Eskom Business Investment Competition 2016

Our goal when we established the Eskom Business Investment Competition in 2008 was to spark a lot of activity in the small business environment and stimulate economic development through the creation of jobs. We have seen many small enterprises over the years, some of whom have gone on to achieve great things.

As owners of small businesses, you have taken the most impor tant first steps and are working tirelessly to realise your dreams. As Eskom, we share your enthusiasm and want to see you succeed so you can change not only your life but those of people in your community as well.

While we have made some progress in advancing the small business industry, a lot still needs to be done. Economic development can never be truly realised until a majority of South Africans get economically active and contribute to growing the economy. And that is where you, as business owners come in - you help facilitate that change towards a better future. The Eskom Business Investment Competition is simply one small way that Eskom is contributing to the kind of stimulation that our economy so badly needs. As you would’ve seen by now, being an entrepreneur is not easy. Your path is filled with many different challenges and sometimes giving up seems to be the best option. For

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the ninth annual Eskom Business Investment Competition Awards.

having sustained your business for more than two years, you have proven to yourself that you have the courage and determination to go the distance and be successful. You have triumphed, overcome obstacles and will continue to do so as you seize all oppor tunities to take your business to the next level.

We are here to recognise you for all your hard work and to remind you of the impor tant contribution you are making towards growing our economy. I hope that par ticipating in this competition has given you renewed energy to go back and take your business to higher levels. Cecil Ramonotsi

Entrepreneurship has been identif ied as one of the ingredients vital to South Africa’s economic growth. Sadly South Africa has one of lowest number of entrepreneurs among its population when compared to other developing countries. Research shows that small businesses contribute substantially to job creation in South Africa. However, entrepreneurship requires vision, tenacity and a commitment to make one’s dream a reality. Small business owners face insurmountable odds and have to rise above their circumstances, many strive against adversity to realise their dreams of generating an income for their families and employment in their local communities.

Now in its ninth year, the Eskom Business Investment Competition aims to recognise, reward and develop these brave small business owners as par t of the Eskom Development Foundation’s on-going CSI enterprise development programme.

The competition is open to small and medium sized black-owned enterprises in South Africa and aims to open up oppor tunities for growth and exposure to a

wider market. For this year, there is R1.3 million wor th of prizes up for grabs that the winners can use to take their companies to the next level.

As par t of their prizes, all f inalists have the oppor tunity to exhibit their businesses at the Small Business Expo from 8 to 10 September 2015 at the Ticketpro Dome in Nor thriding.

The three-day expo provides small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with a versatile marketing platform from which to build brand awareness, interact with potential customers and investors as well as to generate media coverage. Like the competition, the Small Business Expo, is dedicated to developing entrepreneurship in South Africa.
