News from Delabole Primary School

Special Guests

Many thanks to members of the local community for coming in and sharing their knowledge, wisdom andexperiences in Class One. We have welcomed a rich variety of people from different walks of life explainingto the children their roles and what they do in the working life. It’s not only a valuable learning experience forall the children, but also a pleasure.

Learning environments

A new mural in the Outdoor Learning area for Foundation Class was commissioned by the School and it hasbeen recently completed. With help from children from different classes, a theme was chosen and then designswere developed and drawn. The children’s ideas were then projected and painted on to the wall with greatsuccess. It would not have been possible without the extremely creative and hard work (through the inclementweather) of two of our parents and the whole school is extremely grateful.Judy Gidzewicz, Head Teacher .

Garden Stories from Cedarcroft - MarchWell if it’s not one thing it’s another, last year we were frozen until the end of April this year we are being drowned andblown to bits. Lets hope as I write this that March brightens up and we get to see that yellow ball in the sky, can’t evenremember its name as haven’t seen it for so long! A gardeners life is never easy but it’s a good challenge to get thingsgrowing and when it works it is a fabulous sight to behold.Due to the dreadful conditions we had to cancel our new show garden in February but the good news is we will beopening the new show garden on 29TH and 30TH MARCH. Pop down to listen to our garden designer and get somegreat inspiration. (See our advert for full details)

The JobsPlant lilies in large patio pots for summer displays. Prune shrub roses to low new shoots. Cut overgrown honeysucklestems close to their base. Grow early-maturing potatoes in a bag of compost. Fork compost into beds to prepare soil forplanting. Chit potatoes. Sow cucumbers, tomatoes, aubergines and peppers.Sow summer bedding plants. Growblackcurrants Blackcurrants are easy to grow. Bushes establish and fruit with relatively little efffort and will crop plentifullyfor many years. You may find you have more fruit than you can use immediately but the berries freeze well, so you canenjoy the fruit all year. You'll get the largest harvest and sweetest fruits from bushes grown in a sunny spot. Howeverthey'll still produce a reasonable crop when grown in light shade. They relish a little additional watering during dry spellsand some feeding and mulching from time to time. They rarely suffer much in the way of pests and diseases.

Creative Activity,

Plant a sub tropical garden in a container. Start planning now, research your plants and search for some big containersto plant into. Remember to think about the height some plants will get to and place them so as not to overshadow theothers, pendulous grasses can be put at the front. Use large cattle troughs, tin baths, tea chests or plastic water tanks.

Filling a large planter with sub-tropical plants is a perfect way to add instant impact to your garden. It gives you thechance to fulfill your wildest planting ambitions and grow bold, statuesque plants. Many sub-tropical or tender plants areperfect for planting in a large container, as they provide masses of growth in just one season. The impact made to yourgarden can be mind-blowing Aeonium 'Zwartkop,' Canna, Dahlia, Euphorbia, Campsis are some ideas for containerplanting. We will have a good range of sub tropical plants available at the nursery in May.

Old garden titbitsUsing milk as fertilizer has been an old-time remedy in the garden for many generations. In addition to helping with plantgrowth, feeding plants with milk can also alleviate many issues in the garden—from calcium deficiencies to viruses andpowdery mildew. Milk is a good source of calcium, for plants. It contains beneficial proteins, vitamin B and sugars thatare good for plants, improving their overall health and crop yields. The microbes that feed on the fertilizer componentsof milk are also beneficial to the soil. Like us, plants use calcium for growth. Blossom end rot, which is commonly seenin squash, tomatoes and peppers, is caused by a calcium deficiency. Feeding plants with milk has been used with varyingeffectiveness in pesticide applications, especially with aphids. Perhaps the best use of milk has been in reducing thetransmission of mosaic leaf viruses, such as tobacco mosaic. Milk has been used as an effective antifungal agent, specifically in the prevention of powdery mildew. Drawbacks include: Using too much milk is not a good idea since thebacteria in it will spoil, resulting in a foul odor and wilty, poor growth. The fat in milk can produce unpleasant odors as itbreaks down as well. The benign fungal organisms that colonize leaves and break down milk can be aestheticallyunattractive.

