HOP IT OVER TO THE FROG RACEIf you’re looking for something that's a bit quirky, fun for all the family and free to attend, whilst raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, how about the World Frog RacingChampionships? It's not what it might appear at first glance, as these are not the slimylittle critters that live amongst the lily pads forever hopeful of a kiss from a passingprincess; no these are eight foot tall cut outs, brightly dressed in shorts and t-shirts andwaiting for teams of five to haul them along a track in a race to the line to take the title – itreally does have to be seen to be believed!

The World Championship 17th annual frog race is being held at the Peterborough Greyhound Stadium on Thursday June 20. Thedoors open at 6.30pm with the first of the frog races commencing at 7pm. There are still limited places available for groups of five toenter a team (believe us when we say no experience is necessary!) or alternatively, just go along on the night, pick a team to supportand cheer them home. For those that fancy a flutter, there’ll be a tote running and light meals will be available along with a full barservice. Come on take the leap and gribbet a go!

Along with choreographer Matt Flint andCan You Dance co-founder TomShilcock's workshops earlier in the day, students were treated to a two hourcontemporary dance session by LukasMcfarlane which left those in attendancetotally taken aback by both his passionand performance.

The students were then able to ask Lukas about his life as a dancer and his determination to succeed, he remindedthem that a dancer’s life is a constant battle and that their technical training will give them a strong advantage inmany auditions but that a dancer also requires the passion from within to make every move count.

One of my best friends died suddenly last month and the pain is still hard to live with.Antonio Todisco – known to everyone as Ando – was just 41 years-old and I feelprivileged to have known Ando for 23 of those years.

We met in 1990 when I was 16 and I became part of a group of friends who are like brothersto me. I’m the person I am today because of my friends and Ando in particular, who was a biginfluence on me growing up.

Advice, compassion, empathy, sincerity, wit, confidence, intelligence and a real zest for life –Ando had everything you’d want in a friend. He influenced some of my biggest ever decisionsand made me understand the importance of integrity.

Thank you Ando. Our lives will never be the same but our lives are all the better for knowingyou and loving you as a brother. We miss you.

If anyone who knew Ando would like to pay tribute to him, search Remembering Ando Todiscoon Facebook.

Remembering Ando

This means we get two fabulous Clarkesrestaurants in Peterborough and an evenbetter Riva at bigger, more intimatepremises that ensures Italian cuisine has apresence outside of the city centre.Sounds like the perfect excuse to dine atboth very soon.

GOOD NEWS FORCLARKES AND RIVA

PLEASE LET MEWIN THIS BIKE!The sun made a rare appearance for the BMF show last month and I went along to enter myself inevery competition going to win a bike.

This beautiful Harley was top of my wish list along with a 1969 Norton Commando in British racinggreen. I’m like a kid in a sweet shop at the BMF and always come back with bags of goodies(Fluxbabes calendar was the best).

The BMF is already Europe’s largest outdoor motorcycle show but this year’s event was even biggerthan before. One of the new features was the classic & vintage zone, which I hope will grow in 2014.

There’s a second chance to see more of the same when the BMF returns to Peterborough Arena forThe Tailend Show from September 13 to 15. For details, visit www.thebmfshow.co.uk

Monday June 17 is national Ride toWork Day and employees who ride towork at city-based motorcycle insurersBennetts will get a free biker breakfastand sports massage. They even get togo on an after-work ride out with

former bike racing champion JamesToseland.

Best of all, I get to go too! Theadvantages of life on two wheels areplentiful. Riding to work on a motorbikeor scooter is quicker, greener and

cheaper than using a car or publictransport. Most of all it’s fun – even if itdoes rain from time to time.

SUNNY HUNNY ANYONE?The boys (and girl) at Man About Town sponsors Balderston have started their eventful ride out season.

First trip was to Iron Horse Ranch in Market Deeping where it’s Bike Night every Thursday (6-9pm) andowner Richard lays on a special menu and live entertainment.

But there’s nothing like the whiff of sea air and vinegar at this time of year, which is why I recommendjoining the crew on their Hunstanton chippy run on Friday May 31.

Riders of all levels of experience are welcome and the ride out departs from the Balderston showroom at5.30pm.

Other rides planned this year include Boston Bike Night, the Skegness Lifeboat Bike Show and a (bus) rideto Peterborough Beer Festival. See dates and departure times on the Balderston Facebook page or give theguys a call on 01733 565470.

