ROLE OF TEACHERS IN CHARACTER BUILDING

If students are said to be “The future of Nation”, then the teachers are those who can be

referred as “Future Builders of the Nation”. They build the future citizens of the country.

Education is one of the ultimate and most respectable services provided by teachers.

Teachers are the main pillars of a sound and progressive society. They bear the weight

and responsibility of teaching, and apart from parents, are the main source of

knowledge and values for children.

For any student, education and character are the basic foundations and it is laid by

teachers as well as parents. They tend to instill values, attitudes and behaviors in

children right from childhood. In this context of Character Building, there is a well-Known

saying “When wealth is lost nothing is lost, when health is lost something is lost but

when character is lost everything is lost”. Character is what a person is from inside his

true self. On the other hand it’s an interlocked set of personal values and the dream of

possessing a good character starts with a teacher who believes in his students, who

tugs and pushes and leads to the next plateau sometimes poking with a sharp stick to

mould the values inside us. A teacher effects eternity, he never tells where his influence

stops. Teachers are the beacon in life. They are our friend, philosopher and guide. They

hold the highest regard for students after their parents. They are full of knowledge and

provide education; However Teachers today have a much larger role than just

educating students. The kind of an individual becomes entirely depend upon the kind of

teacher. A positive or negative impact may change the entire life of an individual.

When for the first time a child steps out of the home the very first person he comes in

contact with is the teacher. There begins the journey of sweet relationship of a guru and

a student. Each and every teacher has a unique art to awaken in the students the

qualities like integrity, discipline, innovativeness, being fair, impartial, being assertive

without being arrogant, firm, self belief, trusting people, calmness, and courage to

dream and do things differently. This is what a teacher inculcates in their students. It is

easier for a potter to mould wet clay. Similarly it is easier for a teacher to mould the

students in whatever way they want in their growing stage as the soft, tender mind of

children is ready to accept what has been taught and they try to imitate what they see,

observe or listen.

Once a kinder garden student abused for his father for not bringing him the play station.

On asking from where he learnt that word he very innocently replied yesterday

mathematics teacher abused me for not doing homework. I learnt from him. This shows

how the little child imitated his teacher. Whereas on the other hand a student said sorry

to her mother for not listening to her because her teacher always said sorry to the

students if she doesn’t hear them. This is all about how a teacher can influence one’s

life.

Swami Vivekananda said that if you have assimilated five ideas of a teacher and makes

them life and characters then you have more education than any other man who has got

by heart a whole library. Character is a reflection of life and teacher is the mirror.

Teachers are not only one who teaches but also one who guides in every field of life.

We have many examples of such great teachers like Mahatma Gandhi, Sarvapalli

Radhakrishnan, and Jesus Christ, Bhagat Singh, who just not taught their preachers the

subjects but preached them the lessons of brotherhood, love, unity, culture, and

integrity. Great teachers are not born in the minds of students but they are born in the

hearts of the students. They are like a candle who consumes themselves to light the

way for others.

A teacher is like a musical instrument. He can produce either a sad music or a joyful

music by way of playing instrument. They have a very special place in the society. They

have the instinct to recognize talent and nurture it. They are the creators of responsible

citizens, who contribute to the society in one way or the other. To summarize teachers

are the character bank of the students.