Happy gardening from Penny and Sarah………………Cedarcroft Plants St Tudy

St Teath Parish Council ReportCouncil Matters:We are looking for two more Councillors. We were one Councillor short after the local elections and one Councillorhas moved outside the three mile limit. Maybe you have just moved to the area, have just retired, or may be lookingfor a way to get more involved with the community in which you live. Ring me or call in for a chat.Planning Matters:It was sad to see the latest wind turbine being erected by the old railway line. The Parish Councillors did their best tostop this happening but as all planning guidelines had finally been satisfied the County planners did not listen toParish Council objections.A letter has been sent to the head of planning, from the Parish Council Chairman, expressing this Council’s seriousconcerns over some of the decisions reached by planning officers, seemingly taking scant regard of the opinion ofresidents, and recommendations of Town and Parish Councillors, who, often having site visited, and obtained theviews of those ‘for’ and ‘against’ an application, then deliberate long and hard over the applications put before themfor their input, only to be completely, disregarded by the planning officer. Why ask TCs and PCs for their opinion on a planning application, then ignore the answer?Consultation Matters:It is a pity so few people have sent me their e-mail addresses. 9 people in Delabole and just 2 in St Teath havecontacted me. If I had your e-mail address I could send you some important information about consultations comingfrom County Hall. Consultations on Adult Care, School Transport, Mobile Libraries, Affordable Housing to name but afew. These documents are interesting, and of concern to most of us in one way or another. The consultations provideus with an opportunity to have a say over the future of our County and the services provided by Cornwall Council tohelp our children, our Mums and Dads, Grandparents and others to whom cuts in these services could make life moredifficult, and in some cases, cause real hardship. If no-one comments on these Consultations, County will think we don’t care and just go ahead with their plansregardless. I bet if everyone in Cornwall responded County would take notice. As always, apathy is our downfall. Wedo nothing, then grumble when others do things we don’t like.Parking Matters:People live in daily fear of their property being hit by lorries, children and the elderly risk getting run down crossingthe road, on the zebra crossing, because they can’t see round the vehicles parked on it, drivers play ‘RussianRoulette’ daily at Pengelly, Mothers push prams into the road because the pavement is blocked by parked cars, orworse still, lorries, and all because drivers will not park responsibly and walk a few yards to their destination. I didreceive one suggestion following my appeal last month for help to solve the problem of parking, particularly in StTeath, but it was so ‘off the wall’ I won’t bother repeating it. Suffice it to say that dynamite and a ring road are probablynot an option! What Really Matters:Keep safe and warm during all this rough weather and try to look in on an elderly neighbour to see they are alright. Itwould help if the drain outside your house were kept clear of leaves and rubbish. Let us hope by the time you read thisthe weather will have cheered up a bit and Spring will have sprung.

Contact Matters:Please make contact if you think you would like to help the Parish Council achieve more for our villages. Get in touchif you have ideas, suggestions or a local problem.

Nimble Fingers

So we’re on to our fourth meeting(Wednesday 5th March2.30pm - 4ish at the MethChapel) and we’re a hardy bunch- even turning up on the day of oneof the awful storms.

It was great to meet people who’donly lived in the village for a little while as well as thosewho’d resided here rather longer.

The purpose of the group was to bring along an article thatyou’d started and never finished, meet other crafters, knit, sew or chatter, plus the obligatory cuppa.

Looking around at the activities on display it appeared thatJo took the record for the oldest uncompleted article, partof the Bayeux tapestry (not the original!) started in 1966,then Barbara turned up with a tablecloth she’d begun asan entry for the Camelford & Wadebridge Circuit YouthFestival in the early sixties - but Mary took the prize withan embroidery she’d bought on the occasion of herengagement in 1961.

You haven’t got to be brilliant or working on an antique, ifyou’d just like a chat and some company it’d be super tosee you.

