Sharm el-Sheikh - «Sharm» for short - is one of the fastest developing holiday resorts in Egypt. What was a sleepy fishing village less than two decades ago, is now a buzzing tourist destination with some 35,000 inhabitants. Its rocky mountains, beautiful deep-blue sea and its breath-taking desert landscape make it a popular sight for globetrotters from across the world.

Situated alongside the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm is an area of beaches and resorts stretching some 30 kilometres, with Naama Bay forming the main tourist centre.

The BaysSharm has become one of the top global destinations for snorkelers and divers thanks to its beautiful and diverse sea life, and its sandy beaches have become very popular with holidaymakers.

Naama Bay is by far the most popular of them, and its long, sandy beach is a favourite among swimmers and sun bathers. It is buzzing with life thanks to its many restaurants and shops. Come here to try out the Bungee catapult or take up horse riding sessions.

If you prefer it more quiet, spend a day at Nabq Bay, which is situated outside of the main tourist area, or spend a day on Sharks’ Bay, about a 20 minute taxi ride from Naama Bay.

Ras Um Sid, located west of Naama, is great for snorkelling. Situated about five minutes’ drive from Sharm, it is famous for its stunning coral reefs and boasts an impressive clifi.

If you are interested in diving, Sharm El-Maya should be your point of reference. The bay, located near Sharm’s Old Town area, is home to a number of diving centres that will show you the best waters in Sharm. When picking a divingschool, however, make sure the school has been accredited by a professional diving association.

DO & SEEEven if you do not want to spend your entire holiday on stunning Red Sea beaches, there are still plenty of reasons to come here. Sharm gives you a taste of real Egyptian life and culture, and serves as a base to visit some of the historic sites that surround it. Its crystal-clear water and unique sea life have also made Sharm one of the finest diving spots in the world.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin paid Egypt a short visit last month. It was the first visit for the Russian president to Egypt in ten years, a visit that has also been long-awaited by the Egyptians.

The Russia President Putin was warmly met and welcomed by his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the Cairo International Airport.

Despite the poor weather conditions, Cairo streets were decorated with the Russian President’s portraits and Russian flags in the major roads and bridges in the Egyptian capital in celebration of the occasion.

The visit comes in return to the two previous visits which the Egyptian president El-Sisi had paid

to Russia in the past two years; first as a defence minister and then after taking in office in 2014.

Egyptians were keen to line up on the roads to welcome the arrival of the Russian president. The two presidents then headed to the Cairo Opera House where they went

on a tour and attended a special screening on the history of Egyptian-Russian relations .They had dinner at the Cairo Tower which is located in the same area.

During the dinner, the Russian president Vladimir Putin presented a gift to the president of Egypt: an assault rifle. The rifle, a klashinkov, was identified as an AK-47, according to the state-run Russia Today’s Arabic website.

Bilateral talks between Vladimir Putin and the Egyptian president Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi were followed by negotiations in expanded format with the participation of the two nations’ delegations.

The Russian President’s official visit to Egypt

Russia’s Putin in Cairo

20

Page 21: Escape to Sharm

resulted in the signing of a number of documents on bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy and investment, witnessed by the two leaders.

After the signing ceremony, Vladimir Putin and Abdel Fattah El-Sisi made statements for the press in a joint press conference held at the presidential palace ‘Al-Kubba’ where the two leaders were welcomed to the presidential palace by children signing “Sisi, Sisi, Putin, Putin, Long Live Egypt.”

The Russian President began by thanking President El-Sisi for his invitation and the residents of Cairo for their very warm, friendly reception that all the members of the Russian delegation and himself had experienced. “We all saw your friendly attitude to Russia”. He said.

“My previous visit to Cairo was ten years ago, and my colleagues and I are very happy to find ourselves once again in the hospitable land of Egypt.

“Despite all the problems Egypt had to overcome in the past years, in our bilateral relations we have managed not only to avoid a slow-down, but even reached new heights in our cooperation.

“Today we had very constructive and substantive negotiations with the President; we continued the meaningful exchange on the entire range of Russian-Egyptian relations and key regional and international matters, which we began in Sochi last year.

