Nina has a great life. She loves her family, she does well in school, and her friends are awesome. But suddenly Nina starts feeling... off, and she finds herself slipping into a dark reality she cannot understand, let alone articulate to the people around her. Still/Falling follows Nina as she tries to come to terms with what it means to struggle with anxiety and depression, and to rise above it with as much strength, and as few scars, as possible. A realistic, honest and bitingly funny look at the difference between ‘teen angst’ and mental illness and the ways vulnerable kids can start to find their way out of the dark.

HannaraptorMarch 13 | $2/seat (Kindergarten - Grade 4 2 shows | 10:00 am | 1:30 pm

Mistatim is a coming of age story about the truest of friendships. A wooden fence is all that separates Calvin’s ranch and Speck’s reservation, but in many ways they are worlds apart. An unlikely friendship is struck between the two 11-year olds when Calvin attempts to ‘break’ a horse that no one else can tame in order to prove himself to his father. Speck, who is struggling to find her place in her family, discovers her incredible gift to communicate with horses. She finds she can empathize with Mistatim. Working together to rein in the wild horse, Calvin and Speck learn to communicate with one another across the divide of their own cultures.

Calgary Opera presents the performance Hannaraptor. Set against the backdrop of the Alberta Badlands, Hannaraptor tells the story of a girl, Hanna, whose determination to protect a beloved dinosaur fossil propels her into a life-and-death struggle against rapacious greed. This one-act opera evokes the eternal fascination with dinosaurs and the mysterious world of pre-history, weaving together a timely story with compelling issues of social responsibility and a family’s personal triumph.

Bell, a successful New York fashion photographer recently returned to Medicine Hat, shows his fine art photography skill with these emotionally resonant images, shot and printed using traditional analogue processes rather than digital. Plastic bags caught on fences and trees entangled with wire are rendered in richly textured black and white prints, of which The Washington Post’s Director of Photography, MaryAnne Golon, writes: “There is beauty, loss and poetry in every frame.”

Elaine Freedman

Elaine Freedman, Untitled (Moment #2), 2015, photograph on paper

Corresponding WorkshopElaine Freedman’s portraits offer a small glimpse into the lives of the subjects within them. This corresponding workshop gives students the chance to share and get to know their classmates’ personalities through portraiture. Using the exhibition as inspiration, students will learn drawing techniques to relay personality traits within the drawn portraits of their peers. Students will be introduced to the basics of facial proportions and conveying meaning through visual representation in this project.

A Moment: Portraits of WomenMarch 24 – May 12, 2018

Travelling through France and Belgium in 2014, Calgary photographer Dianne Bos used a variety of vintage and pinhole cameras to photograph the land a century after the Great War. During printing, she scattered objects from the battle sites - such as rocks, leaves, and a bullet - over the paper, as well as dodging, burning, and overlaying maps of stars, to produce layers of imagery that convey the emotional depth of these extraordinary landscapes. In this way The Sleeping Green is not about the war itself: the exhibition explores how a terrible historical event has become part of the fabric of our collective imagination. Organized by the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery.

Elaine Freedman’s portraits embrace a diversity of women in the Medicine Hat area, in this series of over 50 photographic works. Most are the results of only fleeting contact, while some are portraits of people she has known for years. Freedman sub-tly manipulates the backgrounds in relation to the sitter, and comments that she comes to know their image intimately, although she may not know them as people – photography’s eternal contradiction.

Humour, pathos, unusual materials and an uncanny ability to represent the indescribable characterize this sample of Alberta/New York artist Jude Griebel’s sculptures from the last five years. Jude’s beings and landscapes are interchangeable, with elements of each - plants, shells, trees, man-made environments and machinery - characterizing the other. Evoking a range of human emotions, situations and environmental disasters, the sculptures are at once whimsical and touching, dismaying and delightful. Jude comments: “I use dioramic surfaces to translate bodily experience: the boundaries between bodies and the environment are fluid, casting light on how we identify ourselves and impact the world around us.” (artist statement, 2017)

January 6 – March 3, 2018

The 100th anniversary of the First World War has been an opportunity to examine Canadian craft related to war. ‘Trench art’ is any item made by soldiers, prisoners of war and civilians, from war material directly, or any other material, as long as it and they are associated with armed conflict or its consequences. Trench art as a tradition of creating wartime souvenirs dates back to the early 18th century and continues to this day. Keepsakes of Conflict presents objects from metalwork and carving to jewelry and embroidery. These pieces reflect the very personal stories of individuals in their experience of war. Organized by the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery.

Keepsakes of Conflict

March 10 – May 26, 2018

From 1903 to 1909, on expeditions to Hudson Bay, Geraldine and Douglas Moodie captured the landscapes and people of the region in dramatic and touching photographs. Drawn from an extraordinary collection of almost 500 vintage negatives in the Glenbow’s collection, this exhibition celebrates the couple’s photographic legacy of their years spent in the Arctic, and speaks to ongoing concerns of Canadian sovereignty in the North, the changing northern climate and the impact of exploration and development on the Inuit. Organized and toured by the Glenbow museum.

The Hunt

The deer’s head rises suddenly, ears twitching. The hunter holds motionless, waiting for the right moment. Soon, the shot. Then the process begins to transform deer into dinner. Hunting is and has been an enduring part of the history of Southern Alberta, from the first indigenous peoples to walk the land through to the modern day. The attitudes towards hunting and wildlife have changed greatly through the years. The Hunt is an in-house curated exhibit that looks at the history of hunting and the changing attitudes to wildlife and conservation in Southern Alberta.

Tours of the Heritage Gallery are facilitated by trained volunteers. Key tour stops with interactive activities are planned to elicit discussion.

This rare exhibition highlights the little-known rela-tionship between early Alberta artists and members of Group of Seven. As artists, from east and west, they shared an emotional bond with and a commitment to the Canadian landscape. Formed in Toronto in 1920 and disbanded in 1933, the Group of Seven is Canada’s most celebrated and internationally known collective of land-scape painters. Guest curated by Alberta art specialist Mary-Beth Laviolette, the exhibition includes work by both the Group of Seven and early Alberta artists.
