Veal Cutlet - Wiener Schnitzel

It´s a traditional Austrian dish and is a

popular part of Viennese and Aus-

trian cuisine. Wiener Schnitzel in gen-

erally means a cutlet of superior veal

without bones. It’s fried in bread-

crumbs. In Austria the dish is tradition-

ally served with a lemon slice, lin-

gonberry jam and either potato salad

or potatoes with parsley and butter.

The “Home of the Schnitzel” in Vienna is Figlmüllers Restaurant,

Lugeck 4, 1010 Vienna, but there are a lot more possibilities to find

a good Schnitzel in Vienna.

Knuckle of Pork – Stelze

The Stelze is made of pork roasted until

the skin is crisp, and served with mus-

tard, horseradish, and pickled chili

peppers. The Bavarian version is often

served with potato dumplings and red

cabbage, or with sauerkraut and po-

tatoes. The best Stelze in Town is

served at the Schweizerhaus, Prater

Sacher Cake – Sacher Torte

The Sacher Torte is a specific type

of chocolate cake, invented by

Franz Sacher in 1832. It is one of the

most famous Viennese culinary

specialities and because of the Sa-

cher Torte Austria is known world-

wide. The cake consists of a dense

chocolate cake base with a thin

layer of apricot jam on top, coated

in dark chocolate icing. It is tradi-

tionally served with unsweetened whipped cream.

Kaiserschmarrn

Kaiserschmarrn is a shredded pan-

cake, which has its name from the

Austrian emperor Kaiser Franz Joseph.

Kaiserschmarren is a light, caramel-

ized pancake made from a sweet

batter using flour, eggs, sugar, salt,

and milk, baked in butter. Kaisersch-

marren can be prepared in different

ways. The pancake is split with two

forks into pieces while frying and usu-

ally sprinkled with powdered sugar,

then served hot with apple or plum sauce or various fruit compotes,

including plum, lingonberry, strawberry, or apple.

The Wiener Riesen-

rad

The Riesenrad is 64, 75-

meter tall Ferris wheel and it is located at the

entrance of the Prater amusement park in Vi-

enna. It is one of Vienna’s most popular tourist

attractions and it was constructed in 1897.

St. Stephens Cathedral The St. Stephens Cathedral is commonly known

as Stephansdom and it is one of Vienna’s most

popular landmarks, because it is the heart of Vi-

enna. Because of its multi-coloured tile roof, it

became one of the city’s most recognizable

symbols.

St. Stephens Cathedral’s massive south tower is

the highest point and a dominant feature of the

Vienna Skyline.

Schönbrunn Palace The Schönbrunn Palace is in the 13th district

Hietzing. In 1619 the emperor Matthias dis-

covered an artesian well on his hunt. Be-

cause he was impressed by it, he said:

“Welch’ schön Brunn” and so this venue is

now called “Schönbrunn”. It is the biggest

palace and one of the most important and

most-visited cultural assets of Austria. The

palace and the park have been a part of the UNESCO-world cultu-

ral heritage since 1996. A main attraction in the castle park is the

oldest still existing zoo of the world, the zoo Schönbrunn.

Uno

The United Nations Office at Vienna is lo-

cated in the 22th district of Vienna and

was established on 1 January 1980 as the

third United Nations Headquarters after

New York and Geneva (and before Nai-

robi). It performs representation and

connection functions with permanent

missions to the United Nations (Vienna).

Kahlenberg

The Kahlenberg is a hill with a height of

484 m. It lies in the Vienna Woods and is

one of the most popular destinations for

day-trips from Vienna, offering a view

over the entire city.

Karlskirche

The Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church) is a

baroque church placed in the 4th district

of Vienna. Widely considered the most

outstanding baroque church in Vienna, as

well as one of the city's greatest buildings,

Karlskirche is dedicated to Saint Charles

Borromeo, one of the great reformers of

the sixteenth century.

Naschmarkt

The Naschmarkt is Vienna's most popular market. It is located in the

6th district and it is about it is about 1.5 kilometres long. At this market

you can buy one can buy fresh fruit and vegetables from around

the world, 6 exotic herbs, cheese meat, seafood, baked goods

such as bread.

Technisches Museum

The Technisches Museum (Vienna Technical

Museum) is located in the 14th district. The

permanent exhibition categories include:

Nature and Knowledge: astronomy, princi-

pals, physics; Heavy industry: mining, iron,

steel; Energy; Mass production - luxury

goods; Everyday life - directions for use;

Communications and information media;

Musical instruments; Transport; Basic Re-

search

Karl Marx - Hof

The Karl Marx-Hof is one of the best-

known municipality buildings in Vi-

enna. It is placed in the 19th district.

The heavy artillery damage to Karl

Marx-Hof was repaired in the 1950s. It

has been used as a filming location

for some movies, most notably “The

Night Porter”.

