DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS:
IhavealwaysbeenproudtosayIamanalumnusoftheIUMaurerSchoolofLaw.Mylegaleducationwellpreparedmeforaninterestingandrewardingcareer,andImademanyfriendshipsinlawschoolthatenduretothisday.
Uponpreparingforthisissueofergo,Ihavefoundmysenseofprideinourschoolisgreaterthanever.AlthoughIknewthatIndianaLawhasalwaysbeenaninfluentialschool,Iappreciatemoretodaymanyyearsafterleavingtheimpactofthatinfluenceonmylawdegreeandthedegreesallofouralumnihavereceived.Weshouldallbemindfulofandapprecia-tivethatourlawschool’simpactonthestate,nation,andworldhasbeensofar-reachingandlongstanding.Fornearly175years,ouralumnihavebeenleadersinallwalksoflife,fromthecountycourthousetothehallsofCongressandbeyond.Ihopeyou’llsharemyenthusiasmforthehonortheybringtoourschoolandtoallofusasalumni.
Asalumni,weoweaspecialobligationtoourschooltopromoteandsupportitstraditionofexcellence.Andwecandoitrightnow—inatangible,easy,andmeaningfulway—bypayingoursuccessforwardtocurrentstudentsandrecentgraduatesofIndianaLaw.Theseintelligentandcapableprofessionalstellusthattheyneedexperiencedmentorsmorethananythingelseastheyentertheworkingworld,andDeanParrishandhisstaffarecommittedtomakethishappen.Laterthissummer,you’llbereceivinganinvitationtoparticipatefromtheschool’sOfficeofCareerandProfessionalDevelopment,orifyou’dliketosignupnow,call812-855-0258,[email protected]’llparticipateinthisimportantinitiative.
OurJanuaryAlumniBoardmeetingaffordedusthechancetospendtimewithDeanParrish,andtheBoardagreedthattheexcitementheandthefacultyandstaffaregeneratingispalpable.Atthisyear’sgraduation,DeanParrishsaid“There’ssomethingspecialaboutIU,aboutbeingaHoosier.Don’tforgetit.Ourfuturesaretiedtogether.Astheschool’sstarrises,sodoesyours;andasyourstarrises,sodoesours.We’reamongtheverybestandweshouldn’tbeafraidtosayit.”Lawschoolsmayfacechallengestoday,butIampleasedtoreportthatourschoolisinexcellenthandswithaverybrightfuture.

Overthepastdecade,theIUMaurerSchoolofLawhasestablisheda
reputationasthegloballeaderinthestudyofthelegalprofession.
Previousissuesofergohavedescribedtheschool’sfar-reachingimpact
literallyacrosstheglobe—onconstitutionaldemocracyinBurma
andLiberia;oncybersecurityinEuropeandAsia;oninternational
intellectualpropertyissuesinEurope.
AssignificantasIndianaLaw’simpacthasbeenontheworldatlarge—
andithasbeensignificant—so,too,hastheschoolmadeitsmarkrighthere
athome.Intheclassroom,thecourtroomandtheboardroom,ourfaculty,
currentstudentsandalumniaremakingadifference—inIndiana’s92
countiesandbeyond,tothehallsofCongressandtheU.S.SupremeCourt.
It’sbeentruefornearly175years,anditwillcontinuetobetrueinthe
yearstocome.
Asthestate’sflagshiplawschoolandoneoftheoldestlawschoolsin
thenation,theMaurerSchoolofLawhasbeentheplacewherepublic