SEE CELLO INTITLE FIGHTA big shout to our city’s Italian Stallion Cello Renda who’s secured an Englishmiddleweight title challenge against holder Danny Butler on June 22 atPeterborough Arena.

This will be the biggest fight of Cello’s career and it couldn’t have come at a bettertime for him. Cello’s boxing has visibly improved and he’s training harder than ever. He’s dedicated, disciplined and deserves success.

It’s going to be a fight to remember (most of Cello’s bouts are) and I know he won’tstop until that title is his.

For tickets, search Marcello Renda on Facebook or call him on: 07947 106116.

FAB NIGHT ATVIVA REUNIONIt promised to be a night to remember and the Viva La Rock Reunion certainly livedup to its pre-event billing. The Brewery Tap was packed with faces from back in theday – most were one-time Viva goers and the rest were there to pay homage to theclub they wish they’d frequented.

There was something special about everyone from a period in the city’s night scenebeing all together under one roof. Nostalgia unites people and so does music – a bigshout to everyone who helped compile a fabulous play list.

But the biggest thank you goes to organiser Graham Fairbairn. The reunion was hisidea and best of all it raised more than £900 for Cardiac Risk In the Young (CRY). Atop night never to be repeated...?

PICNIC THECARLUCCIO’S WAYIf you’re like me and love the idea of having a picnic butcan’t be bothered to actually make one then Carluccio’shas the answer.

The Italian eatery’s ‘classic’ picnic hamper is priced atjust £45, serves two people (three courses), and isgenerously packed full of mouth-watering Italiandelicacies, freshly made on the day and presented ina smart, reusable cool-bag.

Carluccio’s can rustle up a picnic for every occasion, plus there’s a vegetarian option and kids’ hampersfor £10.

This is a fantastic idea and I’d really like to see someof our independently-run restaurants do the same.

SunshineSummer is finally on its way – isn’t it? Flip-flops, bad feet hygiene, cider, sunburn, Brazilian, Chlamydia, portaloos, rain, rash, commando, BBQpink chicken, Imodium, sweat rings, GU clinic, muffin tops, binging, topless sunbathing and binoculars (because the sky at night is clear).

I’ve spoken to afew people

who’ve said myPerkins Great Eastern

Run article (in last month’sESP) inspired them to signup to the popular event. One person in particularsaid – “Well if you can doit, so can I.” This mayhave been an insult butit’s true. As I said before,if a lazy, take-awayaddict can do it… youcan too! At the latestcount just under 1,600have already entered.

If you missed May’s edition ofESP, check it out online

www.espmag.co.uk to read my tips onmotivating yourself to run.

This month I wanted to go into dieting.

If you could do with shedding a few pounds(much like myself) in order to help with yourrunning, then here are a few tips for you.

Firstly, to lose a pound, the average personmust burn 3500 calories. If you’ve started yourPGER training, this should be achievablewithin a few days IF you are eating healthilytoo. Many runners believe that they can eatwhat they like as long as they’re exercisingtoo. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

You are of course entitled to treats, but whynot buy them as and when, rather thanbuying snacks in bulk during your big shop. You’ll be less likely to go on a sweetrampage. Also bear in mind that a plaindonut has 185 calories which is theequivalent of a two mile run. Just one DonerKebab can contain up to 2,000 calories, theequivalent of doing the Perkins GreatEastern Run!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying youshould stop eating these foods completely.

I’m simply suggesting taking a moment tothink about the run before thinking about thelocal take-away.

This year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run takesplace on Sunday October 13 at 10.30am.You can take part in the half marathon or the5k fun run by simply visitingwww.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk

Younger runners should consider the JuniorChallenge, which supports the charity Anna’sHope and is an incentive for schools andyoung people's groups, such as brownies andcubs to enter the Junior Challenge in the 5kFun Run.

The Voyager Academy’s already raised £1,223and will be given a sports kit courtesy ofChromaSport Schoolwear & Trophies. Youngrunners can raise money for the charity of theirchoice, but can win additional prizes courtesyof ChromaSport Schoolwear & Trophies andSainsbury's when raising money for Anna'sHope.

Don’t forget free training sessions start in Julyif you need some support and there are moredetails on the website.

We’ll have more tips in next month’s ESPMagazine. Until then, good luck with thetraining. I may see you around FerryMeadows!

A friend of mine, who happens to be a wheeler/dealer,sees a big old house out of town. The windows werefalling out, paint peeling on the doors etc.

He noticed a sign in the window saying, FOR SALE –TALKING DOG.

He enquired about the dog and the owner said it was inthe garden, so he goes to the dog in the garden and says– ‘I believe you can talk’.

