CHINTANAshok Gajria

Certain divisions among the community, families

of resident or non-resident status have made

their views very obvious as far as marital

relationship is concerned. The chance of a

marriage between a boy from India and a girl

from Dubai, Bahrain or the Gulf countries is

almost nil if not over. Reasons behind this

situation is not a consequence. The situation is

as clear as writing. It is futile to explore the

causes of this malady, if indeed there is one then

it is only due to the rapid changes concerning

the overall lavish and comfortable lifestyle that a

person gets used to. It’s almost impossible to

alter this lifestyle for the sake of community ties

or any such similar social or economic reason.

As I understand, now a girl from Dubai prefers a

not very well off boy from Dubai in comparison

to a well established and stable boy from India.

In fact, very few like to migrate to US or UK, such

is the lure of the Gulf.

The purpose of writing this is neither to find a

fault with the situation nor to suggest any solution

as there is no resolution. It is a matter of

preparing for a change in the situation and this

is hardly in control of an individual or a

community.

If there is any hope while I write this article then

it is a hope against a hope that the youngsters

whom this issue is addressed to, also share my

views, in case they have the time to read this!

As I still dream of Thatta and Karachi as my early

childhood was spent there and I begin to see

and hear although I cannot recollect what I saw

or heard.

But the scenes keep cropping into my memory,

those voices and scenes in the background. I

am sure the situation is the same for those who

are born and brought up in the countries they

presently live in. While I accept this reality,

TILAKA

The tilaka is a mark created by the application of

powder or paste on the forehead. .Tilak-chandlo

has been a Hindu tradition, especially in the

Vaishnav Sampraday, for thousands of years as a

symbol of victory, auspiciousness, and belonging

to a particular faith. Even Hindus use the Tilaka

ceremony, as a mark of honor and welcome to

guests. Tilak, a mark of Hindu Sanatan Dharma,

comes from the Sanskrit word ‘til’ which means

sesame seed. The sesame seed has great

importance in yagnas and charity. A tilak is

imprinted on a person’s forehead because it is the

location through which one can channel Divinity,

thus enhancing the spiritual character of an

individual. Male devotees apply a tilak and chandlo

on their foreheads during puja. The tilak is made

of chandan, or yellow sandalwood paste, and the

chandlo is made of kumkum, or red saffron powder.

Female devotees only apply a chandlo, commonly

known as bindi, on their foreheads. The chandlo

is representative of the devotee. In this way, the

meaning of the tilak-chandlo is two-fold. First, it

represents a devotee remaining at the service of

God’s feet. Secondly, it represents the dual

devotion to God and the gunatit guru.

somewhere deep within me there is a feeling that

hurts and will keep hurting. My children too are

away, far away from me and so are all the

youngsters of this community.

The thought hurts and mind you, I am not alone.

When I meet senior people from our community,I

could feel the aura of loneliness, sadness and not

much hope for anything new. I wish I could express

these thoughts more graphically and convey my

feelings more clearly to my kith and kin and my

THATHAI BHATIA CLAN.

THE JOURNEY OF A

THOUSAND MILES

BEGINS WITH

ONE STEPLata Ashar

In last Samvad, our Editorial Team had adiscussion about Role Models. To get familiarwith prestigious Roll Models from Thathai Bhatiahistory, I just pop in Thathai Bhatia Shewa Fund.3rd Vasti- Patrak , which was released in 1994,almost before 2o years. In this Vasti patrak givena brief history with the title ‘At Thathai beforepartition’ started from year 1919 & ‘At Bombay afterPartition’ started from the year 1953.

If we count from 1916 to 2016,in this 100 yearsperiod, five generations data can be collected, butif we talk about before Nagar Thatha story, It isdifficult to find someone who can narrate the storyto us, Hence we have to rely on the bygone eraHistorian & the Monuments which still exist.

Again come to the Tbsf vastipatrak details, thedetails here complied by Late Shree Gopal J.Gandhi.

According to well known poet Jessa Bhatt, Bhatiassettled in Thatha(sindh)about 650 years back, andfurther it depict the story of Thathai Bhatia ShewaFund. When It set up ? where ? & the reasons torequire an institute with name ‘THATHAI BHATIASHEWA FUND’.

“The Idea of setting up a permanent relief institutesprang up after Plague Relief fund was mootedby some dedicated Bhatias on 31/12/1918.KiklaBrothers, Shree Maghanmal & Gordhandas, Sonsof Assanmal appealed to Bhatia community tohelp Bhatia Brothers & Sisters who were affectedby this dreadful epidemic. The donation poured infrom all Bhatias living in Thatha, Hydrabad,Bombay Karachi, Nathdwara, Bahrain and otherplaces. Lohanas also contributed their mite to thisfund.