IndianaLaw’simpactonthestateandfederalbenchissubstantial,too.
Thirty-threeofouralumnihavesatontheIndianaCourtofAppeals—
morethantwiceasmanyasanyotherlawschool,and14federaldistrict
courtjudgeshaveoccupiedthefederaldistrictcourtbench—three
timesthenumberofthesecond-highestschool.Wecount17Indiana
SupremeCourtjusticesamongouralumni,includingitsnewestjustice,
Hon.Loretta Rush,whoisthesecondwomantoserveontheCourt.
Indeed,moreofourgraduateshaveservedinthepasthalfcenturyonthe
IndianaSupremeCourtthangraduatesfromanyotherlawschoolinthe
nation.AndHon.V. Sue ShieldsisthefirstwomaninIndianatoserveasa
trialcourtjudge,ontheCourtofAppeals,andasafederalmagistrate.
It’sworthunderscoringthatthislegacyofalumniexcellenceisn’toneofa
distantpast.Ouralumniranksarefilledwithimportantleadersinbusi-
ness,lawandpublicservice—rightnowandrighthereintheHoosierState.
InIndianaalone,theMaurerSchoolofLawcanproudlyclaimmorethan
100federalorstatejudges;morethan80corporateexecutives,including
CEOs,presidents,CFOs,COOsandexecutivedirectors;81general
counsels;88deputyandassistantprosecutors;21countybarassociation
presidents;eightpublicdefenders;andfiveassistantU.S.attorneys.
Ournewestgraduatesarealreadypreparingthemselvesasthenext
generationoflocalleaders.Thirty-sevenpercentofourlastthreegraduat-
ingclasseshavechosentostayandworkinIndiana—astrongresult,given
thatnearlytwo-thirdsofourstudentscomefromoutofstate.Andthenew
initiativesweareintroducingwithsomeofIndiana’smostprestigious
undergraduateinstitutions,suchastheRose-HulmanScholarsprogram,
willencourageevenmoreofourbestandbrightesttomakeanimpacton
thestate.

bytechnologicalinnovation.”
“MyRose-HulmanandIndianaLawdegreeshavebeenveryhelpfultomeinmycareerasapatentlawyer,”said
Michael M. Morris,JD’11,anassociateattheintellectualpropertylawfirmWoodardEmhardtMoriartyMcNett&
HenryinIndianapolis.“AtRose-Hulman,Ilearnedthetechnicalknowledgeandproblem-solvingskillsnecessary
tobeanengineer.TheMaurerSchoolofLawhelpedmegainastrongfoundationinpatentlawsothatImay
applymyengineeringbackgroundinthepreparationandprosecutionofpatentapplications.Iknowthatfuture
scholarshiprecipientswillexperiencesimilarbenefitsfrombothschools’programs.”
Rose-Hulmanwillnominatecurrentstudentsoralumnifortheprogrambeginningwiththefall2014enteringclass.
TheIUMaurerSchoolofLawandRose-HulmanInstituteofTechnologyhaveenteredintoamemorandumof
understandingestablishingascholarshipprogramforengineeringstudentsinterestedinstudyingintellectual
propertylaw.
TheRose-HulmanIntellectualPropertyLawScholarsProgramwillofferatleasttwoRose-Hulmangraduates
admittedtotheMaurerSchoolofLawascholarshipamountingto50percentofannualtuition,alongwithaccess
toaformalmentoringprogramandaresearchassistantpositioninthelawschool’sCenterforIntellectual
PropertyResearch.Thescholarshipwillreducethecostoflawschooltuitionoverthreeyearsbyapproximately
$45,000to$75,000,dependingonthestudent’sresidencyandotherfactors.
“Intellectualpropertylawisoneofthefastest-growingareasoftheprofession,”Dean Parrishexplained.“We
haveoneofthestrongestintellectualpropertylawprogramsinthenationandaredelightedtojoinforceswith
oneofthecountry’sleadingengineeringschoolsinfindingpathwaysfortalentedstudentstoadvancetheir
professionalinterests.”

ANNUAL GRADUATION PARTY RECOGNIZES CLASS OF 2014 TheLawSchoollibraryandadjoiningspaceswerefilledtocapacityonthenightofFriday,
May9,asfaculty,familyandfriendscelebratedtheachievementsoftheclassof2014.
Studentswererecognizedfortheircontributionstolawjournals,clinicalprogramsand
otheraspectsofstudentlife.
Duringthefestivities,theclassof2014presentedProfessorHannah Buxbaumwith
theGavelAward,whichisgivenannuallybythegraduatingclasstoafacultymember
forhisorheroutstandingcontributiontotheclass.ThiswasthefifthtimeBuxbaumhasreceivedtheaward.
Sheservedasinterimdeanformostoftheclassof2014’stenure,fromDecember2011untilJanuary2014.