The dog answers ‘yes’ saying ‘I was working for thepolice and got a few people put in prison because Icould talk. Also I was in the C.I.D. and got bigger crooksput away. Not only that, I managed to stop World War 3because I worked in a spy organisation.’

As I was leaving I asked the owner what price hewanted for the dog. He replied ‘50p’. I said ‘Why is heso cheap?’

He replied – ‘He’s such a liar!’

George Simons

In 2010 a little known singer from New York posted a musicvideo on YouTube that she’d filmed and edited herself on herMacBook. That video, Video Games, was a hit with music

fans including Radio One’s Fearne Cotton and went viral, scoring 75 million views to date. Three years on, Lana Del Reyis the most written about female on the web (according toGoogle’s figures for 2012) and has never looked back.

Born plain old Lizzy Grant, Lana Del Rey made her performancedebut when she was 19 at an open mic night. “Somebody ranout after me and said – ‘You should come to a night I’m doingnext week and play some songs for me’,” she said of that timeand the rest, as they say, is history.

It was around this time that she changed her name to the rathermore exotic sounding Lana Del Rey. "I wanted a name I couldshape the music towards,” she specified in a UK Vogueinterview. "I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba – Lana DelRey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It soundedgorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue."

Since that time, Lana has sold over 4 million albums and 5million singles, won an Ivor Novello award and this year added

a second Brit award to her list of accolades. She’s also fronteda fashion campaign for H&M, is the face of the Jaguar F-Type,which launched last month and has had a Mulberry handbagcreated in her honour. Not bad for a girl who grew up singing inher local church choir!

She’s currently in the midst of a sell out European tour, the UKleg of which finished in May, but British fans of the enigmaticsinger can still get their fix as she’s written and performedsongs for the soundtrack of the Great Gatsby movie, starringLeonardo DiCaprio. Also featuring music from Beyoncé,Will.i.am and Florence and the Machine, the soundtrack’sproduced by none other than Jay-Z and Lana’s contribution,Young and Beautiful is described as ‘hauntingly melodious’. Shecollaborated with the film’s director, Baz Lurhmann in creatingthe song and says of the experience – “It was an honour towork with Baz Lurhmann on his amazing adaptation of oneof the most extraordinary books ever written. The movieis highly glamorous and exciting; Rick Nowels and Iwere thrilled to write the song for the film.”

Having achieved so much in her three short years in thelimelight, it’s hard to imagine how Lana Del Rey couldtop the career heights that she’s achieved so far. But

not one to become complacent, she’s currently working on thefollow up to her number one album Born to Die which she sayswill be “a more spiritual affair”. With her star riding so high, it’sbound to be a surefire hit and with so many projects in thepipeline, one thing’s for sure, we can expect to see a whole lotmore of Miss Del Rey over the next few years.

For more info on Lana Del Rey and forthcoming projects, followher on Twitter @LanaDelRey or go to www.lanadelrey.com

AFTER EARTH Released: June 7

The father and son team of Will andJaden Smith combine forces in thisthriller which is aiming to be the start ofa new sci-fi franchise. This is the secondpost-apocalyptic Earth-based movie outin recent months – after Tom Cruise’sOblivion – but this undoubtedly hasmore of a blockbuster feel about it. TheSixth Sense director M Night Shyamalanwill hope to reverse his slide from fameby helming his first movie in three years– as young cadet Kitai Raige (JadenSmith) crash lands with his legendaryfather Cypher (Will Smith) on an evolvedEarth that hasn’t seen humanity for morethan 1,000 years.

WORLD WAR Z Released: June 21

Brad Pitt takes on the undead – and aparticularly tough sub-genre – to try andturn Max Brooks’ novel into a blockbustermovie. He stars as United Nationsemployee Gerry Lane, as armies andgovernments start to crumble with amassive zombie pandemic threatening towipe out the human population. Andthese are the fast, ravenous, zombie-types seen in the likes of 28 Days Later, not the slow-plodding Romero ones youcan simply jog past. Credit to Pitt – who’ssupported in the movie by AnthonyMackie (The Hurt Locker) and BryanCranston (Argo) – for trying somethingoutside the box.

THIS IS THE END Released: June 28

It may struggle to wrestle the comedysummer crown from The Hangover: PartIII, but Seth Rogen and pals – includingJames Franco and Knocked Up cohortsJonah Hill and Jay Baruchel – aim to giveit a go as an impending apocalypseleaves six partying friends trapped in aLos Angeles house with the likes ofRihanna. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin feverthreaten to tear apart their friendship asthey struggle for survival – with comedichigh-jinks no doubt ensuing. Superbadand The Pineapple Express scribe EvanGoldberg helps out Rogen on directorialduties.

