Wynder, M.D., founding editor of Preventive Medicine and its Editor- in-Chief for 27 years, died on July 14, 1999. Dr Wynder guided the journal from a small start-up to a standard in the discipline, from being an idea to an IDEAL member as part of Academic Press’ online journal library. Ernst L. Wynder was born in Herford, Germany. His family came to the United States in 1938, and he served in the U.S. Army intelligence from 1943 to 1945. He received his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, Mis- souri, in 1950. While he made contributions in many areas of preventive medi- cine, he was particularly well known for his vision and his work in tobacco control, nutrition, and other aspects of cancer research and in promoting the health of children. His 1950 article ‘‘Tobacco Smoking as a Possible Etiologic Factor of Bronchiogenic Carcinoma,’’ co-authored with Dr. Evarts A. Graham, was hailed as a landmark article, reprinted as a JAMA classic article in 1985, and also appeared as a landmark article in J NIH Res in 1992. He established the American Health Foundation as an independent disease prevention center in 1969. The Foundation became known nationally and inter- nationally as one of the National Cancer Institute-designated laboratory cancer centers. Dr. Wynder served as its President and Chief Executive Officer from 1969 through 1999. Nationally and internationally, numerous awards and hon- orary degrees represent the public and peer testament to his devotion and contributions. All of us in the disciplines of preventive medicine are indebted to Ernst Wynder for his contributions and vision. Each issue of Preventive Medicine published, and particularly this one, will be a tribute to his vision.
