    ________________________________________

Reading is really important for ESOL learners as it helps otherlanguage areas.

Try to read lots of different things. Pick up a newspaper and readabout something that interests you. Its a good idea to watch thenews on TV and then read about the same thing in a newspaper thiscan help you understend the general meaning. Borrow one of thelatest novels from the library something that really grabs yourinterest.

New / difficult words some strategies: Avoid looking up all the new words in the text you are reading.

This will save you time searching through the dictionary. Does the word look like other words you know? It might have a

    similar meaning.

Try to increase your reading speed. See how long it takes you to read100 words. Note the time and then read the same number morequickly the following week. You can improve the time it takes you toread by following this technique it really works.

Do Dont read daily translate every word read for pleasure read too slowly

Have you visited your local shopping centre recently and noticed a

new retailer amongst the shops there? Dave Pringle reports on thenew book superstores opening around the UK over 35 in the last12 months. He asks why this is happening. What is attractingpeople to these kinds of shops?

Ozgur Durson, a regular shopper in his local book superstore, saidIts not really the size of these stores that is important to me, or

the latest books its the wonderful caf where I can relax and havea look at my favourite magazines.

However, shopping in these new book superstores isnt a pleasurefor everyone. It can actually be the opposite. Jasna Khans viewsare typical of many. I loathe the huge bookshops. Books for Youhas just opened in my high street and in my opinion its unfriendlyand far too noisy. In contrast, I much prefer smaller shopsbecause there is always someone to assist you. The big ones sellall sorts of CDs and DVDs and they always play loud musicthroughout the store, which in all honesty gives me a headache!

    TEXT D T S W

    Paragraph 5

    ________________________________

Soon we will stop using the word library. Not because wedont love books anymore but because we will call new libraries

idea stores and they will have cafs and crches for children.

A new library in Bow, East London, has brought colour andlight to one part of the capital. When you walk through themodern glass doors, you dont see shelves of books or busylibrarians. Instead there is a caf and a helpful security guardanswering questions.

Technology has changed things too. Now there are computersfor the internet and an area for DVDs and CDs.

The majority of people have been very positive since weopened, and only a few have said they prefer the old-stylelibrary, says manager Zoinul Abidin.

Rabia Puddicombe, a local journalist, says, The librariansseem much friendlier than in the past theyre always happyto chat. And whenever Im looking after my granddaughter,I bring her here to play with the other children. The crche

worker supervises her while I sit with a cup of tea.

Three students write articles for their college magazine. Look at Text E.

    TEXT E T S W

    Ali

Some of my friends never pick up a newspaper but I think theyregreat. I always turn to the back pages because I like to check thescores and see who has won. My colleague and I buy the paperbefore getting the bus to work and then look at it together, chatting about the interesting articles.

I think reading newspapers has greatly improvd my English so its very importantfor me. My teachers are always telling students that they should pick up the freeones and read an article a day.

I always ignore words I dont know instead of looking up all the words in thedictionary I think that saves time. Unlike most of my friends, I much preferreading to listening to the radio or watching TV.

    Fabiano

Recently Ive become interested in reading about famous peopleand celebrities in different countries. Some people think thatthere are too many stories about them and not enough seriousnews stories. However, Im mad about music so I always like toknow what my favourite singers are doing and what the latest

gossip is.After I finish reading, my sister always borrows my papers and magazines shes interested in the sports pages. Its quite frustrating because she neverbuys her own!

Reading the newspaper has helped me develop my language skills. I alwayspush myself to read as quickly as possible and I look up all the new words in thedictionary. Then I like to talk to my wife about the stories which interest me most.

    Ding

I mainly look at newspapers for the politics because I think its

essential for us to know whats going on. My library has a vastselection of papers (lots of local, national and international ones)so I dont have to pay for them. I usually go there after work. They also lend books and CDs and have a good range of DVDs.The only problem is you cant take the papers home.

Reading newspapers has definitely helped me develop my English. I write downwords I dont know and then ask my teacher about the meaning when I go toclass. Shes always pleased that Im reading independently in my own time.Sometimes she recommends interesting news stories for us to read.

I think its really interesting how UK news stories are so unlike articles in papersin china. Its not just the content, but the writing styles arent similar either. In fact, the layout is the only thing thats the same.