Uni-Wien

The University of Vienna is

a public university located in

the 1st district. It was founded

by Duke Rudolph IV in 1365

and is the oldest university in

the German-speaking world.

With its long and rich history,

the University of Vienna has developed into one of the biggest uni-

versities in Europe. The University of Vienna consists of 92000 students

and employs 9500 staff.

WU

WU" (Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien or Vienna University of Economics

and Business) is the largest University focusing on business and eco-

nomics in Europe and, in terms of student body, one of the largest

universities in Austria. It has been ranked as one of the best busi-

ness schools in Europe. The WU is placed in the 2nd district.

Zentralfriedhof

The Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery) is one of the largest ceme-

teries in the world, largest by number of interred in Europe and most

famous cemetery among Vienna's nearly 50 cemeteries. It is lo-

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born on 30 July

1947 in Styria. He is also called “Arni”. Arnold

took part by Olympic weight lifting apart

from his bodybuilding career. He received

the title Mr. Olympia seven times and the title

Mr. Universe four times. In 1970 Arnold

Schwarzenegger was in the movie “Hercules

in New York”, but someone had to synchro-

nize his voice, due to his strong styrian ac-

cent. His biggest role as an actor was Termi-

nator, where Arni got the legend quotation:

“I’ll be back!” Schwarzenegger served two terms as the 38th

Governor of California from 2003 until 2011.

Conchita Wurst

Conchita Wurst is a singer and a drag

stage persona. Her real name is

Thomas "Tom" Neuwirth and she was

born on 6 November 1988 in upper

Austria. Conchita won the Eurovision

Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen,

Denmark, with the song "Rise Like a

Phoenix". In 2007 she appeared as Thomas Neuwirth in the Austrian

casting show "Starmania".

David Alaba

David Alaba was born on 24 June 1992

in Vienna and he is an Austrian footbal-

ler. Nowadays he plays for the German

club Bayern Munich and the Austria na-

tional football team. He holds Austria's

record as the youngest athlete to play

for the national team, debuting for

them in 2009 as a 17-year-old. He won

the honouring “Austrian athlete of the

year” in 2013 and 2014. Alaba received

the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup with the

German club Bayern Munich in 2013.

Falco

Falco’s real name is Johann Hans Hölzel

and he was born on 19 February 1957 in Vi-

enna. Falco died because of a car acci-

dent with alcohol and cocaine in his blood.

He was an Austrian musician and many

would call him “the first white rapper”. The

song “Rock Me Amadeus“ reached the No.

1 on the US Billboard charts as the first Ger-

man-speaking song. Falco is still the best sel-

ling Austrian singer of all time.

Gregor Schlierenzauer

Gregor Schlierenzauer was born on 7

of January 1990 in Tyrol. He is an Aus-

trian ski jumper and his fans call him

“Schlieri”. He began his senior career in

2005–06 with one victory and three ad-

ditional podiums in the Ski Jumping

Grand Prix, and made his World Cup

debut in 2005–06. In 2008-09, he won

the World Cup and he set a series of records. His personal best is

243.5 meters, jumped during the 2010–11 season, in Vikersund, Nor-

way. He won two bronze medals and a gold medal in the team

competition with Wolfgang Loitzl, Andreas Kofler and Thomas Mor-

genstern at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an influential

composer of the Classical era and he was born

on 27 January 1756 in Salzburg. From the age

of five, he played keyboard and violin before

European royalty. In 1781, he moved to Vienna

and composed many of his best-know sym-

phonies, concertos, operas and portions of the

Requiem. He composed over 600 works and he

is among the most popular of classical com-

posers, and his influence on subsequent West-

ern art music is profound.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Friedensreich Hundertwasser was born in Vienna on

the 15th of December 1928 and he became one of

the best-known Austrian artists by the end of the 20th

century. The Second World War was a very difficult

time for Hundertwasser and his mother Elsa, who was

Jewish and to remain inconspicuous, Hundertwasser

joined the Hitler Youth. After the war, he spent three

months at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Hun-

dertwasser also worked in the field of applied art,

creating flags, stamps, coins, and posters. His

most famous flag is the Koru Flag, as well as sev-

eral postage stamps for the Austrian Post Office.

The Hundertwasserhaus apartment block in Vi-

enna has uneven floors, a roof covered with

earth and grass, and large trees growing from in-

side the rooms, with limbs extending from win-

dows.

Christoph Waltz

Christoph Waltz was born on the 4th October

1956 in Vienna and he is a German-Austrian ac-

tor. In 2009, Waltz portrayed the SS-Standart-

enführer Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds and

three years later, he played a dentist-turned-

bounty-hunter called King Schultz in the Ameri-

can epic black comedy western film written and

directed by Quentin Tarantino, Django Un-

chained. He won two oscars, an Academy

Award, a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe

Award for Best Supporting Actor. Christoph Waltz is the father of four

children and currently he is living in Los Angeles and Berlin.
