Plagiarism & Collusion
Plagiarism:
• the use of the ideas, words or findings of others without acknowledging them as such
Collusion:
• pieces of work submitted by two or more students as their own work but which are essentially the same or very similar.
Plagiarism & Collusion –
Consequences University Regulations state that it is
totally unacceptable for students to plagiarise or collude in their written work. Anyone who does so will be subject to strict University procedures and penalties which for year 1 are as follows:
• The student will receive a mark of 0% for the piece of work. If the return of a mark of 0% for the piece of work results in a student failing the module, then any reassessment shall be limited to a maximum mark of 40%.
Avoiding Plagiarism & Collusion
Use proper referencing for text.
Example of reference citation in text:• The term extensional fault is preferred to the
more commonly used normal fault because it refers to the effect of the fault (i.e. it extends the strata). Extensional faults may be planar or listric (McClay, 1987).
Example of full reference in Bibliography or Reference List• McClay, K. 1987. The Mapping Of Geological
Structures. Open University Press. 162pp.
