Erris – alive in the West BEN MURNANE discovers a western paradise rich in culture, adventure and natural beauty ADVERTISING FEATURE Y ou may be sur- prised by what you find in the little corners of Ireland. Travel west along the glorious Atlantic coastline of north Mayo and you come to beautiful Belmullet, the gateway to Erris. Here, plummeting sea cliffs and imposing head- lands sit beside white, sandy beaches; looming mountains rise from miles of undisturbed wilderness. Erris is a Gaeltacht area and former barony; its var- ied terrain includes the old- est known field system in the world, the Céide Fields. The remains of this Neolithic landscape, walls, houses, and tombs are pre- served beneath a blanket of peat and extend over several square miles. The area is also rich in archaeology with 301 national monuments in- cluding Annagh Head and the Inishkea islands and Inis Glora. Aside from a sense of mythic history, and the occasional warm tradition- al pub, there is nothing between you and nature in Erris – making it attractive to both thrill-seekers and Almost any species of fish inhabiting the waters around Ireland can be caught here – over 40 vari- eties. Shore fishing is partic- ularly good all round the area, both on the Atlantic coast and inner coastline of Blacksod and Broadhaven Bays. Off the coast lie the islands of Inis Glora, Inishkea North and South, and Dubh Oiléan Mór, on all of which monasteries flourished in Early Christian times. The mythical Children of Lir, doomed to wander the waters of Ireland for 900 years as enchanted swans, spent their last 300 at Inis Glora before regaining human form and withering to dust. The Inishkeas are internationally important with respect to birdlife – half the Irish wintering pop- ulation of Barnacle Geese make their home here. Hill walking is another joy in Erris; trek into Ballycroy National Park, an astonishing 11,000 hectares of blanket bog and moun- tainous terrain, covering a vast uninhabited and unspoilt wilderness domi- nated by the Nephin Beg mountain range. UISCE is an activity cen- tre where water sports and learning Irish are com- bined, located adjacent to the majestic blue flag beach of Elly Bay, perfect for wind- surfing, sailing and canoe- ing. Students get a new per- spective on the language, learning through adventure activities; they return speaking Irish naturally and with a Level 1 competency, a nationally recognised quali- fication, in various water sports. UISCE can organise group events or tailor-made school trips; this is also a beautiful location for a pri- vate function. For the culturally inclin- ed, Áras Inis Gluaire in Belmullet is an exciting new arts centre with a wide pro- gramme of events, from the weekly Ceoltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Session to film screenings, concerts, exhibi- tions and workshops for children. The Tír Sáile Sculpture Trail, along the north and northwest coast of Mayo, is the largest pub- lic arts project undertaken in Ireland, with 14 sculp- tures by international sculp- tors, supplemented by an exhibition site. Every summer, Erris comes alive with a packed festival programme for the community and visitors alike – and this year is no exception. Féile Iorras, the Inter- national Folk Arts Festival, will take place from July 17th to 26th. Now in its fourteenth year, the festival works to promote integra- tion and understanding between the people of Erris and various communities throughout the world, host- ing both local and interna- tional indigenous art. This year’s programme includes contemporary dance, visual arts workshops, traditional and roots music, Welsh folk singing, Indian classical music, photography work- shops, theatre, poetry, and a celebration of the area’s lighthouses, along with per- formers from China, Gambia, Austria and England, and much more. The famous Geesala Festival, which started as a reunion festival for emi- grants and has links with Synge’s Playboy of the Western World, will take place from August 9th to 16th, and include show jumping, go karting, a dog show, dog racing, and the annual highlight – horse racing on Doolough Beach. The Belmullet Gala Arts Festival, from August 13th to 18th, also promises an exciting line-up this year, with activities for all ages.
