N 1914, World War I was under way. Battles wereraging on the seas and the future was in a stateof uncertainty. In that year of turmoil, EricHassell was born and a future of seafaring waswritten in the waves of time. Eleven years later,

Eric Hassell’s father and grandfather, both known menof the seas, insisted that their progeny embark on ajourney that would mould him into the man that wouldcreate a company that has endured for 45years.

Born with “salt in his veins,” the 11-year-old Hassellset out in 1926 aboard a 65-foot trading schooner,Edward VII, to craft his knowledge and skill for the finefuture that lay ahead of him. The young Hassell would

be a deck boy doing choressuch as swabbing the decksand splicing ropes but whennot consumed withresponsibilities of the ship, hecould be found reading.Learning was a passion thatwould serve him well as heprogressed through hierarchyto become a captain just adecade later.

After serving hisapprenticeship, Hassell tookover the captaincy of EdwardVII. He also captained otherboats, including Comrade,Manuata and the Lucille Smithbefore taking over themotorised and ill-fated Zipperin 1959.

Four years into the captaincy of the Zipper, thevessel succumbed to the seas and began taking onwater, marking the first sailing mishap for Hassell in 27years at sea. Though the crew was rescued by apassing ship, this proved to be a crossroad in hiscareer as he had previously vowed never to return tothe seas were a vessel to slump beneath the waves

with him aboard. In the life of a mariner, the journeys instil a desire

for adventure and movement. This desire kept Hassellrestless and so he ventured into the entrepreneurialworld and founded a small business in Barnes Building, located then near to the Chamberlain Bridge on BridgeStreet. In 1969, the year of the first moonwalk, EricHassell & Son Ltd. (EHS) was founded.

One year into business, with his son Geoffrey, theagency was handling almost 100 inter-island freightersthat called at Barbados and would prove a powerhousein the industry with the innovations to come. In 1973,the first open hatch bulk carriers of grain, corn andrice, was introduced, revitalising the industry withvessels fitted with their own conventional slewingcranes and with their own grabs, optimal for thedischarge operation.

Prior to the inception of EHS, all inter-island motorvessels were represented by the British West IndiesSchooner Owners Association and utilised theCareenage. When that company went out of business,EHS took over 90 per cent of the vessels becoming the

In 1997, the company beganrepresenting freight forwardingcompanies and in 2002 won the

right to represent SeaboardMarine, a container carrierwhich has provided regular andefficient service from the UnitedStates to the Caribbean andCentral and South America forover 31 years.

The continued growth ofEHS, now under the leadershipof managing director Erica Luke(granddaughter of Hassell), isrepresented by the creation of two subsidiary companies.

Message from Professor Sir Trevor A. Hassell, chairman of Eric Hassell & Son Limited on theoccasion of its 45th anniversary.

RIC HASSELL & SON LTD wasestablished, by the late Captain Eric Hassell known to many as “Peace”, 45 years ago, that is, three years after Barbados became

an independent country. The company was established with the

emphasis on providing service to the several inter-island schooners and motor vesselstransporting cargo and passengers throughout the Caribbean at that time.

It has subsequently expanded its offerings and today, Eric Hassell & Son Ltd is a leadingshipping agency, stevedore contractor andinternational freight forwarder which prides itself on providing efficient and reliable services to ship owners, charterers, shippers and receivers alike.

The company offers a diverse range of maritime

services handling any marine activity regardless of the type, value or the size of the cargo.

Eric Hassell & Son Ltd is a leading authenticfamily-owned Barbadian company established in the early post-Independence period.

It is led by a third generation family memberErica Luke, managing director, who manages a dedicated and highly productive staff, one ofwhom, Pat Lewis, who has been employed by thecompany since its formation, is specially featuredin this year’s anniversary celebrations for her long and distinguished service to the company.

The main principles on which the company ofEric Hassell & Son Ltd was founded are integrity, team work, service excellence, and respect.