DESPICABLE ME 2 Released: June 28

One of the best new animations in recentyears – complete with those lovableminions – gets the unsurprising sequeltreatment as it goes head-to-head withMonsters University for summer box-office glory. Steve Carell’s Gru isrecruited by the Anti-Villain league totake on a new super criminal (voiced byBenjamin Bratt after Al Pacino recentlyjumped ship due to creative differences). An impressive voice cast, which includesBridesmaids’ Kristen Wiig, TheHangover’s Ken Jeong, and Brit starsRussell Brand and Steve Coogan, willhopefully build on the success of theterrific first outing.

Christopher Nolan has lent a hand inan executive producer and writingcapacity as this latest take onKrypton’s famous son tries to finallysolidify his place in a currentgeneration of cinema – after themixed reaction to 2006’s SupermanReturns.

The future of a possible JusticeLeague movie – DC’s equivalent toThe Avengers – seems to be layingheavily on the shoulders of thelatest incarnation of The Man ofSteel, but 300 and Watchmendirector Zack Snyder may just be theman for the job.

Russell Crowe has stepped into theshoes made famous by Marlon

Brando by tackling the role of Jor-El,with an impressive cast – includingAmy Adams as Lois Lane, KevinCostner as Jonathan Kent andLaurence Fishburne as Perry White– fleshing out what could besomething quite special.

With Michael Shannon playing therole of villainous General Zod, anew chilling theme tune, thepromise of more action set-pieces,and a trailer that has truly whettedthe appetite of fanboys – let’s hopethis truly lives up to expectations.

The lives of The Green Lantern, TheFlash, Wonder Woman and even aChristian Bale or re-cast Batmancould well depend on it...

DEAD ISLAND: RIPTIDE(360/PS3/PC) Out now

Can you ever have too much of a good thing? Dead Island: Riptidedoesn't seem to think so.

This sequel to the hit 2011 first-person zombie slashing RPG originalpicks up directly after the climax of the first game – and it’s more ofthe same.

But that's no bad thing if you’re a fan of the original, as dismemberingzombies and scouring the vast island, be it alone or with up to threeothers via co-op, is still ridiculously satisfying.

Whether you import your save or start from scratch, levelling up isaddictive – and while the main story is slightly underwhelming, countless side quests and the monstrous 'Dead Zones' will quenchyour thirst for more blood.

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US (PS3/360/WIIU) Out now

There were fears that a fighting game featuring DC Comics’ mosticonic characters couldn’t be this good – but you’d be wrong.

The developers behind Mortal Kombat have put together one of themost surprisingly immersive games of the year – featuring heroessuch as Batman, Superman, The Flash and Wonder Woman, to villainssuch as The Joker, Lex Luthor and Bane – that oozes qualityproduction values.

Through story or battle modes, this is compelling stuff – and finishingoff opponents as the Man of Steel high above the earth is quiteliterally out of this world.

METRO: LAST LIGHT(360/PS3/PC) Out now

This sequel nicely builds on the post-apocalyptic foundations laid bythe 2010 original to provide another inventive first-person shooterthat’s just that little bit different.

Publishers Deep Silver showed confidence in developers 4A Games bypicking this up from the now-defunct THQ – and even though it’s a tadlinear, this world from the Dmitry Glukhovsky novel can be anengrossing experience.

Sadly it’s hampered by a few bugs – crashes and frame-rate problemsdo give it an unfinished feel – which prevents this from ever reachingclassic status.

But its originality still makes this a slow-burner well worth yourattention.

STAR TREK: THE GAME(PS3/360/PC) Out now

Going boldly where pretty much everyone has been before, Star Trek:The Game is something of a damp squib.

With a fresh story and a fully licensed voice cast – including Chris Pineand Zachary Quinto as playable characters Kirk and Spock – hopes ofa Mass Effect-style experience were initially very high.

Sadly it's linear stuff from the off, with fiddly controls not helping thepredictable third-person 'cover and shoot' procession.

Loyal Trekkies may still enjoy the battle with reptile-like enemiesdubbed 'the Gorn', but it's unlikely to live long and prosper for long –unless you’re an absolute die-hard.

FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON(360/PS3/PC) Out now

There’s been a lot of hype surrounding this VHS-era downloadablehomage (via XBLA and PSN) to action films of the eighties – and itdeserves a lot of plaudits for its original tongue-in-cheek take on thegenre. Built around the Far Cry 3 engine – without having anythingdirectly to do with my favourite game of last year – you star as a partman, part machine, sergeant (played by The Terminator legendMichael Biehn) out to bring down a ruthless battalion of killer cyborgs.

The hilarious cut-scenes and comedic touches do cleverly gloss overwhat’s ultimately only an above-average shooter – but it’s still wellworth a playthrough.

Karen Devine

Ready for a springclean to boost your get up and go? ESP’sKaren Devine busts themyths on detoxing…

As I write this I have less than 24 hours to jet off toSpain to facilitate a detox week which I love with apassion, not only to meet people of like minds butthose open to change and willing to take precioustime out for self help and healing.

I’m not writing here about how to detox – this has tobe a personalised approach and taken with care, particularly if you have health issues and takemedication. However, many people can safely makechanges/additions to help the body power up its ownhealing capacity.

‘Detox’ has become the buzz word in recent years, andin many cases overused and misunderstood. I don’tclass myself as an expert here but after 14 yearsstudying and researching, lecturing and recently beingasked to write new lectures on the subject, I can saywith confidence it’s one of the most important aspectsof supporting optimal health as our vitality depends onhow well our systems are working and ultimately howwell we detoxify and produce our cellular energy. Wehave to be able to capture the toxins, drain andeliminate them out of the body effectively otherwisethey’re circulated back in!

Our chemical world is growing at an alarming ratewith more and more being introduced into ourenvironment every year. Much of the research looks atthe high toxic dose of the substance on the humanbody but not on the low ‘trace’ amounts that we takein on a consistent basis. Basically what we eat, drink, inhale, put on our skin and of course what’s producedin the body (by-products of metabolism, fungi, bacteriaas well as stress hormones etc), has to be detoxified.

Our body does have its own inbuilt mechanismsdesigned by nature to do this – but you can’t expect apiece of machinery to be overworked like this, withoutoiling it or cleaning it. Take our cars, we need to getthem serviced each year to clean out the plugs and oil,so what about our fluids such as lymph and blood?

Personalised detox programmes are best as we alltolerate these toxins and their affects differently, andsupplements must be carefully chosen to get thingsright. With that said, we can all have a ‘spring, summer, winter or autumn’ clean up. For us to help ourbody we have to provide it with good nutrients,

including essential proteins, fats, enzymes (lots of rawveggies and some fruits), vitamins and minerals and ofcourse good hydration and fibre.

You can add in broths, juices and smoothies if youwant to enhance your diet further. And not forgettingto remove caffeine, sugars, junk foods, fizzy drinks, alcohol, high antigen foods such as gluten, soy, corn, milk products etc. Oh, and cigarettes, please don’t kidyourself by adding in some luxury nutrients and thenhave a few crafty fags during the day!

If you experience headaches, lethargy or irritabilitythis is not a detox reaction as many will claim – it ismore likely a withdrawal from your addictions such assugar, tea, coffee etc.

What is crucial is that you stop (or reduce where youcan) the sources of chemicals by making a fewchanges such as:

• Remove the junk from your plate and palate(sugars, caffeine, processed foods and the like).

• Source organic foods if you can afford it.Vulnerable fruits such as berries are sprayedheavily with chemicals, as is lettuce andvulnerable leafy veg, whereas hardier fruits andveg such as avocado, melon and pineapple aremore resilient, so you can mix and match to savemoney or buy more locally grown seasonal fruitsand buy a veggie wash to help take off someresidue.

• Ditch plastic where possible, exchange cling filmfor greaseproof paper to wrap foods, and don’theat foods in plastic trays, use glassware. Ditchplastic bottles and buy a good sports safe drinkingbottle or other safe bottle. I will talk about plasticdrinking bottles another time!

• Ditch those nasty smelly chemicals you plug in thewall to give a scent and stop spraying the home, open windows or burn natural essence candles.

• Reduce/avoid using hairsprays and spraydeodorants, you can find many good essential oilroll on’s or natural deodorants on the market.

• What are you slapping on your skin? Thechemicals in some of our skincare products arefull of toxic compounds, opt for more naturalorganic skincare where possible. Most of us cancut down on what we use anyway, one of thebest tools I’ve found for soft skin is basically skinbrushing – not only does it help lymphatic flow itsloughs off dead skin cells!

Whilst I can fill ESP with information on reducingchemicals and boosting your detoxification capacity,I’ve only skimmed the surface for you here.