SouthernDistrictofCalifornia;andstudentspeakerFrancisco Guzmán.Curielspokeofthetremendous
opportunitiesthatlawschoolaffordedhimasheandhisbrotherrosefromimmigrantstolawyersinonegeneration.
“Inmylegalcareerof35years,”hesaid,“Ihavecometorealizeonefundamentalandoverarchingtruth,
thatis,selflessserviceisthemeanstorealizehappiness,fulfillmentandjoy.Whereveryourjourneystakeyou,
neverforgethowmuchwehavetobegratefulforandalwaysaimtoserveyourfamily,yourcommunityandthis
greatnation.Ifyoudothis,Icanguaranteethatsuccesswillfollow.”
Guzmántracedhisownpath,arrivingintheU.S.fromtheDominicanRepublicasachildandwatchinghisparents
struggleasimmigrantsinthefearsomeworldofNewYorkCityinthe1990s.Hepaintedacompellingpictureof
thefutureforhisclassmates:“Weareleavingherewithpower—thepowerofthepenandthepowerofthemind,
tohelpthosethatneeditmost.SoIaskhowwillyouuseyourpower,howwillyouconnectwiththatmission
youwroteaboutinyourentranceessays?AreyougoingofftoDetroittoadvocateforbetterpublichousing?Areyou
headeddowntoTexastojoinyourfatherinacriminaldefensepractice?Ormaybeyou’llstayhereinIndiana
andclerkforsomegoodjudges?Whatever,whereveryouendup,don’tletthatpowergotowaste—youearnedit.”
Julie Laemmlepresentedtheclassof2014gifttotheschool.Asin2013,thisyear’spledgecampaignwasdedicated
totheLeonardD.FrommMemorialFundinhonoroftheschool’slongtimedeanofstudentswhodiedin2013.Forty-
sevenpercentoftheclassparticipated,withtotalcontributionsof$19,420.
Theschoolintroducedanewtraditionthisyear:familymembersofgraduateswereinvitedtothestage
toassistwithhooding.D.G. Elmore,JD’84,hoodedhisdaughter,Lauren;Joanna Salzarulo Hanley,JD’78,
recognizedherdaughter,Michaelene;andMatt Millis,JD’06,hoodedhissister,Elizabeth Bolka.
Members of the class of 2014 pledged more than $19,000 in honor of the late Leonard Fromm, former dean of students.
The campaign committee consisted of (standing) Jacob German, Charles Shaw, Jennifer Rulon, Michael Novak, Anita Foss, John Giacomantonio (seated), Leah Seigel, Julie Laemmle, and David Frazee. The class contribution is being matched again this year by a generous donation from Scott N. Flanders, JD’82.

havebeennamedMiltonStewartFellowsandwillparticipateassummerinternsinArgentina,Brazil,China,India,
Japan,SouthKoreaandThailandthroughthelawschool’sCenterontheGlobalLegalProfession.
Thecenter’suniqueprogramoffersstudentsexperiencesinavarietyofsettings,includingcorporations,highly
reputedlawfirmsandrights-basednon-governmentalorganizations.ThestudentshavebeennamedMiltonStewart
Fellowsinhonorofagenerousalumnus,Milton Stewart,JD’71,ofPortland,Ore.
“TheStewartFellowsprogramisinkeepingwiththecenter’smissionofdevelopingourstudents’abilitiestopractice
intheglobalizedlegalenvironmentasbusinesslawyers,public-sectorlawyersandsocialjusticeadvocates,”said
professorJayanth K. Krishnan,directoroftheIUMaurerSchoolofLaw’sCenterontheGlobalLegalProfession.
“WearegratefultoMiltandJudiStewartandtothemanyindividualsandorganizationsparticipatinginthisprogram
throughouttheworld.Withouttheirsupport,thisprogramwouldnotbepossible.”
Krishnanaddedthatnearly60studentshavebeennamedasStewartFellowssincelaunchedin2010.
“Wearesopleasedthattheprogramisgrowing,”saidprofessorChristiana Ochoa,anexpertongovernance
andhumanrightsinLatinAmerica.“Notonlyhaveweincreasedthenumberofstudentsparticipatingin
theStewartFellowsProgram,butwehavealsoexpandedthepresenceoftheprogramintoareasoftheworld
thatareimportanttoourstudents.WeareespeciallypleasedtoaddArgentinaandThailandtoourlistof
participatingcountriesthisyear.”