These principles continue to be applied today and will guide the company as it looks tothe future in which it will significantly further expand its range of offerings and services in themany varied and related aspects of shipping, a field in which the name Hassell has beensynonymous in the Caribbean and beyond for more than a century.

N 1992, Erica Luke, granddaughter ofCaptain Eric Hassell, had just finished herdegree in marketing

from Concordia Universityin Montreal and hadreturned to Barbados tofind a career. At the time, she never actually gavethought to joining up withthe family business.

However, when the needarose in Eric Hassell & SonLtd. Luke joined thelongstanding team.

“The impetus for me tojoin the company wasacquiring the first containershipping line. Mygrandfather was very proudwhen they came to him andasked him to representthem. That was in ’92 andhe would have been 77years old but still cominginto the office every day. Heused to come in at 5:30 inthe morning and leave atnoon,” she said.

Continuing, Lukerecalled: “I had just finishedmy degree in marketing andcame back to Barbados in’91 and had to earn my wayin the company, there is nonepotism here.

When Luke first joinedthe family company, shetook position in theMarketing Department andhad to absorb everything she could from anywhere she could.

Eventually becoming the director ofmarketing, Luke learned a lot about theother various aspects of the business, first under the guidance of hergrandfather and then her uncle FrankHassell, who had taken over thebusiness by then. When he retired asmanaging director in 2007, shesucceeded him.

Looking back on the history of EHS,Luke said: “From inception, we startedout as the agent for several inter-islandschooners. The biggest transition hasbeen the change from loose shipping tocontainerised shipping. In the ’70s, westarted to represent bulk carriers oflumber, grain, and steel. Many containerlines had started to come into Barbadosin the late ’70s but we didn’t actuallyenter the representation of container

lines until the early ’90s.”The safety and security of container

cargo is what attracts clients to thattype of shipping and EHS is known fortheir care and attentive duty to all thoseinvolved in the business.

improvements has been theintroduction of the Asycuda system.Which is a universal customs systemthat was implemented to speed up thecustoms clearance process through the

HE YEAR 1972 was the lastmanned moon landing todatewith Apollo XVII and thebeginning of the legacy of Janett

“Pat” Lewis and her four-decade journeywith Eric Hassell & Son Ltd.

It is rare, in today’s world, that oneapplies for a job and is instantly hiredbut that was the case with Lewis.

Coming onto the team as an accountsclerk, Lewis has watched the businesschange and morph into the leader that itis today.

“February 2, 2015, will be 43 years. Now, I’m the administrator. When I camehere to Eric Hassell, I was an accountsclerk. I had to do all the typing andthings like that. I was the first and onlylady here,” she said.

In those days, the staff complementwas about eight, including Captain EricHassell. “Back then a normal ruler wasour computer. The first computers wehad were so big that they filled a room, but the computers we have now are sosmall and cute,” Lewis said.

Working in shipping and dealing withall the ins and outs of the officeenvironment, especially in those earlydays, meant constant manual note takingand filing. “I was always busy. Everythingthat goes on in the office, I’m involvedin. I love my work,” she said.

Lewis, who now holds the post ofoffice administrator, worked withCaptain Eric Hassell, the founder;Geoffrey Hassell, his son; Frank Hassellhis brother, and Shirley Chaderton, hissister.

Now with Erica Luke, Hassell’sgranddaughter at the helm of thebusiness, Lewis feels she is a part of thefamily. “We always try to be efficient andcustomer wise. We grow together andit’s like a love company, we are the EricHassell family,” Lewis said.

From the days of manual entry inledgers and journals to the 1980s when

the office utilised one massive computer,to today’s quaint desktops and the easeafforded by the Internet, Lewis has gonethrough the moulding of the companyand looks back fondly on every bit of it.

This year, Lewis was honoured at theEric Hassell & Son Ltd 45th anniversarycelebration and Customer Appreciationceremony at Champers last Thursday.

The presenting of her award camewith uproarious applause. “I am due toretire next year. With God’s blessing,

I’ll retire in May. By then it will be 43years and four months. “I believe that ifyou got a job, you should love the job.And once you love your job, you’ll do itthe best way, you’ll work hard and it willhelp both you and the company. Youshould always come to work caring,” shesaid.

