“Contemporary music videos are nearly elaborate adverts with little artistic, social or moral integrity”. Discuss with reference to music videos and theorists you have studied. Music videos were once a way of people telling stories and sharing experiences through music they were also a way of advertising their music and the clothing brands that would support them. Music video’s have chafed a lot over the years, many music videos are now about advertising women as pieces of meat. From the way male artists represent women in their music videos, it seems as if they have no respects for women. In one of Chris Brown’s he refers to women as hoes which is belittling to women. It is also a way of men feeling dominant and making women seem submissive. Chris Brown is looked up to by many people. Because of the disrespect shown by men towards women, teenage boys now think it is acceptable to call all girls hoes and treat them without respect. Girls have even started to go against each other and call one another disrespectful terms. This is where the morality in music has disappeared. Artists are manipulating people by the things that they sing/rap about. The use of women in videos means that it will attract more male attention, which results in more views. If an artist has more than 1million subscribers, they get payed for every video they make, so its like a cycle. More videos - more attention - more views -more money. Richard Dyer talks about the ‘star theory’ and discuss’ how having famous faces in fins ad music videos attracts more attention. For example, Justin Bieber’s was featured in one of Chris Brown. Justin Bieber is loved by millions of teenage girls around the world, so to have these two in the same video means more views. Justin Bieber hadn't been in the music business for that long she he featured in this song, so it was a win-win situation for both. Laura Mulvey’s theory of the ‘male gaze’ is relevant to many music videos at the moment. A good example of this would be JLO’s new song featuring Iggy Azalea ‘Booty’, which in my opinion is the biggest waste of money and is extremely inappropriate. Throughout the whole of the video all that is shown is their backsides. Videos like this mainly attract male attention. Videos like this change the way men think about women. Most men now war women

with small waists ad big bums as this is all they see on Tv. This often makes women think they have to change the way they look or dress to impress men. Not only does it bring male attention it brings in more money as more people would want to see the artist perform in concert. !!Another reason for music videos is to a message across. In Meghan Trainor’s hit song “All about the bass” she talks about women who have curves and of plus sizes. She believes that women of any size are beautiful and perfect. These types of songs are the ones that should be being played to young girls to restore their confidence.