“That was Mr President’s working visit. I hope he will accept my invitation and come to Moscow on an official visit so we could continue our contacts that, in my opinion, are developing positively”, added the Russian President.

Putin also pointed out in his statement to giving priority attention to matters of economic cooperation in the bilateral talks. He noted that in 2014 mutual trade turnover grew by more than 80 percent. Among the key factors of that growth was the intensive development of the mutual cooperation in agriculture. The export of Russian wheat to Egypt doubled, as did the import to Russia of Egyptian agricultural produce.

The Russian President also referred to the cooperation in the power industry as ‘developing rapidly’. In 2014, Russia supplied to Egypt more than 1.4 million tons of its petroleum products. More than one sixth of all oil production in Egypt is arranged through Russia’s LUKOIL Company.

Putin also revealed that the talks also included the possible cooperation in nuclear power. “Here, if the final decision is made, we are talking not only about the construction of a nuclear power station. We are discussing the creation of a new industry in Egypt – the nuclear power industry, which involves the construction of a nuclear power station, personnel

21

Page 22: Escape to Sharm

training, promotion of science and a whole range of measures that will make it possible to create a new industry in Egypt”. He explained.

Cooperation between the two countries Russia and Egypt in space exploration and the joint use of the GLONASS Russian navigation satellite system was also seen by the Russian president as great prospects.

The Russian president confirmed that efforts will focus on promoting an entire range of investment projects, primarily in such areas as transport infrastructure, engineering and chemical industry.

“The instate commission that has resumed its work will be handling all these matters. I would also like to stress the significance of the Memorandum on attracting investment and the Agreement on joint investment projects that were signed during this visit”, the Russian president said.

Putin also declared that it has been agreed in the talks to expand opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses. Over 400 companies with Russian capital have already been registered and are operating in Egypt. “In this connection, we expect that the Russian-Egyptian Business Council that also resumed its work last year will work actively and with initiative”.

Tourism, education and science were other

key issues that were considered by the Russian President. “We consider the humanitarian sphere an important component of our cooperation, namely expanding and promoting tourist, educational

and scientific exchange. The Egyptian Russian University continues its successful operation. The number of Russian tourists in Egypt grows every year”.

In 2014, a record number of Russians visited various Egyptian resorts – over three million. “This is a 50 percent more than in 2013. This, without a doubt, is the result of political stabilisation achieved by President El-Sisi”. The Russian president said. “We know that tourists do not choose dangerous or risky places to spend their holidays – they choose where it’s safe and calm”. He added.

In his statement, the Russian president said that the talks had also tackled detailed discussion of the situation in the Middle East and the world at large. We agreed to intensify our anti-terrorist efforts.

Finally, Putin said that Russia intended to remain Egypt’s reliable partner and friend. “I am certain that this visit will give a good impetus to the development of our relations”. The Russian President concluded.

and others are anticipated to bring back and reinstate fiscal stability, motivate growth, invite investment and eventually develop the Egyptian people’s social welfare.

The EEDC will also witness the participation of young Egyptians, SMEs and entrepreneurs, an occasion and a platform to share ideas and intermingle with conference delegates. At the EEDC, new dialogues, chances, communication and thoughts about the future of Egyptian prosperity will be raised and fostered among those young people.

Egyptians are looking forward to this month’s EEDC just as much as the Head of the State President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is proud of hosting the Conference in the city of peace, Sharm El-Sheikh. For Egyptians, the EEDC is the kick off for a new vision and revelation for Egypt’s economy and a gateway that would offer opportunities to local, regional and international investors.

Amidst highly- reputed international figures of the fields of business, finance and politics, the conference is meant to prove to the world’s investors why they can restore their confidence in a politically-stable Egypt, ready to speed up its economic growth.

Because of the EEDC, Sharm El-Sheikh Hotels’ occupancy is expected to reach its highest peak with an estimated increase

This month, the world’s attention will focus on the striking city of Sharm El-Sheikh which is set to host the Egypt Economic Development Conference (EDDC) during the period from 13 to15 March.