Law’sProtectiveOrderProjectcelebrated25yearsofservingclients
seekingrelieffromfamilyviolenceandsexualassault.Students,alumni
andcommunityvolunteersgatheredintheMootCourtRoomonApril25
tocommemoratePOP’simpactontheBloomingtoncommunity.
POPwasfoundedin1989bythen-Professor Lauren Robel,alongwith
herstudentJennifer Payne,JD’90.Sinceitsfounding,morethan600law
studentshavevolunteeredforPOP,providingservicestomorethan700
peopleinMonroeandsurroundingcounties.Volunteersareexposedto
avarietyoflegalexperiences,includingintakeinterviews,draftinglegal
documents,preparingforhearingsandappearingincourtonbehalfof

“Thelegislaturemadeitmuchhardertogetaprotectiveorder.Oneofthe
firstcases[wehad]thatsummerinvolvedawifeseekingaprotective
orderagainstherhusband.Werepresentedthewife.Herhusbandhad
thrownaheavytelephoneatherhead,smashingitonthewallafewinches
fromherhead.Afterourclienttoldherstorythejudgesaid,‘That’snot
domesticviolence—thephonedidn’thither.’Fortunately,aftermuch
discussionwepersuadedthejudgetoenteraprotectiveorder,butthe
messagewasclear:timeshadchanged.”

partinanumberofhistoricdecisions,includingBrown v. Board of Education.

TheCenterforIntellectualPropertyResearchhasrecentlyreceived
fundingfromIU’sOfficeoftheViceProvostforResearchtohelpestablish
anIPlawclinic.ThefundswillenabletheCentertohireafull-time
clinicalprofessorandtoexpandthecollaborationbetweentheIPclinic
andtheLawSchool’sElmoreEntrepreneurshipLawClinic.Meanwhile,
theIPclinichascompleteditsfirstyear,withtheparticipationofseveral
studentsandtheguidanceofthreealumnifromtheIndianapolisoffice
ofFaegreBakerDaniels:Norm Hedges,JD’98;Brad Maurer,JD’99,and
Jessica Van Dalen,JD’10.
“TheclinicisagreatopportunityforIPstudentstoputtheiracademic
knowledgeintopracticaluse,”saidVanDalen.“Duringthisinaugural
semester,theywereeagerandexcitedtoengagewiththeclinicclients,and
wereanxioustostartthevariousprojectsthattheIPclinicreceivedthis
semester.Itwasagreatwayforthestudentstoreceiveearlyconstructive
feedbackinamorerelaxedclinicalenvironment,ratherthanina
moredauntinglawfirmsetting.Webelievetheseexperienceshelpedthe
studentstogainabetterunderstandingofpracticingIPlaw,whichwill
givethemaprofessionalheadstart.”
VanDalenaddedthattheclinicalsoprovidedavaluableservicetothe
community.Notonlydidthestudentsreceiveactualclientworkand
practicalexperience,shesaid,buttheyalsoassistedclientswhootherwise
couldnotaffordtoprotectearly-stageintellectualpropertyduetofunding
constraints.“Additionally,ourworkprovidedusarareopportunitytodo
probonoserviceinourpracticearea,”sheconcluded.
Theclinic’sclientsreportagreatexperience.“TheIPclinicwroteaprovi-
sionalpatentapplicationformeandmycompanyAtlasEnergySystems,
LLC,”saidIanHamilton.“Theclinicexceededourexpectationsandthe
finalproductisgreat.Theprovisionalpatentapplicationissuperb.The
teamIworkedwithdidagreatjobinterpretingmyinventioneventhough
theyhadseennothinglikeitbefore.Overall,agreatexperienceforastart-
upcompanysuchasmine,especiallywiththeextremelylowpricetag.”

