What is magical realism? Illustrate through magical realist elements in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold.

Evolution of magical realism : Magical realism flourished in Latin America literature in the splendor of the

1960s and 1970s due to differences between the culture of technology, and the culture of superstition. The

magic realism is a path to the newer form of Latin American narrative experimentation; it is the search for

reality through myth and history; to say the originality and the Hispanic American uniqueness in the world.

Outside the America, magical realism has influenced many critics and writers.

Defining magical realism : The most concise definition of magical realism is that it is the combination of

magical and real elements. It is a literary genre in which realistic narrative and naturalistic technique are

combined with surreal elements of dream or fantasy. This literary device molds the character of any novel as it

ingrain the reader into a realm where they can question practicality. It is combination of realism, along with

magical and mythical elements such as dreams that come true, superstitions, humors, exaggerations, and the

coincidence of the bizarre events. It introduces additional planes of reality.By using this literary device the

author illuminates certain themes and concepts of his work through bizarre and extraordinary elements and

preserve a certain level of believability. Magical realism also allows the reader to make his or her own

connections through his or her own knowledge and experiences. Magical realism creates a highly detailed

realistic setting that is invaded by something too strange to believe. It is frequently perceived to be clearly

designed for the entertainment of readers. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's name is basically synonymous with

magical realism. He might not have invented it, but he's probably the author most famous for his use of

magical realism in his novels. This essay will attempt to explore the extent, to which mystical aspects invade

this historical novel and thus affect its accuracy and to analyse the entertaining feature of this text.