This landmark conference will showcase the progress of Egypt’s economic and business reforms and launch a four-year economic development and investment programme that will put the economy on a route towards comprehensive and maintainable growth.

The event is considered by Egypt’s Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab as a catalyst and promoter for Egypt’s economic development and an opportunity for international political and business leaders, as well as investors and institutions, to take part in key development enterprises and creativities through a wide range of sectors.

The two-day conference will be a major breakthrough in the application and enactment of this striving growth program from which Egypt seeks to attract billions of dollars in foreign investment over the four-year period.

The world’s leading business and political figures are expected to be drawn to the conference, which will highpoint the extensive reforms that has already been applied by the Egyptian government recently like subsidy reforms. These reforms

around the globe, from business and politics will be unprecedented in the recent history of Egypt. So is the speed of changes that the government is making.

Networking opportunities: The conference has been deliberately structured to allow delegates to mingle freely and discuss substantive matters in a discreet setting; a significant networking opportunity. There will be special times set aside for one-to-one meetings with the President and his Ministers.

Be the first to know: The conference is a unique opportunity to hear first-hand of the economic vision and sector plans that the government has prepared to drive investment and growth, all with strong private sector participation. The overall objective is to enhance the prosperity of the people of Egypt.

First mover advantage: Participants can “get in on the ground floor” in a country that is making sweeping changes to its economic structure. There are massive investment opportunities stemming from Egypt’s sheer size, population growth, natural resources and unique location.

Support Egypt for the benefit of all: Last, but not least, it is important to support Egypt at this critical juncture and as it takes strides to advance its economy. Egypt wants to regain its long standing position as a political, economic and cultural center of stability the region. Benefiting not just Egypt’s own economy and society, but that of the whole region.

in March up to 80% due to the inflow of participants taking part in the EEDC. Egyptian officials hope the EEDC will serve in attracting more tourists to Egypt and promoting tourism in 2015.

Hotel capacity in South Sinai is 162,000 rooms, 40% of which are in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh. Egypt’s income from tourism during 2014 totaled $ 7.5bn, a $1.6bn increase compared to 2013.

BG Egypt today announced the signing of a tie-in agreement with BP Egypt and RWE DEA that will enable the increase of the supply of energy to the Egyptian domestic network through the utilization of BG Egypt’s comprehensive infrastructure. Libra and Taurus fields, located largely within BP/RWE Dea’s North Alexandria Concession, offshore the Nile Delta, will be connected to BG Egypt and partner PETRONAS West Delta Deep Marine (WDDM) offshore infrastructure. Gas from Libra-Taurus will be processed at the BG Egypt-operated WDDM onshore facilities, and is expected to start producing in mid-2017 at rates of around 600 mmscfd. A portion of the Libra field (the P80 channel) straddles the boundary between the North Alexandria and the WDDM concessions. Production from this area will be regulated under a unitisation agreement that was also signed today.Commenting on the agreements, BG Egypt President Arshad Sufi said: “BG Egypt is committed to working closely with the Government of Egypt and our partners to enable the increase of gas supply into the country, a reflection of our deep understanding of the country’s need for energy. These agreements will enable the development and delivery of additional gas volumes to Egypt’s domestic gas market, through the utilization of BG Egypt’s and our partners’ onshore and offshore infrastructure.”A separate agreement was signed by BG Egypt with BP and RWE Dea, whereby the right of use of the Rosetta onshore facilities will effectively be transferred from BG Egypt/Edison to BP/RWE Dea as of mid-2016. BP plans to build new production facilities, integrating the existing Rosetta treatment plant with new HPHT installations, to process gas from their Giza, Fayoum and Raven fields from 2018, feeding the country’s domestic network. BG Egypt and Edison will continue to hold rights to the Rosetta Concession, and may process future gas through the WDDM facilities.- ends-Notes:BG Egypt is a subsidiary of BG Group, one of the