mindsofGregoryHess,theIndianaUniversitystudentwhowasarrestedatananti-warprotest,
andThomasSchornhorst,thelawyerandIUMaurerSchoolofLawprofessorwhorepresented
Hessincourt.
TheincidentinquestionoccurredonaspringdayinMay,whenprotestingstudentsblockeda
publicstreetoncampusanddidn’theedinstructionsfromthesherifftostepaside.AsHessrecalls,
“Thesheriff’sdepartmentformedalineattheendofthestreetandmarcheddownIndianaAvenue
toclearit.Iwalkedinfrontofthem.”Asprotestersmovedontothecurb,thesheriffheardHess
yell“f***”(althoughexactlywhatelsehesaidwouldlaterbeclarifiedincourt).“Thesheriffimme-
diatelygrabbedmeinabearhugandsaidIwasunderarrest,”Hessrecalled.
Meanwhile,atthelawschool,Schornhorst,nowaprofessoremeritus,remembers,“Astudentran
intomyofficeandsaidstudentswerebeingarrested.”Whileothersindeedwerearrested,“theonly
casethatwenttocourtwasGreg’s.Hefelthisfreespeechrightswerebeingviolated.”
ThefirsttrialtookplacebeforeajudgeinBloomingtonCityCourt.“Itdidn’tmakesensetotrythis
case;wewerehopingtogetitthrownout,”Schornhorstsays.HeevencalledanEnglishprofessor
asawitnessontheuseofthewordthatsooffendedthesheriff.OtherwitnessestestifiedthatHess,
whowasfacingthecrowdwithhisbacktothesheriff,hadsaid,“We’lltakethef***ingstreetlater”
or“We’lltakethef***ingstreetagain.”ButthejudgeruledthatHess’statementwas“intended
toincitefurtherlawlessaction...andwaslikelytoproducesuchaction.”HefoundHessguiltyof
violatingIndiana’sdisorderlyconductstatuteandfinedhim$25.

InitsNovember19,1973,decision,thecourtdistinguishedbetweenspeechthatincites“imminent
disorder”andspeechthatcallsforunlawfulactionatsomeunspecifiedtimeinthefuture,which
wouldbeprotectedundertheFirstAmendment.Inthiscase,thecourtsaid,“Indiana’sdisorderly
conductstatutewasapplied…topunishonlyspokenwords…Atbest,[Hess’]statementcouldbe
takenascounselforpresentmoderation;atworst,itamountedtonothingmorethanadvocacy
ofillegalactionatsomeindefinitefuturetime.ThisisnotsufficienttopermittheStatetopunish
Hess’sspeech.”

Farnsworthisdirectorofthelawschool’sgraduatelegalstudiesprogram
andteacheslegalwritingandresearchmethodsforgraduatestudents.
Herstudentssaidsheis“professionalanddiligent,withpersistencethat
drivesstudentstodotheirbest.”
Scottteachescoursesincriminallaw,criminalprocedureandfederal
jurisdiction.Hisstudentssayheis“anincredible,enthusiastic,thorough
andbrilliantprofessorwhoisenergeticandexcellentatkeepingthe
classfocusedonthetopicathand.”
HeadwaspresentedwiththeAdjunctFacultyTeachingAward.Asenior
lecturerofaccountingandDowChemicalCompanyDistinguished
LecturerattheIUKelleySchoolofBusiness,sheteachesaccountingfor
lawyers.Maurerstudentssaidsheisanexcellenteducatorbecauseshe
“makescomplicatedinformationeasilyanddigestibleandmakesdry
informationfunandinteresting.”
JohnsenwaspresentedtheLeonH.WallaceTeachingAward.Named
fortheschool’sformerdean,itisthehighestteachinghonorgiventoIU
MaurerSchoolofLawfaculty.
Anexpertinconstitutionallaw,particularlycivilrightsandtheseparation
ofpowers,JohnsenservedasactingassistantattorneygeneralintheOffice
ofLegalCounselunderPresidentBillClinton.Sheteachesvariouscourses
andseminarsinconstitutionallaw.Johnsenwascitedforateaching