Delabole Community Fund RaisingShop

Do You Remember In Town Tonight? The programme was broadcast on the Home Service andwould begin with a young voice proclaiming “In TownTonight”, whilst you could hear the roar of the busy Londontraffic going by. Then a deep voice would say, “Stop!” then,‘Once more we stop the roar of the London traffic to see‘Who Is In Town Tonight’!’ At the end of the programme avoice would say, “Carry on London ”. The presenter wouldtalk each week ‘to personalities, who have come by land, sea and air, to be In Town Tonight’. Memories, which nodoubt a lot of you have hidden away inside your head!!.The marvellous signature tune The Knightsbridge March, written by the well known composer Eric Coates, introduced the weekly programme. In Town Tonight was a very popular BBC radio programmebroadcast on Saturday evenings from 1933 to 1960(except for a period of 26 weeks in 1937, when 'The BBCPresents The ABC', was broadcast instead). There wasan uproar in the country because of this interruption towhat was a very popular programme. This was one of theearly introductions of the’ Chat Show',which is still verypopular on Television today.A series of outside broadcast spots were included in the1940s: "Standing on the Corner" with Michael Standing, then "Man on the Street" with Stewart Macpherson andHarold Warrender, and "On the Job" with John Ellison, later Brian Johnston. Johnston continued in the series with"Let's Go Somewhere" from 1948 to 1952. He stayed aloneovernight at Madam Tussaud's in the Chamber of Horrors.I remember I used to listen to In Town Tonight regularlyand on this evening they kept returning to the Chamber ofHorrors to see how he was getting on. He said he was‘Very nervous!’, Later Brian rode a circus horse, lay undera passing train, was hauled out of the sea by a helicopterand was attacked by a police dog. A very adventurousman and he also became a great cricket commentator. The 1000th episode included appearances by Errol Flynn,Gary Cooper, Jane Russell, and Doris Day, and wasbroadcast a few weeks before the show ended. Theprogramme finished its run shortly afterwards but at theend it was simultaneously broadcast on Radio andTelevision and presented by John Ellison. Antony Bilbowand Nan Winton. They were the last presenters of theprogramme and carried on to its successor which beganafter a missing week. After its demise it was replaced byIn Town Today, which was broadcast at lunchtimes andran until 1965. The Regal Man

St Petroc’s.I would like to thank everyone who so kindly has leftsleeping bags, quilts, clothes, shoes etc in my porch forme to take down to Truro for the homeless. They havebeen over whelmed and are grateful for all the good thingsyou have given them.

Our weather, since December, has been atrocious and Icannot imagine what it would be like walking the streetsin all this wind and rain. So you can imagine how gratefulthey are for all the warm weather clothing, water proofs, boots, shoes etc you have given.

Please keep it coming as there seems no let up to thisterrible weather. Remember washing powder, shower gels, shampoos, cup-a-soups, tinned meat, sausages andbeans and any other tins of food (that can be eaten cold)would be very welcome. The homeless can go into StPetroc’s for the occasional shower or bath and to get theirclothes washed, which when they are cold and wet can bea Godsend.

Please continue to leave contributions for St Petroc’s inmy porch.

Thank you once again. As I have said, many times,Delabole residents are fantastic.

Termyn Gwari Fleghes(childrens playtime, in Cornish)

Something new this month, a page for children up to about11 years old( and the adults and older brothers and sisterswho may need to help them J)

This month there are two special days you will probably want to celebrate. The first is on Tuesday 4th March , Shrove Tuesday or as you might rather call it – Pancake Day!!Now I happen to think pancakes are very good any time, so here is a recipe, its very easy to mix upbut you will need an older person to do the cooking because the pan is very hot.Pancakes – you will need: 100g (4oz) plain flour, pinch of salt, 1 egg, 300ml( ½ pint) milkWhat you do: Put the flour and the pinch of salt in a big bowl. Crack the egg into a small bowl andwhisk it with a fork. Make a dip in the middle of the flour then pour in the egg. Slowly pour half themilk into the flour and gradually whisk them together. Keep whisking until the batter is smooth andcreamy with no lumps. Whisk in the rest of the milk, the mixture is called batter now and should bea bit bubbly. Leave the batter to rest a minute. An older person can get the frying pan out now andput some oil in. When the pan is hot, the adult can pour in enough batter to make a thin layer. In lessthan 1 minute the pancake should be ready to flip over – you can try tossing the pancake if you like, but I think it might be a waste of a perfectly good pancake! After 1 more minute the pancake shouldbe done and now you can EAT IT!! And then make some more, till all the batter is used up.The best bit is choosing what to eat on it----- you choose---, honey, jam, maple syrup, lemon, brownsugar, all are good J

The second special day is Mothering Sunday or Mothers day which is on 30th March, when wecan do something special for any mum or gran or auntie who is important to us. Maybe you wouldlike to try to make a fabric brooch or decoration? You need bits of different material, a pretty button, fabric glue, a safety pin, some thread and scissors.Get someone older to help you cut out 4 or 5 flower shapes from different material. The biggestshould be about 8 cms across, the others should gradually get smaller. Use the glue to stick theflowers into a stack, biggest on the bottom, smallest on the top. Glue the button in the middle of theflower. Fix the pin to the back by threading a small piece of fabric though the pin and gluing it to theback of the flower. You can add extra decoration with beads and ribbon. If you are feeling very craftyyou could make a card that matches, with paper flowers made the same way.I will be including ideas on nature (an excellent website btw adults is www.naturedetectives.org.uk,run by the Woodland Trust) gardening , quizzes, colouring and jokes on future pages, I hope youenjoyed this page, if you have any ideas , put them in the Slate boxes (there is one in Spar).]

On the top of Caerphilly MountainWhilst I quietly say a prayerWith my sweet dog MeganSitting beside me there. It always seems a wondrous thingOccurs just when I’m doneAs from the bracken a skylark comes forthAnd starts singing his glorious song.As higher and higher he goes in the skyHe trills with all his mightAnd me just quietly standing thereIs filled with wondrous delight.Meg and I stand and listenTill every last note is doneAnd we can see and hear him no moreAnd silence again has come. Then heart full and senses tinglingWe go upon our wayWith a quiet word of thanksFor the magic of the day.

Fun Food for Little Folk from ‘The Food Fairy’.Both children and adults will enjoy this simple, tasty dish.

You will need;-

Dried Pasta. (Shells, tubes, twists or bows are great)

Large tin chopped tomatoes

1 large onion 4 mushrooms

1 small cougette

1 green and 1 red sweet pepper

6 cherry tomatoes

1 vegetable Oxo cube and a table spoon of dark soy sauce

½ teaspoon dried mixed herbs or a hand full of fresh chopped herbs

100 grms grated cheese

Cook the pasta as directed on the packet. It should tell you how much to allow for each person.

Coat a large frying pan with olive oil, preheat the oil, then add the chopped onion, chopped peppers, sliced mushroomsand courgette. Cook gently until the onion is tender. Add the tin of tomatoes, including all the liquid. Add the dried herbs, soy sauce and the stock cube. Heat through gently, stirring well. At this point you could add a few frozen peas or sultanas,or both if you like. Simmer gently for a few minutes. If you are using fresh herbs add them at this point.

Drain the cooked pasta in a colander , then add to the mixture in the pan. Remove from the heat and stir together tocoat the pasta in the sauce.

Serve in pasta bowls sprinkled with grated cheese and the cherry tomatoes cut in halves or quarters.

You can vary the vegetables you use and the amounts. Try leeks , celery or aubergines. Try chopped, crispy baconinstead of cheese. The Food fairy gives you the ideas, you can add your own magic!!

Delabole United Football ClubI expect many of you have forgotten that there is a football team in the village. We have not played a game sincebefore Christmas because of the awful weather we have been having. The season has started poorly for the club withsome weekends even struggling for a side. But now thanks to a few players returning to the club there is a bit moreoptimism around the club. We have 10 games left to play this season and a strong concerted effort will be needed forus to avoid relegation. The club is always looking for new players (new players can sign on up to the end of March) oranybody that would willing to help in the running of the club or offer help in any form. The team trains at CamelfordSchool on Tuesday evenings at 6.30pm. For any further information please contact the Secretary Adrian Pooley on01840212565.

Ecumenical Service

(Linda, I can see you trying to hide behind Marion!)

The service, entitled ‘Is Christ Divided?’, based on ideas prepared by Canadian Christians, was led by Rev Bryan andClare Salzmann and was attended by housegroups, Anglicans and Methodists. Worship concluded with sung Communionand was followed by a delicious lunch in the schoolroom.

Family Breakfast

This was taken at February’s Family Breakfast , just afterthe craft activities had started and whilst breakfast was stillbeing munched. The next one’s at 9.30am on March 2nd at theMethodist Church. Not sure what the theme’s going to bebut can guarantee that Barbara’s bacon will be as goodas always.Great to see familiar faces from previous Breakfasts andlovely to see new visitors, including Hannah, who broughtalong the twins for the first time.

TREVENA-TINTAGELWOMEN’SINSTITUTE

At our meeting in January, we had Justine Cook who isthe manager of the Hospice Shop in Tintagel. She cameand talked about being the manager of such a shop.

She brought with her several things including a blackpolythene sack with a load of things inside, just as shewould receive things in the shop. She then proceeded toempty the sack and use some of it to dress a dummy fora window display.

She then showed us some of the more unusual items, some that would go off to auction as they were worthprobably more money than anyone would pay in the shop. She also commented that nothing that arrived at the shopwas wasted, if it wasn’t good enough to sell in the shop –it was sold on as metal, rags etc., so everything is worthsending to a Charity Shop because it all makes money forthe charity.