If you’re going to have a spruce up, add meditation, yoga, a sauna, soothing music, keep yourself awayfrom excess exercise and stress and give yourself a bitof down time too!

Organically yours,

Great GatSByGroominG With the recent release of the epic film The Great Gatsby it seems thateveryone, including men, have gone 1920’s crazy. So tap into your innerGatsby or treat your dad to some dandy style this Father’s Day with aselection of gentleman’s grooming products from Lush…

Think clean cut, slicked back hair and you’ll have the style of the twentiesdown to a T. Try Dirty Hair styling cream to help hold hair in place with amatt finish. The 1920’s dandy gent is also known for his smooth, clean-shaven face. Prepare your skin for a cut throat shave by exfoliating twice aweek to remove dead skin cells and in-growing hairs. Lush’s Ocean Saltcleanser, infused with lime, sea salt and grapefruit, gives highly polishedresults for the ultimate well-groomed visage.

The Gatsby lifestyle of late, alcohol fuelled nights might sound glamorousbut can result in red, blemished and dehydrated skin – not so stylish. ApplyCosmetic Lad moisturises to calm, heal and protect your skin post shaving.

For those true dandy dads out there who are donning a moustache, ensurehis plumage is maintained in place with Ultabalm; after all no one likesdrooping upper lip foliage. But, for the ultimate dandy persona and to setpulses racing dab on The Voice of Reason. This bourbon enrichedfragrance is reminiscent of smoky jazz clubs with added notes ofsandalwood and espresso. You’ll be sure to smell reassuringly old-fashioned!

Br-WoWzerS Model Cara Delevingne is well known for her spectacularly bold and bushyeyebrows which are now all the rage. In fact some women are sodesperate to have the ‘Cara Brow’ that they’re resorting to having theireyebrows tattooed on and in some cases even surgery to disguise theirpluck happy habits.

But you’ll be pleased to hear that there really is no need to go to suchextreme measures thanks to Along Came Betty’s Br-Wow kit. Thisamazing little compact kit allows you to shape, define and fix your browsfor an uber- structured look. You can get brows that wow in just three easysteps…

1) Add a little colour to help shape your brow with the neutral duo

2) For definition apply a touch of wax

3) Set with a dusting of thetranslucent powder to soften to ahair like finish

Available exclusively at Tesco, just£5.99.

Nail It - As far as nails go during these sunshine months, anything goes and the brighter the better. Pick a colourand go crazy with it; reverse French, stripes and polka dots(my personal fave) are all set to be huge. Textured nailsare also helping to hot up this summer. Nails Inc FeatherEffect polish, available in four beautiful shades, is a greatway to start. Made up of lots of strands of feather likeparticles it adds a pop of colour at the same time ascreating a quill effect on your nails. Then there are theNails Inc Bling It On Neon sets, £20 each, which contain abase colour polish, top coat and most importantly sparklyloose glitter in some amazingly bright colours ideal forsummer holidays. Pure mani magic!

Get Lippy – Bold, bright lips are the name of the game forsummer 2013 with colour pop pouts taking over thecatwalks. Whether it’s hot pink, pillar box red or crazycoral it’s a sure set way to update your look. My firstchoice coral shade is Barry M Lip Paint in shade 53 – avibrant coral with a slight shimmer. Looks great for arelaxed day time look yet is easy to build up coverage for abold blast of colour on nights out. For those of you whoreally want to stand out from the crowd I recommendStila’s new After Glow Lip Colour, £12. Available in sixfunky colours, the crayon style applicator makes themeffortless to apply and the formula has staining propertiesfor a long last effect. They’re a whopping three timesbrighter than conventional colours to give you vibrancy byday but wait for it… they glow in the dark under UV lightmeaning your summer nights really will come alive. I knowI’ll be taking one to Ibiza with me this month.

Eye Popping – When you think of bright, and especiallyblue, eye shadow it may conjure up images of Pat Butcherbut the time has now come to stop being afraid! Trial thetrend with one of the high-pigmented Body Shop ColourCrush Eyeshadows. At just £7 a pop you can afford to trythem all. For the more daring colouristas out there whowant a full on blaze of colour check out MAC’s new BoldBrights Eyeshadow in Heroine (a powerful purple) orAblaze (full-on fuchsia); a sure set way to get a ‘wowthat’s bright, I need my sunglasses’ reaction.

I’m a huge fan of Escada’s Limited Editionspring/summer scents they treat us to each year soI could not wait to get my hands on this year’sCherry In The Air and was I disappointed? Hell no!