principal foreign investors in Egypt. It is a leading player in the development of the local natural gas industry with investments spanning the gas chain from exploration through development and production to LNG. The company is one of the largest producers of natural gas in Egypt. For more information, visit www.bg-group.com The West Delta Deep Marine Concession was awarded to BG Egypt in 1995. The Scarab and Saffron fields were brought on-stream in March 2003 delivering gas to the domestic market. Subsequently, the Simian, Sienna and Sapphire fields entered production. Completed in February 2008, WDDM Phase 4 brought into development seven additional deepwater wells in the Scarab/Saffron and Simian subsea fields. Phase 5, an onshore booster compression project, came onstream in May 2009, while Sequoia, a unique project representing Phase 6 of the development of WDDM and Phase 4 of the development of BG Egypt’s other Concession, Rosetta, came onstream in August 2009, bringing six additional wells, three on each Concession. Gas from Phase 8a, a deepwater development project and an extension of the existing deepwater subsea infrastructure comprising nine subsea wells entered operations in October 2011, while gas from Phase 8b came on stream on in June 2012. First gas from Phase 9a was delivered in July 2014. This Phase comprises 9 wells, and includes the enhancement of the country’s gas infrastructure with an upgraded well control system enabling it to bring new wells on in the complex West Delta Deep Marine concession while maintaining supply from existing wells. To date, eight of the Phase 9a wells have come on stream, while the remaining well will come on stream during 2015.BG Egypt is the operator of the Concession and holds a 50 per cent working interest. PETRONAS holds the remaining 50 per cent. Burullus Gas Company S.A.E a Joint Operating Company of EGPC, BG Egypt, and PETRONAS conducts operations on behalf of the WDDM partners.

Great DivesPharaoh’s (or Farun) Island – Situated in the northern reaches of the Gulf of Aqaba, this area is noted for fascinating endemic marine life – frogfish, which may be one of the oddest fish. Once a Phoenician port, this small island lies a mere 250 metres/275 yards off shore and a restored castle overlooks the relatively uncrowded dive sites. Small pinnacles and walls dropping to 25 metres/80 feet feature healthy coral, schools of bream and batfish and the ubiquitous moray eels. It’s a great place for topside exploration and snorkeling too.Giftun Island – This marine reserve with a modest entry fee has a host of dive sites characterized by steep drop offs, fabulous coral reefs and the possibility of encounters with barracuda, tuna and even bigger pelagic species. That›s if you can tear your eyes away from the gorgonians and marine life that populate the caverns and

Egypt and the Red Sea

ledges. The frequently strong currents often dictate drift dives. The protection coming with marine reserve status really pays off here with abundant marine life and great diving.Ras Mohamed National Park – The first Egyptian national park is still one of the best. It is about 20 kilometres/12 miles

south of Sharm el Sheik at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula where the Gulf of Aqaba meets the Gulf of Suez. Due to the mixing of these waters, the area hosts healthy coral reefs and myriad reef and pelagic fish species. This protected area can be accessed by a day trip or liveaboard dive boat. At two of the featured dive sites, Shark and Yolanda reefs, currents are often significant which makes drift dives common.Seven Pillars – Close to Safaga in Soma Bay, seven coral pillars nearly rise to the surface from about 14 metres/45 feet of depth. Many reef fish, including Napoleon wrasse, puffer fish and lionfish,

Egypt, one of the world’s oldest civilizations, bears testament to some of mankind’s earliest triumphs. The pyramids of Cairo are one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the

nearby Museum of Egyptian Antiquities houses the legendary treasures of Tutankhamen. But Egypt is much more than ancient monuments and pyramids. It’s a cruise down the Nile, a luxury hotel and hot nightlife, it’s a vast invigorating desert and, especially for scuba divers, it’s the Red Sea. Just beyond where the cool, azure waters lap the desert shores, lie beautiful reefs, millions of fish, fantastic visibility, sheltered reefs, towers, pinnacles, walls, coral gardens and wrecks. They all send a siren call to scuba divers and mark the Red Sea as a world-class scuba diving destination. No matter how impressive the above-water attractions, the real jewel in the Egyptian crown has to be the simply staggering diving in the Red Sea.