Lowell E. Baier,classof1964,hashadacareerthathastakenhimfrom
practicingattorneytoentrepreneur,tirelessadvocatefornaturalresources
andwildlifeconservation,andnowauthor.
BaierreceivedhisB.A.ineconomicsandpoliticalsciencefromValparaiso
Universityin1961andhislawdegreein1964.Aftergraduationhe
practicedlawinWashington,D.C.,acityhehadgrowntolovewhen,
in1956,hiscongressman,Charles A. Halleck(R-Ind.),LLB’24,called
himtobeapageintheUnitedStatesHouseofRepresentatives.In1967
heformedBaierProperties,Inc.,aBethesda,Md.-baseddeveloperof
warehouses,residentialproperties,andaward-winningofficebuildings
andshoppingcenters.
Intheearly1970s,Baierwasoneof14foundersoftheWildSheepFounda-
tion,whichhascontributedmorethan$1millionannuallytore-establish
thehabitatofthefourspeciesofwildsheepinNorthAmerica.Hehas
establishedsimilarprogramsinRussiaandMongolia.Since1975,Baierhas
beenactiveintheBooneandCrockettClub,America’soldestwildlife
conservationorganization.HetooktheleadindraftingPresidentGeorge
H.W.Bush’swildlifeconservationagendain1979andhasledinthe
formationofPh.D.programsinnaturalresourcesandwildlifeconserva-
tionmanagementatfiveuniversities.From2004-2007,heledanational
campaigntoraise$6.5milliontopurchaseforthefederalgovernment
thelastandlargestremainingpieceofprivateland(24,550acres)thatwas
initiallyRoosevelt’sElkhornRanch.
InsupportoftwobillspendinginCongresswhichheauthored,Baier
recentlycompletedabook,America’s Crippling Battle for its Lands,
Endangered Species, and their Critical Habitat: Inside the Equal Access to
Justice Act.Hisnextbook,Voices from the Wilderness: A Biography,which
celebratesthe50thanniversaryoftheWildernessAct,isexpectedsoon.
Baierhasbeenrecognizedmanytimesforhisextraordinarypublic
serviceatthelocallevelandforhisconservationworknationally.Hewas
Rockville,Maryland’sCitizenoftheYearin1988.In2008,hewasnamed
ConservationistoftheYearbytheNationalFishandWildlifeFounda-
tion.In2010Outdoor LifemagazineselectedBaierastheConservationist
oftheYear,andtheAssociationofFishandWildlifeAgenciessimilarly

Sara Yang Bosco,classof1983,isthedaughterofChineseparentswho
cametotheUnitedStatesinthelate1940sandearly‘50s.Shewasborn
andraisedinSouthBend,Ind.,andgraduatedfromtheUniversityof
NotreDamebeforeenrollingintheMaurerSchoolofLawin1980.Shehas
beenresidentinHongKongsince1991.
Apartfromafive-yearperiodasalawyerinNewYorkCityinthelate‘80s,
BoscohasspentallofhercareerinAsia.ShewasanattorneyinaTaipei
lawfirmandapartnerintheHongKongofficeofBaker&McKenziebefore
joiningtheHongKongofficeofPerkinsCoieLLP,aSeattle-basedfirmwith
morethan900lawyers.ShebuiltherreputationasanoutstandingChina
practicelawyerduringtherapidgrowthinthatcountry’seconomy,and
wasnamedoneofAsiaLaw’sLeadingLawyersforChinaandM&Ain2001
to2004consecutively.
In2005,Boscowasnamedgeneralcounsel,AsiaPacific,ofEmerson,a$25
billion,132,000-employeecompany.EmersonisaFortune 500diversified
globalmanufacturingandtechnologycompany,specializinginnetwork