This new Eau De Toilette is fresh yet sweet andreally captures the essence and heart of an actual

cherry. The perfume combines notes of blackcherry, raspberries and even mandarin which addsa twist of citrus freshness to offset the almostmarshmallow feel it has.

Not only does it smell delicious but the bottle looksgreat too with cute little cherries printed on it as

well as a cherry ring charm on the cap of 50ml &100ml sizes.

This fun filled fruity fragrance is definitely a winnerand available from The Perfume Shop inQueensgate priced at EDT 50ml £34.50 and EDT30ml £24.50.

This season is all about eye-popping summerbrights; think Joseph and his Technicolor DreamCoat. From nail colours to lipstick, make sureyou shine brighter than the sun this season.

Sitting quietly in a unit down Vicarage Farm Road isone of the city’s most accomplished and travelledmusicians, Carlos Parlato, ‘El Tano’ to his friends.

However, to confine his talent to the city would perhapsundersell this world renowned percussionist anddrummer having played alongside music legends GloriaEstefan, Rickey Martin and Christina Aguilera, he truly isa global talent.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina he first starteddrumming at the age of six, influenced by his twouncles. They’re both musicians and Carlos used to hearthem play when he was very young and wanted to dothe same. His mum gave him a saucepan and a woodenstick to calm him down one day and the rest is history.

His formal musical education began at the BerkleeCollege of Music in the United States. “There weresome cool musicians around the campus at that time,”

Carlos tells me. Names like Horatio Hernadez, (DizzyGillespie) Denis Chambers (Parliament and Funkadelic)Dom Famularo (BB King) and Chester Thompson (PhilColins) which is quite and an inspiration in itself.

He started working for the Warner record label when hewas just 16 years-old, a prodigious talent indeed. “I was16 years-old and one of their resident drummers, I sawstars every day it was incredible!” Time soon saw himtouring with Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin. “BothRicky and Gloria were really nice people to work with –they had very good personalities which is just asimportant as making the music. They both have a hugepassion for music which is felt by anyone they workwith. They don't have huge egos like some famousmusicians.”

To try and put that into perspective she was a star onboth sides of the Atlantic and topping the charts on both

sides so those whose memory serves them well willremember her face was all over the place.

Later he toured with Rickey Martin another global megastar known to all. At this point Carlos’ Englishsuperlatives are expressed in head shakes, smiles andhand gestures such was the euphoria of being in such aposition. Suffice to say he recorded on albums with himbetween 1981 – 1995.

By 1988 he’d become a professor of drums andpercussion at the Direccion de Cultura University inBuenos Aires but again the stars would come a callingin the shape of Christina Aguilera. The 1999 album MiReflejo features Carlos and he toured with her during1998 – 1999. “Christina is a standard very good person -she is hyped up by the media to be a diva just forpublicity. Music is her main focus and most important toher,” Carlos tells me.

All in all he’s featured on 135 albums over the years – check out his work withLatin American giants Los Tulipanes with whom he worked between 2000 and2003 – how many stars can say they’ve achieved that kind of total? Very few. What it does is stand testimony to the quality of his playing that bands want himto play live and to session, a feat rarely heard of these days and may never beachieved by people on any instrument in the future.

Family in Peterborough brought him here, his brother and uncle have lived in thecountry for more than 35 years, and some family came after the war. His mum,dad and family also live here. Carlos has made this his home for just over 10 yearswhere he plays nationally with his band G-Tano occasionally and playedGlastonbury with Kissmet. He also played alongside Emerson Lake and Palmer indrum clinics, however he now indulges his other passion in music, teaching.Carlos has always spent lots of time teaching kids with disabilities especiallyAutism. A true case of a man giving back to a profession that’s been good to him.

From his studio and teaching business in Vicarage Farm Road he immerseshimself in the kids and in running a high quality recording studio. “Yes thebusiness matters and that we record to a perfect quality but the kids matter tome, it is good to see them smile and be happy and learn.”

You can also learn drums and percussion from him, and I say this without hype –he is a real master, this guy is the real deal.

He’s now rebranded his studio as the El Tano Music Academy with businesssupport from fellow musician Lorna Stockdale who added – “I’m really proud tobe leading the expansion with Carlos –his passion for music just shinesthrough.”

A packed house at the Cock Inn, Werrington, saw Hooker in a celebratory mood as theband’s keyboard player, Pasq Chiarizia, celebrated his 50th birthday in fine style.

Nice to see classic rock can be played by aman wearing a giant tin badge on his chest(‘I’m 50’)!

