The Event

1. BRISWA Project – 1st International Workshop

Last 22th May, at the “Aula Magna” of the Faculty of Economics at Tor Vergata University in Rome,

was held the 1st International Workshop of the project "Briswa - The Ball Rolls in the Same Way for

All". Many relevant speakers have attended this event like:

• Dr. Carlo Tavecchio, president of FIGC (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio);

• Dr. Daniele Frongia, delegated for Sport and Youth Policies from the Municipality of Rome;

• Bruno Peres, AS Roma’s Brazilian footballer;

• Patrizia Panico, first woman to train a national under-16 male football team;

• Mr Gigi Di Biagio, coach of the Italian national under-21 team;

• Prof. Sergio Roticiani, President of the Regional Section of A.I.A.C (Associazione Italiana

Allenatori di Calcio) (also a BRISWA project Expert),

• Prof. Stefano D’Ottavio, president of the Motor Science Faculty at the University of Rome

“Tor Vergata” and Physical Coach Coordinator of the Italian Women Football National Team;

• Mr. Tibor Vámos, President of Ethnics and Fair Play M.L.S.Z. committee;

• Mr. Szilveszter Kovács, the Head of M.L.S.Z. Grassroots Programme.

The purpose of the BRISWA project, which aggregates 7 partners from Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania,

Greece and Serbia, as well as Italy, is to tackle the issue of racism in the world of football and sport.

The BRISWA project mainly aims at re-examining racism in football, as well as also other

discriminations in sports in general, by analyzing its roots and nature and by promoting, through a

sound scientific work on social analysis, a more thorough and active approach against it, thus

evidencing what could be the best practical policies to mitigate this social cancer.

The workshop has been introduced by the project coordinator Dr. Eng. Stefano Armenia which

make a short description of the project and present the guest speakers of the workshop.

He anticipates that this is only the first international workshop which will be held in each partner

country. Tackling the issue of racism in the world of football and sport "trying to spread a message

of equality between races, genres and religions among footballers; especially among the youngest",

is one of the first objective of project as he explains: "The European Commission believes in this

initiative as a way to identify policies and good practices to fight this issue, which is in all respects a

social cancer,"; The slogan of the project is “Set Racism Off Side”.

After the Institutional greetings from the Prof. Sergio Bernardini, Sport Delegated of Tor Vergata

University, which host the event, and after his thanksgiving to the project consortium to choose Tor

Vergata University as location, the opening Workshop speech was given by FIGC president, Dr. Carlo

Tavecchio.

“There are two principal reason for which the FIGC support this project: the first is related to the

theme, racism in the football world; the second is the internationally of the initiative” and the

scientific and academic approach contained inside it represent an added value; “The communication

of sports values and sensitizing the players to the issue of inclusion is not only a project basis but also

a pillar of Federcalcio.” After the explanations of some actions and projects directly implemented by

the FIGC (a list of more 190 project), Dr. Tavecchio wanted to thank the Academy F.C. to invite him

to the workshop: “A not professional football academy that are promoter of this important social issue

should be underlined” .

After the President of FIGC another representative of the institutions, the delegated for Sport and

Youth Policies from the Municipality of Rome, Dr. Daniele Frongia, intervenes remembering the last

episodes about racism in Football (during the last Pescara vs Cagliari, Sulley Muntari has been

insulted by fans) saying “Each of us has to fight this phenomenon by trying to change culturally”.

The first woman to train a national youth football team Miss Patrizia Panico, highlights how the

racism is not only related to the color of the skin but, in a more general way, the phenomena of racism

could be also considered as racism of gender. She said “we are trying to level the playing field,

creating more opportunities for women; What worries the women football players is the prospect of

the future. Women still play in amateur leagues; Our goal is to be able to scrap a language that is still

a bit too male chauvinist”. Professor Stefano D’Ottavio, expert of BRISWA project and Physical

Coach Coordinator of Women Football National Teams underline how “Football borns from the street

without barriers and should be used as vehicle to spread this important message”.

"Many guys suffer because of racism in the football world - commented Bruno Peres - I think it's

important to raise awareness about racism. It's a bad thing. It is not the color that make you more or

less good. We are all the same, we do not have to make a difference. We are all against racism;

whoever is next to you is the same as you, regardless of skin color. This is not only in football but in

life. Racist people don’t know the hurt they do, we must help them to improve themself. ".

“Beyond all things we can do, be here and talk about racism and see racism episodes is

unacceptable and incredible” saying the coach of Italy U21 Football Team Mr. Luigi Di Biagio.

In the second part of the workshop, reserved to the Project expert, the sports psychologist and

relational therapist Prof. Aldo Grauso said that “usually, the people involved in racist episodes simply

do so because of a basic prejudice, without a real and objective knowledge of the reality. This is very

often caused by the fear of diversity, through denial and escape from anything that you do not know.

The game has a fundamental role in kids’ life, especially the social one, where they learn to stay

together. This is definitely a good therapeutic gym to help everyone live up to their differences."

The President of Ethnics and Fair Play committee, Mr. Tibor Vamos, presents some social project

applied in Hungary to fight against racism and underlines how much is important sensibilize children

during their youth in order to extirpate this phenomenon.

2. BRISWA CONSORTIUM MEETING

In the morning, before the International workshop, a consortium meeting was held among all project

partners. Basically, all partners show trimestral activity report by a power point presentation on which

was requested to address the following topics:

• Participation to events

• Signed Manifestations of Interest, so far

• Relations with potential experts and testimonials

• Social dissemination

• Videos, posts, etc.

• Other relevant outcomes

The Project Coordinator, Dr. Eng. Armenia, shows and explains guidelines for an effective social

dissemination and communication through social network activities and guidelines for shooting

project videos.

A new scheduling of national Project Workshops has been defined which will convey into the new

project plan to be delivered with the amendment request that has been scheduled for mid-June 2017.

Dr. Armenia reminds also to all partners to send to him all documentation related to the trimestral

financial report.

Press review The 1st BRISWA International Workshop (Rome, 22-05-2017) has received extensive coverage by

many national media: TV, radios, newspapers and websites. All the materials (press review, photo

and video) was shared in the official BRISWA web site (www.briswa.eu) as well as on related social

channels (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn). The event has also been broadcasted

via live streaming on the BRISWA official Facebook page (facebook.com/briswaofficial) and then

the related video has also been published on the project’s official YouTube channel.