call the area home. It’s also a well-known night diving spot.Straits of Tiran – Situated at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, the straits form a natural constriction and consequently the diving is spectacular. Divers privileged to have visited the reefs here (Jackson, Gordon and Woodhouse among many others) speak their names in respectful whispers. Washed by strong currents, these reefs are favorite haunts for marauding jacks, barracuda and sharks that prowl the reef edges on the lookout for their unwary, or injured, smaller cousins. Enormous moray eels slip through the coral heads and crevices, which teem with anthias and myriad other reef dwellers.Want to know more? Visit ScubaEarth® for further information on thousands of dive sites, marine species, destination essentials and more.Dive SummaryVisibility – Usually clear, visibility can range from 15170- metres/50230- feetWater Temperature – Depending on the season, water temperature ranges from 2130°-C/7086°-F. Weather – Egypt’s climate is hot and dry, however, in the winter the north is quite cool.

The air temperature ranges from 2140°-C/70-104°F. Diving is always good, year round.Featured Creatures – The Red Sea offers an amazing diversity of fish on nearly every dive. Thousands of anthias sweeping across a coral wall will compete with coral groupers, wrasse, blue spotted rays, butterfly fish and angelfish for your attention. But, don’t get too caught up in the action – you might just miss that majestic whale shark gently cruising by.Recommended Training – Take the PADI Deep Diver and

PADI Drift Diver courses for diving the fabulous walls. The PADI Digital Underwater Photographer course is also great to record your adventure.Travel InfoLanguage – Arabic, but given the importance of tourism, you’ll hear English, Russian, German, French, Italian, Polish, Czech and more spoken. SharmCycle launched its newest Initiative of 1000 Salam, one thousand peace shouts, intended to initially offer warm welcome to Guests of Economical Conference taking place in Sharm Elsheikh 1317- March 2015, as it means in local Egyptian Language, very warm and loving welcome, it is also intended as “Salam” means Peace, hinting that you shall come in peace and leave in peace during your stay at “Madinat Al Salam” Peace City of Sharm Elsheikh. This Initiative intended to have large number of Cyclists wearing printed T-Shirts with the Initiative’s logos ride bicycles in a beautiful eye-catching parade during the conference and send clear message of safety and security to the world.

Although it is only a few months old, yet it has rapidly spread all over Sharm Elsheikh to become the daily discussion of most households and business with its increasing popularity scoring over 30,000 fans to its Facebook Page and over

2 Million Page Reach from all over the world. The idea was developed by its founder, Ehab Elsayed who has lived most of his life in the United States of America enjoying the Sunny Florida Beaches of Miami and inspired by the courageous initiative of Egyptian President, Abdelfattah Elsisi, as he stated and motivated by urgent need to restore the beauty of Sharm Elsheikh’s rare coral reefs.

SharmCycle hosted its first Street Bicycle Ride on 7 November 2015 with tens of male and female participants of all ages after weeks of panning and obtaining proper governmental authorizations as the journey had begun to convince government officials of the importance of SharmCycle Green Tourism Initiative which aims to accomplish great missions as it is goes beyond simple sports activities.

The challenge was to convince government, local business, residents, and tourists of the great impact cycling would have on Sharm Elsheikh and the

SharmCycle is Sharm Elsheikh’sHottest New Addiction!

48

Page 49: Escape to Sharm

49

urgency of doing so, but since no government or private funding was offered, I had to think quickly, Ehab said… I made hundreds of calls and visits to different government officials with determination to obtain approvals until I succeeded after assuring them that I will self-fund the initiative and do not need government funding. Next step was to rally support of local business, which did not take long due to the long established credibility I had with them, and I was offered a facility to group cyclists at Ghibli Raceway, a World Class Carting Facility providing race track that we built on it our Cycling / Carting Challenges, a whole new concept to sports allowing us to reward those who excel in Cycling with adrenaline charged speed cart racing and offer valuable prizes. We also received support from Aqua Natural Water, a true Egyptian Elite producer of drinking water who provided weekly supply of water for our cyclists. We did also receive support from many other local and national business providing valuable prizes and logistical support.