The addition of the keyboards has certainlyenabled Hooker to expand their set list withsome great variety to the music.

Pasq, as many will know, is multi-talented,being the owner of Verso Hair salon inWestgate. So I thought of some songs thatHooker could have featured on the night. Theyinclude:

Whitesnake’s ‘Hair I Go Again’

First Cut is the Deepest

Tinted Love

Comb Together

Hair do you go to my Lovely?

AND anything by Scissor Sisters, CuttingCrew, Style Council or Blow Dry Monkeys.

Any other suggestions?

The band have another celebration – their20th together – at the Ploughman inWerrington in early July. It’s the pub’s CharityBeer Festival, details to the right on the event.

So it made me wonder whether there are anymore celebrations for Hooker this year?

Rumour has it that Trev and his orange boilersuit have been together for 25 years!

SHAKE HANDSERIC RELEASESINGLE Local band, Shake Hands Eric, have released a new downloadsingle, Turning Down the Thunder and like previous releases it’sreceiving wide internet play. The band whose own compositionsremind me of a cross between The Eagles and Crowded Houseare Richard Young, singing and guitar, Andy Tonkin on piano,Mark Hurrell with bass, Ken Robson on lead guitar, and LesPotton on drums.

They’re next scheduled for two gigs on Saturday June 8. Firstly inthe afternoon at Field of Dreams in Whittlesey and then doing thelate night music from 11pm at North Street Bar in Peterborough.

You can also catch Shake Hands Eric on BBC RadioCambridgeshire’s Tom Simkins show on June 22.

Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin – together on the same bill. A dream gigthat never was – until now! The music of two of the greatest heavy rockbands of all time will be brought together by Purple Zeppelin. Theyappear on Saturday June 15 at Stamford Corn Exchange starting at7pm. Many years have passed since the last UK gigs from the classicline-ups of both bands, and the original Led Zeppelin in particular arethe band that I most wish I’d seen live, but didn’t.

Purple Zeppelin bring a ‘full on’ two and a half hour show, with costumechanges for each band and it also comes complete with RitchieBlackmore’s lute, Jimmy Page’s twin neck guitar and a very specialviolin bow solo.

Purple Zeppelinare four talentedand versatilemusicians whobring greatshowmanship totheirperformances. Allhave beengigging andsession musiciansfor many yearsand are genuineadmirers of bothDeep Purple andLed Zeppelin.Since 2005they’ve beenselling out venues up and down the country and their reviews have beentremendous. As far as I know, this is their first appearance in our area.

Tickets available from Stamford Corn Exchange in Broad Street. Boxoffice phone 01780 766455.

Not long to go music fansand we’re getting excited! The countdown to this year’s mega free music event TheWillow Festival (TWF) is now on with new bands being addedby the day. But do we hear cries of ‘Hope the flaming weatherimproves…’? Never fear folks the organisers have it allsorted. Not only are there seven marquees giving cover tothousands while various bands take to the stages, but they’rebringing in the most enormous structure that’ll provide coverfor around 17,000 music lovers watching the main acts – sowhatever our good old British summer throws at us, rain orshine, your viewing pleasure won’t be marred by a soaking orsunburn! We like it.

You may have been along to some of The Willow FestivalAcoustic Showcase sessions at venues across the area andhad your musical appetite whetted, well they’ve proved sosuccessful a special acoustic marquee has been added to theline-up.

TWF organiser Mark Ringer told ESP – “I’m really pleasedwith this addition and the chance to provide another outletfor even more music and its thanks to venues like The Crown,Mama Liz's in Stamford, North Street Bar, The PalmserstonArms and The Solstice who’ve got behind it.

“Interest in The Willow Festival generally is really picking upand from what we’re hearing I think we’re looking at somehuge crowds over the weekend.”

This fabulous free – yes that’s FREE festival – takes placeover three days on The Embankment in Peterborough fromJuly 12 – 14 and will showcase in excess of 150 artists witha big emphasis on local talent as well as plenty from furtherafield being signed up every week. Some of those already onthe bill are Paolo Morena, The More I See, The Floe, SilverStreet (from Norway!), Thumpermonkey, Groove Cartel, StrawBear, Echoes of Floyd and Aladdinsane.

It’s not just music of course there’ll be plenty of food anddrink, stalls and fair ground rides including a brand new megaride which we’re told will blow you away!

ESP is proud to sponsor this great family orientated musicfestival in the city and will keep you up to date with all thelatest on www.espmag.co.uk but look out for a full featurein the July issue.
