From Friday…
• You have 15 minutes to complete your assignment from Friday (worksheet with the text)
• Be sure to turn into the trays under the HW board
• If you have finished, create a poster about one of the VOCABULARY words from our readings on Friday• Include the word and definition
• Illustration of the word or a mnemonic device to help remember the term
Ideas from the state governments
•Branches of Government: so no one branch could have more power
•Bill of Rights: a set of rights ALL citizens are entitled to
•Separation of Power: state’s have some power and the national government does too
•Bicameral Congress: two houses of representative
The Articles of Confederation
• National Government• Weak central government- people were afraid a strong NATIONAL gov’t could
become an oppressive gov’t• Power to wage war, make peace, sign treaties, and issue money
• State Governments• Set taxes• Enforce national laws• Control the western lands (from French and Indian War)
• DEBT• The Articles did nothing to solve the problem of the debt from the war
Why did we even need a government?
• James Madison said “If all men were angels, no government would be necessary…”
• Why do we NEED a government? • To create order
• To create laws
• To enforce the laws
• Provide for the people
• Protect the people
The Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan
The Virginia Plan The New Jersey Plan
3 Branches of Government Each state would send 1 representative
Bicameral Legislative Branch (two houses) PROBLEM: What if that one person’s views didn’t match up with the people of his state?
# of representatives based on population
PROBLEM: States with smaller populations would have LESS representatives
The Constitutional Convention took both ideas. We have a BICAMERAL legislature:
- House of Representatives: reps based on population- Senate: each state has 2 reps
Federalists vs. AntifederalistsFederalists Antifederalists
Strong Central Government (one national government)
Stronger power to state governments
President has the most power
Congress will have the most power
3 Branches Bill of Rights
In the end, Federalists win, but a BILL OF RIGHTS IS INCLUDED in our Constitution.
What if….
• The Federalists won and the Constitution was RATIFIED (approved).
• BUT what if the Antifederalists had one and states had ALL the power.
• Using your knowledge of current events in the US and your studies with ELA (The Watson’s Go to Birmingham), how do you think some states would have ruled in national decisions?• Think About: Civil Rights, Gay Rights, Immigration, Gun control, Government
systems like welfare and Medicaid.
• What states might have voted AGAINST allowing equality for blacks?
• How would gay marriage be impacted?
Brainstorming
•As a group come up with a list of 5 ideas that the US Government needed to be based on• Example: The US Constitution needed to protect
the idea that ALL citizens have the right to LIFE
The 7 Principles of the Constitution
• 1- Popular Sovereignty
• 2- Republicanism
• 3- Federalism
• 4- Separation of Powers
• 5- Checks and Balances
• 6- Limited Government
• 7- Individual Rights
Principle Posters
• Each group will be assigned a Principle
• Define the group member jobs:• Reader- will read the information in the text aloud to group
• As reader reads, other group members need to read along to get important information
• Recorder (x2 if group of 5)- will record important information on to the poster• Must explain the principle in LESS THAN 15 words
• Illustrator- will create a visual for the principle (chart, picture, example)• Presenter- will present the poster to the class and teach us about the
principle
• 15 MINUTES to read, write, and create!
As we present…
• Write down each principle
• Write down the definition
• Create a QUICK DRAW of the principle
