My name is Steve Connelly, and my role is Vice President of Midwest Agriculture. I oversee operations in our agriculture stores in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. I’ve been with RDO Equipment Co. for nearly 10 years and served in General Manager roles during my time with the company.

Remote Display Access (RDA)

GS3 2630 Cellular Data Server Computer with internet

John Deere’s Remote Display Access is becoming popular to producers. RDA will allow our producers to view their GreenStar display live online from anywhere in the world. This tool will be useful for inexperienced operators or when operators are stumped in the field.

Real Time Kinematic (RTK)RTK has been a common term in precision agriculture for quite a few years and often it is a term that is not easily understood even though it’s so popular.

RTK uses the same GPS signal along with John Deere’s Star-Fire signal and incorporates a base station to create a fixed location for satellite corrections. This base station corrects any errors and forwards the corrected signal to the tractor to give it more precise guidance.

Benefits of Real Time Kinematics:

• Repeatability: RTK nearly eliminates all satellite drift which is common among satellite-only systems.• Accuracy: Sub-inch accuracy with no time limits to go down and back.• Quicker Startups: Receivers with RTK take less time to pick up good satellite signals for faster starts down the field.

Limitations of RTK:

• Clear view of the sky is required for both tractor and base station.• Line of sight between tractor and base.• Tractor must be less than 12 miles from base for sub-inch accuracy.

Bluebird Gardens CSA Thrives with Fergus Falls Partnership

For nearly 35 years, Mark taught elementary school and says it was a rewarding job. Today’s consumer wants to know where food comes from before it hits the table and participating in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), is an easy method to do so. In a traditional CSA model, a farmer sells a number of shares to the public, with each share providing the participant a box of vegetables and seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season. According to localharvest.org, while the idea is simple, the impact to consumers has been profound. Because the government doesn’t track CSAs, there’s no official count of how many exist in the USA but localharvest.org estimates that tens of thousands of families have already joined CSAs in their communities across the country.

Bluebird Gardens, a CSA in Fergus Falls, MN, is operated by Mark and Diane Boen. The mission of Bluebird Gardens is to connect people to the farm where their food is grown and to take good care of the land so they can provide the highest quality, nutrient-rich vegetables.

After starting to operate as a CSA in 2010, Bluebird Gardens took a hard look at the land stewardship portion of their mission. They currently accomplish this mission through biological farming. “It all starts with the soil,” comments Mark Boen. “We add in the missing elements and feed the life in the soil that helps build fertility. The result is great tasting, nutrient-rich vegetables.”

Bluebird Gardens has an important ally in their farming operations. RDO Equipment Co. in Fergus Falls has become an important part of the operation by providing various pieces of equipment to the farm. Mark has rave reviews of his John Deere equipment. “Our 7330 is by far the coolest tractor I’ve ever seen.” He adds, “We also have a 5105M – it’s the smoothest ride with tons of power. Even though it seems small, it’s a horse at pulling things in the field. It gives us delicate maneuverability and a lot of power.” In 2000, Mark purchased a 5205 and says it’s a piece he’ll never part with. “That tractor can do anything on our farm – move irrigation wagons, plant and cultivate potatoes. That tractor is the most versatile piece on our farm.”

Mark’s passion for the land, his farming operation and his green equipment is matched by his high satisfaction with the partnership he has with his dealer, RDO Equipment Co. “Our Account Manager, Ryan Mohrman, is so diligent and dedicated and willing to serve.