oneofFortune’sMostAdmiredCompanies.AclientofBoscosincethe
1990s,Emersonofferedherthepositionofgeneralcounselthreetimes
beforesheultimatelyagreedtoaccept.In2008,shewaspromotedto
presidentofEmersonAsiaPacific,whichincludes37,000employeesin
morethan40manufacturingfacilitiesand29engineeringanddevelop-
mentcenters.BoscoisthefirstwomanpresidentofEmerson’sAsiaPacific
operations,andsheisalsochairmanofEmersonElectric(China)Holdings
Co.,Ltd.ShecurrentlyservesontheBoardofGovernorsoftheAmerican
ChamberofCommerceinHongKong.
Donald P. Dorfman,classof1957,isadedicatedalumnusofIndiana
UniversityandtheMaurerSchoolofLawandadistinguisheddefenseat-
torney,committedtoservicetohisclients,veteransandhisalmamater.
Dorfmanembodiesthevalueofhardwork,integrityandthetransforma-
tivenatureofhighereducation.Hisfamilydidnothavemuchmoneyto
investinacollegeeducation,soDorfmanworkedandsavedmoneysothat
hecouldattendIU,thecollegeofhisdreams.Healsoworkedthrough-
outhisundergraduateandlawschoolcareers—asadishwasher,busboy,
waiterandahumansubjectforthePsychologyDepartment.
Upongraduatingwithhislawdegreein1957,Dorfmanwascommissioned
asafirstlieutenantintheJudgeAdvocateGeneral’sDepartmentofthe
U.S.AirForce.HelaterjoinedtheAirForceReserveandretiredasa
colonel.HeeventuallysettledinSacramento,Calif.,wherehewasadeputy
districtattorneyforSacramentoCountyandasuccessfulcriminal
defenselawyer.Throughouthiscareer,Dorfmanhastakentoheartthe
constitutionalguaranteethatalldefendantsdeserveanallyandadvocate
ofthehighestorder.Hewasthefounderandfirstpresidentofthe
SacramentoCriminalLawyersAssociation,amemberoftheboardof
theIndigentDefensePanelandofthePeerReviewCommitteeofthe
SacramentoCountyBarAssociation.Heisalsoamemberoftheboard
ofJewishFamilyServices.
Dorfman’sserviceandphilanthropytoIndianaUniversityandtheMaurer
SchoolofLawqualifyastrulyextraordinary.Heisthepresidentofthe
SacramentochapteroftheIUAlumniAssociation,wasamemberofthe
IUAlumniAssociationExecutiveCouncil,andhasservedontheLaw
School’sBoardofVisitorssince1997.Duringtheuniversity’sMatchingthe
Promisecapitalcampaign,Dorfmanestablishedaneed-basedscholarship
atthelawschool,sothathecouldassiststudentswholikewiseneededto
worktocompletetheirdegrees.Hehasbeenanactiverecruiterforboth
IUandtheLawSchool,andhehassingle-handedlyplacedmoreMaurer
graduatesinCaliforniathananyotheralumnus.
Dorfmanhasbeenrecognizedforhislegalassistancetomenandwomen
returningfromserviceinthemilitary.HeisamemberoftheCalifornia
StateCommitteeoftheEmployer’sSupportoftheGuardandReserve,
andactsasanombudsmanforemployeeswhoencounteremployment
difficultieswhentheyreturntocivilianlife.Forthiswork,hereceived
theSevenSealsAward,thehighestawardtheorganizationconfers.He
hasalsoservedasthepresidentoftheDepartmentofCaliforniaReserve