With warm recollections on the past,Lewis added: “I can say that the EricHassell management has always treatedme well and I appreciate everything thatthey have done for me during the years.I was awarded with many gifts.

“The 40th celebration was five yearsago and I was awarded then andpreviously at the 25th. They havetreated me very well. When I retire, I amgoing to miss them but there is a seasonfor everything.”

Message from Seaboard Marine presented byVice-president, Caribbean Division, StephenBell, during Eric Hassell & Son Limited’s 45thanniversary celebration At ChampersRestaurant on November 13, 2014.

EABOARD SALUTES Eric Hassell &Son for achieving this historicalmilestone. Forty-five years of business is quite anachievement and it is right and properfor us to gather here to celebrate thisachievement.

It would be ridiculous for me to stand here todayto speak to you about the details of thisachievement. Forty-five years ago, Eric Hassell &Son was established and has been a vital conduitlinking Barbados with the region and the widerworld. You know that story better than everyoneelse, however I would like to make mention of thefact that they are a founding member of theShipping Association of Barbados, and in 1992embraced containerised shipping by providingquality representation to a US-based shipping line.

That brings us to today, where we as a containerised shipping line are very pleased to have Eric Hassell & Son representing us in Barbados.

With this in mind, I would like to address, however, the leadership qualities and the spirit ofdetermination that have allowed this company toreach the 45-year milestone.

Let’s put this in context. Forty-five years ago, some of the nations of the British West Indies werestill in gestation. They were still British colonies, flying the Union Jack and singing in prayer “God

Company’s resilience ensures success

save our gracious Queen! “The beautiful country of Barbados was three years old,

Jamaica and Trinidad a mere seven years old. Collectively ourmiddle class and technical classes were underdeveloped or non-existent so the human and financial resources necessary todrive development were just not there. In fact, capital for newbusiness development was hard to obtain except for those whoalready had money to invest. It was therefore a very hostilebusiness environment. Yet, it was in that difficult situation thatCaptain Eric Hassell decided to establish this company.

It was a difficult environment to set up a business. And if youdid manage to set up a business, chances of it surviving in thatenvironment were slim.

It was in that period of underdevelopment, uncertainty and lackof opportunity that this company was established. Yet thiscompany survived as it was often said that Captain Hassell wasborn with salt in his veins.

The ’60s went quickly by only to usher in the decade of theterrible ’70s with its oil crises, IMF (International Monetary Fund)conditionalities, import restrictions, and a decline in exports. Itwas an extreme environment for doing business and manycompanies failed.

Yet this company survived. Then came the decade of the ’80swith its own set of debilitating problems -- currencydevaluations and high interest rates. Yet this companysurvived.

And all through the decade of the ’90s -- with our localcurrencies continuing to lose value against our majortrading partners, oil price increases, decline in localimports, and continuing fall off in export production – yetthis company survived.

We’re now in what has been described as the worsteconomic recession in modern times with Barbados goingthrough its own adjustments to this global crisis and thiscompany has not only survived, we are here todaycelebrating its 45th anniversary.

Ladies and gentlemen, we must see this anniversary inthe context of history. The fact that this company has comethrough severe business turbulence, decade after decade,to get to this point speaks volumes about the quality of itsleadership throughout the years. Starting with CaptainHassell, his son Geoffrey until his migration to NorthAmerica, and then Frank Hassell until his retirement in2007. Since that time in 2007, it has been under the steadyhands and watch of his granddaughter Erica Luke.

There is clearly a business culture here that is tenacious, resilient, creative, aggressive, innovative and responsive. How else could it have survived? In fact, not only has itsurvived, it has grown in size and stature, it has expandedits services and capabilities and it has grown moredependable and efficient over the years.

Seaboard Marine identifies with such a business culture.Indeed these are the characteristics that drive ourcompany. And, that is why I am here to participate in thisevent -- identify with and to celebrate with as well as tosalute a true Caribbean company on achieving thismilestone. With this in mind I look forward to theircontinued growth and success.