On the 17th March it is our Annual Meeting, when thecommittee and officers are elected, and there is a reviewof the year’s meetings, but there is also the time to chatand the welcome cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit. You are all welcome to join the W.I. and we do give newmembers a welcome, so if you fancy a night out with the‘girls’, do come and join us. Getting fit for 2014Users of Camelford Leisure Centre are celebrating the start of itssecond year as a community run centre. In January last year the leisure centre re-opened its doors with newmanagement and a board of directors made up of members of thecommunity. The team, who took on the challenge of saving thevaluable facility that had been running at a financial loss, reportthat the centre is in much better shape than previous years. Theyacknowledge that there is still a lot of hard work to do to but plansare being put in place this year to ensure long term sustainability. Many new members have signed up in January as they set theirgoals for getting fit and healthy in the New Year.Wayne Jordan-Shilling, Managing Director, is not surprised that somany people turn to the leisure centre at this time of year, saying“January is a great time to start to get fit. People set their NewYear resolutions and they seem to have renewed energy. After allthat sitting around at Christmas and with Spring just round the

corner, there’s no better time to shake off the bad habits and start working on leading a healthier lifestyle. The leisurecentre can really help people achieve their goals.”One man who has taken the plunge is Sam Capstick (pictured, receiving his new membership card). Mr Capstick says:“I recently suffered a torn cruciate ligament playing football and took advantage of Camelford Leisure Centre’s brilliantspecial offer to help aid my recovery. The centre has a real community feel and the staff are passionate about makingeveryone’s visit as comfortable and as beneficial as possible, whether you're after increased physical ability or just goodold fashioned fun!”Sam went on to say that he appreciates the importance of the community’s involvement in keeping the leisure centreviable: “I can't help but think with more participation from members of the public the centre will grow into something evenmore special and even now it's certainly improved my lifestyle, I couldn't live without it at the moment. With that I stronglyurge members of the community to give it a go and now is as good a time as any with the new year offers.”Camelford Leisure Centre will be marking its first anniversary with an open day and a number of special offers, including12 months for the price of 10 for new members who sign up before the end of February, and the management team arehappy to provide answers to enquiries from anyone interested to join in. From Rev. Peter DixonDear friends,I have an inherent fear of the sea! There – I have said it!! While it is calm and the sun is shining, the prospect of a dip in thecooling briny is decidedly attractive, however when the surf transforms into a seething white foam that is thrown with such brutalforce against the land, I am far happier watching from afar. I am sure many of us have been lost for words at destruction inflictedupon homes and livelihoods as well as the changing pattern of the coastline that seems to present a new vista each time thechurning murky depths recede. Charlotte and I have enjoyed many a perfect moment on Trebarwith Strand, but the neatlystacked boulders that framed the sandy shore are now scattered like jetsam by the awesome power of the sea. There have been some painful moments experienced by those in our communities as well as those ‘up country’ and no doubt, with no imminent break in the weather pattern (as I write!) we might all wonder how much worse it will get?In scripture, there is a story of Jesus and his disciples in a boat on the Sea of Galilee when a storm blows up. Jesus is asleepin the bottom of the boat blissfully unaware of the terror that is consuming his friends above. The disciples sense their end isnear as the boat is no defence from the squall and they are at the mercy of the raging waves. As a last resort, they rush to theirsleeping master – “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” (Mark 4:38). Jesus awoke and ‘rebuked the wind, andsaid to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was dead calm’. (Mark 4:39). In the unfolding quietness Jesussays, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” (Mark 4:40). The men are astounded, so astounded in fact that it is as ifthey see Jesus in a new light. ‘And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even thewind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:41).The storms that we witness around us have such destructive forces, land is reshaped, communities are turned upside downand there is real fear that homes and livelihoods will never be the same again. Although these are real and we pray ferventlyfor all those shaken by the sovereignty of nature, they can also be metaphors from our own lives. The storms that rage aroundus can be as frightening as those that rage in our heads and hearts. The disciples did not give up, nor were they consumed bythe rising storm, they woke their teacher and friend and called for help. Their words were clumsy and perhaps even a littleselfish, but when the wind and waves abated, their fear was transformed to great awe.Give us Lord the grace to walk by faith, through every storm of life to keep our eyes on you.And when we fail to see, or start to sink, stretch out your hand to raise us up.So may we learn to hold to you through good and ill, until we come to the haven where we would be,in everlasting joy and peace. Amen. (Jeffrey John)With every good wish and blessing, Peter
