoxide ring. Epoxy resins form infusible, insoluble solids when cross-linked with amine or other types of curing agents.
Cured epoxy systems provide a number of attractive performance properties:
• Excellent adhesion
• Low shrinkage
• Excellent mechanical properties
• Excellent solvent and chemical resistance
• Good electrical properties
Because they offer such a broad range of performance properties, epoxy systems are used in a variety of applications. The major markets which consume epoxy resins and curing agents include:
• Protective coatings
• Construction / civil engineering
• Adhesives
• Composites
• Electronics / encapsulation
Curing agent selection and cure conditions are key factors which determine the final properties of epoxy systems. Typically curing agents cross-link epoxy resins in one of two ways: by reacting with the epoxide group to become part of the final polymer network or by acting as a catalyst to promote homopolymerization of the resin.
Reichhold currently offers the following types of epoxy curing agents:
• Aliphatic amines
• Amidoamines
• Cycloaliphatic amines
• Polyamides
• Waterborne polyamine adducts
• Non-isocyanate cure systems (NISO)

Calculating Epoxy Resin and Curing Agent Mix Ratio
To achieve the desired performance results from an epoxy / amine curing agent system,it is important to use the resin and curing agent in stoichiometric amounts. The important factors to
remember are that calculations are based only on the ratio of the reactive components.
To calculate the proper use ratio, the following information is needed:• AHEW = Amine Hydrogen Equivalent Weight• EEW = Epoxide Equivalent Weight
The EEW and AHEW for individual EPOTUF® products are available on the product data sheet which can befound at www.Reichhold.com.
1) Calculating a simple resin and curing agent stoichiometric mix ratio. To calculate the amount of curingagent required (phr = parts by weight of curing agent per 100 parts of epoxy resin), use the following formula:
Example:
EPOTUF® 37-127, EEW is 197EPOTUF® 37-601, AHEW is 85
Therefore 43 parts of EPOTUF® 37-601 are needed for each 100 parts ofEPOTUF® 37-127 resin or it would take 43 lbs of 37-601 to cure 100 lbs of 37-127.
2) Calculating the AHEW of a blend of curing agents.
AHEW (curing agent)EEW (epoxy resin)
x 100
8
85197
x 100phr =
Total weight (parts) of curative mixture
Wt parts of curing agent AAHEW =
Wt parts of curing agent B AHEW of curing agent A AHEW of curing agent B
+
phr =
= 43
Example:
EPOTUF® 37-127 is being used with a curing agent blend of EPOTUF® 37-601 and EPOTUF® 37-635. The curing agent blend is made up of 80 parts 37-601 and 20 parts 37-635.
EPOTUF® 37-127, EEW is 197EPOTUF® 37-601, AHEW is 85EPOTUF® 37-635, AHEW is 74
Therefore, 42 parts of the curing agent blend will be required to cure 100 parts ofEPOTUF® 37-127 or 42 lbs are needed to cure 100 lbs 37-127.
3) Calculating the EEW of a blend of epoxy resins.
Example:
EPOTUF® 37-140 is being blended with reactive diluent EPOTUF® 37-051 to reduce itsviscosity. The epoxy resin blend will consist of 90 parts EPOTUF® 37-140 and 10 parts of EPOTUF® 37-058. This blend will be reacted with EPOTUF® 37-703.
EPOTUF® 37-140, EEW is 185EPOTUF® 37-051, EEW is 675EPOTUF® 37-703, AHEW is 93
Therefore, 47 parts of EPOTUF® 37-703 will be required to cure 100 parts of the epoxy resinblend of EPOTUF® 37-140 and EPOTUF® 37-051 or 47 lbs are needed to cure 100 lbs of theblend of epoxy resins.