In the early stages of SharmCycle Green Tourism Initiative planning, I recognized that we need to be visible and make a lasting first impression. In planning the first ride, I made sure I print branded T-Shirts to distribute to all cyclists at no charge, which was the biggest cost involved, but surely paid off later on as we hit the road for the first time with a large number of cyclists cruising the main road in Sharm Elsheikh escorted by Police Motorcycles and met with cheers

and waves of everyone we passed by as they have never seen something like this before in the City and sure enough they had made note of the name printed on all the T-Shirts worn by cyclists and inquired about it.

To date, SharmCycle has hosted twelve consecutive Street Rides, four Cycling Competitions, and many other Cycling Events in Sharm Elsheikh with participation of hundreds of Public Figures, Government Officials, Famous Signers, Artists, Journalists, Local Politicians, and Foreign Diplomats and Tourists and thus has built worldwide loyal fan base as it remained committed to its cause and continued to be self-funded,

but more importantly to the great social role it plays in community building. SharmCycle’s greatest fans have become local school kids and youth groups visiting from other cities who have become addicted to SharmCycle, surprisingly with approvals and encouragement of their parents, unlike any other activities, as they stated. This is clearly due to the highest ethical and professional practice it upholds and to the manners and discipline their kids learn at these cycling challenges in addition to the great prizes these kids win. At SharmCycle, we raise a new generation of future leaders, Ehab said, not only that we teach those skills to improve their behaviors, but we also put them in charge and assign them leading organizational roles exposing them to real life experience, not to mention that we keep them busy with sports and away from drugs and extremism.

A total of 464 athletes from 38 countries competed. The opening ceremony was attended by a number of

officials, including Minister of Youth and Sports Khaled Abdel-Aziz, South Sinai Governor Khaled Fouda, Suez Governor Al-Arabi Al-Sarou, head of the Arab Olympic Committee Prince Talal Bin Bandar, and dean of the Arab Academy for Science and Technology Ismail Farouk,

Hisham Lofti, head of Al-Ahram Advertising Agency, said it was an honour for Al-Ahram Organisation to be sponsoring such an important sport event. “It is the first time for us to approach karate as a sport but we discovered that it is wide spread in Egypt and Egypt is one of the top countries in the sport so we wish to sponsor their upcoming events and give a helping hand to all sports as we are well experienced in sponsoring international sports events and championships.”

Mohieddin Ahmed, vice president of the Egyptian Karate Federation and head of the organising committee added, “It was a great chance for all Egyptians that Sharm El-Sheikh was chosen to host this international event that is held eight times a year. It’s the first time for

the championship to be held in an Arab country so it’s an honour that Egypt got to host it.”

Ahmed said the Egyptian Karate Federation (EKF) made a presentation in 2013 in the Karate World Congress that was held in Germany alongside the World Championship.

“I said since we have world champions we should host one of the competitions of the Karate Premier League.”

“We were also honoured because we are on top of the world, ranked No 1 in the world rankings in the

youth and under 21 cadets. In the seniors we are fourth,” Ayman Abdel-Hamid, EKF president, said. “A number of delegates from the World Karate Federation paid several visits to Cairo and Sharm El-Sheikh to ensure that they were right in their decision, especially after the instabilities and terrorist attacks in Sinai but they were very satisfied with the preparation for the event.”

“I am very happy for Egypt,” Javier Mantilla, chairman of the Pan-American Federation (PKF), and a member of the World KF referees committee, said. “They (Egyptians) are a big country in karate. They are progressing very quickly and this is attributed to their being good listeners and they are working well and spending well on the athletes. They have a number of world champions and I am invited to Egypt to train them on a yearly basis. All of this adds to their experience. I am sure that very soon they will be on top of the world.”

At the World Congress held in Bremen alongside the

World Championship, Egypt won the bid to host the World Junior, Cadets and Under 21 Championship in 2017 in Cairo.