With the success of this relief fund , Kikla Brothers, together with other Bhatias, decided to start apermanent institution which can render service toBhatia community at the time of their difficulty &need.

On 7/10/1918 under the Presidentship of ShreeDamodardas Hemandas at Bombay, this effort didnot achieve success, but the well-wishers ofThathai Bhatia Community did not put off the plan

& held second meeting on 16/2/1919 in Thatha, with the support of a patron shree Sardar MukhiJeramdas Vensimal.

And this time the plan approved with immediateeffect to establish Thathai Bhatia Shewa Fund. Thisthe story how Shewafund before 97 years backcame into existence just with 56 members whodecided to work as volunteers to give their bestservices and wow to work for the interest of theFund and endeavour to enhance it.

After one month, Managing committee of Tenmembers was formed. Shri DhamanmalDevkishandas Chachra was elected first President& shreeGordhandas Asanmal Kikla was the firstsecretary of the shewafund.

No subscription fees for the members, but shewafund relied on donations from its members, whowork together in one spirit in order to enhance &improve the health, wealth, education and helpcommunity members in time of difficulty, sickness& need.

Besides helping community members, shewafundstarted its first Dispensary & Maternity home in 26th

dec. 1921 in a rented house. In 1924 shewafundinvites Bhatia community members to become lifemembers of this institution,Later ,started a PathikAshram for the guests from outside NagarThatha..In 1932 shewafund has its own building .Shree Jawaharlal Nehru visited Hospital at thathain 1935. A maternity home at Bhatia Shewafundwas appreciated by Red -cross society dignatoryMrs. Cecillia Burgess..

The woman folk of Bhatia community also active &were giving their volunteer service to help thecommunity, Kunvanbai, who donated building,Tarabai who collected fund, ,wandering from doorto door for maternity home, Tillanbai donetted cashfor mute animals fountain. In 1942 Mohiniben electedas first Lady president in Bhatia shewafundcommunity.

In 1947 because of the Partition the community hadto leave behind , the most renowned Shewafundbuilding & its welfare activities

Shri Parmanand Asarpota & Shri HemandasPitamberdas credited to collect cash after savingsome securities & selling miscellaneous articlesfrom shewafund in Thatha

This the story in brief, started from year 1919, ourprestigious Roll Models from our Thathai BhatiaCommunity when our fore fathers were settled inNagar Thatha .

A dental camp was conducted by Dr. Khusboo

Sehgal a Pediatric & Preventive Dentist and Dr.

Amit Chablani a Speciality Dentist. At Thatai

Bhatia Shewa Fund for Kaalindi Kids on 18th

November 2016 and approximately 85 children

were examined.

A Pediatric Dentist is a specialist only for

children’s teeth. The approach taken by a

pediatric dentist is very different than that by a

general dentist which helps in making the child’s

dental experience a pleasant and more

comfortable one to help reduce the fears

associated with the dental treatment. following are

the observations made at the camp:

1. Out of playgroup and nursery section 80-

85% children were having a healthy mouth.

Although a certain number of children did show

initial signs of decay.

2. In the higher sections i.e. Junior and

Senior kg, it was observed that the cavity rate was

alarmingly higher. This is usually associated with

the greater exposure in terms of food habits (easy

availability of junk food being one) and dental

hygiene measures (e.g. brushing

techniques) taken for this age group.

3. Approximately 45% of the children had 5

or more cavities.

4. 20% of these children had more than 10

cavities which were extremely deep and requiring

urgent attention.

5. Only 5% of the children overall had some

dental treatment done in the past out of which a

few children did require retreatment for some

teeth.

6. It was also observed that some of the

children with a high decay rate were apprehensive

to get a check-up done. Thus it is important for the

parents to make sure that they do not neglect

treatment for this children.

Advise to the parents based on the above

observations

l Dental treatment of milk teeth is

ABSOLUTELY essential as they are the foundation

for a future healthy mouth.

l Tooth decay can cause significant pain,

loss of school days and may lead to infections and

so prevention is better.

l Parents are advised to maintain a regular

dental check-up for their children every 3 - 6 months

in order to prevent development of any decay in the

teeth

l Also fluoride treatment is highly

recommended every 6 months to avoid cavities.

l Diet plays an important role and is directly

proportional to the cavity rate. The easy availability

of junk food plays a big role in development of

cavities. Hence diet counseling becomes an

important requisite to a child’s dental hygiene

l Children who have been diagnosed with

even one or more cavities are advised to get a

detailed dental examination and treatment at

pediatric dental centre situated in Bandra West.