Patricia A. McNagny,classof1951,hashadadistinguishedrecordofwork
bothinthejudiciaryandasacivicleader.BorninFortWayne,Ind.,
McNagnyisthedaughterofRalphGates,whoservedasgovernorofthe
statefrom1945to1949.SheattendedIndianaUniversityandgraduated
withhonorsin1948withamajorinhistory.Shecompletedherlaw
degreein1951andmarriedPhilM.McNagny,Jr.,duringherthirdyear.
PhilMcNagnywentontoasuccessfulcareeratGatesGates&McNagny
inColumbiaCity,Ind.
Formanyyears,McNagnyprimarilyworkedfromhomedoingwillsand
estateworkwhilesheraisedtheirfourdaughters.In1969shebegan
workingwithherhusband,continuinguntilhisdeathin1981.Thefollow-
ingyear,shesuccessfullyranforjudgeoftheWhitleyCountyCourt.In
1991,sheleftthebenchtojoinherdaughterMarciainthepracticeoflaw.
Duringhertimeonthecourt,McNagnyplayedanactiverolebringing
newinitiativestothecountycourtsystem.Sheintroducedcommunity
serviceintocriminalsentencinginhercounty,anddevelopedcounseling
servicesforviolentoffendersanddrugandalcoholoffenders.She
promotedGEDeducationtojailinmatesandadvocatedawideruseofwork
release.Shewasinstrumentalininstallingcomputersinthecourtsand
countyoffices,andworkedtowardtheestablishmentofaCommunity
CorrectionsDepartment.
Activeinthelocalandstatebarassociations,sheservedassecretaryof
theIndianaStateBarAssociation,andin1994shewasnamedaFellowin
theIndianaBarFoundation.ShewaspresidentofthePeabodyLibrary,
andservedonitsboardformanyyears.Shewasvicechairpersonofthe
WhitleyCountyRepublicanCommitteeandadirectoroftheWhitley
CountyDrugAwarenessProgramandtheOtisR.BowenCenterforHuman
Services.Forhersuccessfulcampaigntopurchasea100-acretractofland
onCrookedLake,andforthepersonaldonationoflanddedicatedas
theCrookedLakeNaturePreserveinhonorofherfather,shewasgiven

intheirfield.Inadditiontoservingonseverallegislativecommittees,
draftingandproposingbills,educatingandmentoringprosecutorsand
otherlawenforcementofficers(includingtheauthorshipofanethics
manualforprosecutors),andhelpingrewritetheIndianapenalcode,one
ofJohnson’smostsignificantachievementswastoimplementandoversee
astatewidecomputersystemlinkingstateandlocalofficesinthecriminal
justicesystem.Overthecourseofhisnearlyfortyyearsofpublicservice,
hewasalsoahighlysought-outlecturer,frequentlycalledupontoshare
hisexpertknowledgeonavarietyoftopicsinthearenaoflawenforcement
onboththestateandlocallevel.In2011,GovernorMitchDanielsrecog-
nizedJohnsonasaDistinguishedHoosier,adistinctionbestowedupon
thosewhohavemadesignificantcontributionstotheStateofIndianain
theserviceofitscitizens.TheIndianaSupremeCourtalsorecognizedhim
forhisyearsofservice.

wasacomfortablepersonwithwhomtowork.“Hewasagenialfellow,
butheknewhowtogetresults.”Greenwaldsaid.
In1978,hejoinedtheU.S.DepartmentofJustice,andin1979wasappoint-
edthefirstdirectoroftheAttorneyGeneral’sAdvocacyInstitute,whichhe
reorganizedandexpanded.In1980,theAdvocacyInstitutewascombined
withtheJusticeDepartment’sLegalEducationInstitute,whichprovided
continuingeducationoflawyersandparalegalsforallbranchesofthe
federalgovernment.
Forthenextfiveyears,Mr.Carterservedasdirectorofthenewlydesignat-
edOfficeofLegalEducation.Helefttheposttoassumehispositionwith
theAmericanBarAssociation.
In1970,CarterjoinedthelawfacultyoftheCatholicUniversityofAmerica,
wherehenotonlytaughtconventionallegalcoursesbutalsoestablished
apioneeringclinicallegal-educationprogramservingWashington’sinner
city.Ayearlater,whileatCatholicUniversity,hestartedanationalpro-
gramtoprovidecontinuingeducationfor3,000legal-servicesattorneys
whoseworkwasfundedbythefederalOfficeofEqualOpportunity.
HehelpedorganizethenewLegalServicesCorp.in1975,andspentthe
nexttwoyearsasdirectorofitsOfficeofProgramSupport,whichtrained
thestaffsoflegal-servicesofficesacrossthecountry.Forhisdedication
tothehigheststandardsofhisprofession,Mr.Carterwaselectedin1997