LUE WATERS SHIPPING LTD arose from the desire for Eric Hassell & Son Ltdto continue forward with expansion. A full-service shipping agent, Blue Waters Shipping arose from

an interesting necessity.“We proudly gained representation of

“Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in 2012.MSC is the second largest carrier in the world and

they wanted us to represent them. They operate over400 ships. So we created a separate and distinct teamto cater to them,” said Erica Luke.

With two ships a month from MSC and a smallfreight forwarding line out of Germany called SACOshipping which transports smaller LCL (less thancontainer load), Blue Waters Shipping may be smallbut it has a line of very experienced leadership in the

shipping industry.“The name Blue Waters came up because my

grandparents used to live at Blue Waters, Rockley, and I just wanted some connection with them,” said Luke.“There are just three employees that run the company. It’s small, it’s neat, and we are optimistic about the future growth of the company.”

The services provided by Blue Waters Shippingare as follows:

• Stevedoring• Liner representation• Tramp representation• Special project cargoes• Warehousing services• Research vessel representation• Logistics

HEN Captain Eric Hassell startedhis company, it was at the requestof ships’ captains that wanted hisexpertise to manage their businessand liaise in a certain manner with everything their trade

would require.Currently, the Eric Hassell & Son Ltd (EHS)

customer service team is comprised of threepeople. Diana Walcott, Donna Archer and Shannon Oliver.

“I’ve been here for 12 years. It’s a greatcompany to work with. My team is really greatand I truly enjoy working with everyone here.Eric Hassell has always been family-oriented.Each department works together. Whenever a ship comes, there’s something that involvesevery department so you can’t not have thatunity,” said Walcott, customer service officerat EHS.

“Customer service in a shipping companymostly entails documentation. That ispreparation of documents for the clearance ofcargo from the Bridgetown Port or from theAirport because we do a little business with theairport as well,” she said.

“Personalised service sets us apart from thecompetition. It’s not just the Customer ServiceDepartment that gives customer service, everydepartment does. If someone in one departmentisn’t there, someone else is always willing toassist or try to get that information for you. Forevery customer at the end of the day or end of acall, we want them to feel as though they havebeen served,” Walcott added.

Coming in February of 2015, the BarbadosCustoms Department will be, yet again, upgradingthe system that increases the ease of operationfrom every aspect of the business so as to betterserve its clients and lubricate the work that isdone in cooperation with Port, Customs, andeveryone involved in the shipping service.

“I am certain that 90 per cent of businesses inBarbados are aware of Eric Hassell. We’re very

well known and that’s because people have verygood experiences with us. Our management isvery forward-thinking. What we had with Frank,we have with Erica. The company is very open to suggestion and is always looking for new avenues.

Many of these vessels useBarbados as their favoured Port of call forchanging crew or to collect provisions.Barbados is ideally suited for theseoperations because of the efficiency thatcan be achieved with the co-operation ofthe Barbados Port Authority andregularity of flights arriving and departingthe airport.

With its ongoing relationship with theTexas A&M University Ocean DrillingProgramme, EHS has gained tremendousexpertise in dealing with these uniquevessel calls.

Tramp Cargo FleetThese tramp cargo ships are all small

fleets under private ownership. In mostcases, they have been providing adedicated service to the EasternCaribbean for decades. They can carry amaximum of 60-70 tons.

Tramp ships are normally generalisedas having no advertised sailing scheduleand flexible ship design to carry severaltypes of general cargo. However, mostexporters have grown so accustomed tousing a particular vessel on a specific daythat it is correct to say that these vesselshave a fixed sailing schedule.

At times of low economic activity, theschedule may change based oninducement, however, the volumes arequite steady year-round.

These vessel owners are ferventlystriving to comply with flag andclassification requirements worldwide.EHS assists these tramp ship owners inproviding a number of services for theiroperations consisting of crewing, purchasing, operations, and maintenance.

These vessels maintain a regularschedule between the Caribbean Islands:
