+Wright 5rothers S_ymposium • Fallowing the Footsteps of the Wright 5rothers:

Their Sites and Stories On December 17, 2003, the world will mark the 1 OOth anniversary of powered flight.

This achievement was truly a defining moment of.the 20th Century.

Following the Footsteps of the Wright Brothers: Their Sites and Stories

is a one-day symposium at Wright State University on September 28, 2001.

This symposium retraces the "footsteps" of the Wrights and examines

the role that various sites

- from Dayton, Ohio, to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, to Europe -

played in the lives of these aviation pioneers.

The Wright Brothers Symposium is designed to bring together scholars, students, ._m:..111.Isiasts;n rmrriahs, ana educators to discuss their research and share their insights

into the actual sites of significance to Wilbur and Orville Wright and the

invention of powered flight.

Symposium activities include: September 27 - Opening reception at Carillon Historical Park.

September 28 - Opening plenary session with NASA Historian Roger Launius; concurrent sessions on a variety of topics related to the sites and stories of the

Wright Brothers; lunchtime presentation by National Air and Space Museum

Senior Curator Tom Crouch; and a reception in Special Collections and Archives

in the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library, where attendees will view an exhibit of

original materials from the Wright Brothers Collection and a full-size replica of the

1903 Flyer in the library atrium.

September 29 - Attendees can visit historic aviation sites in the Dayton area.

A guided bus tour is available through pre-registration.

Registrations will be accepted through September 14, 2001.

Registration fees: $10.00 Opening reception at Carillon Historical Park

$35.00 Symposium including lunch, breaks, concurrent sessions, and materials

$20.00 Guided bus tour of Dayton's aviation history sites

Saturday. September 29. 2001 8:00 a.m. - 1 :00 p.m. Guided bus tour of aviation history sites throughout Dayton. Includes lunch at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Officer's Club and visits to Carillon Historical Park, Wright Brothers Memorial, Huffinan Prairie, and the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. Maps will be provided at the symposium for people who prefer to visit the aviation history sites on their own.
