Body 1 - Explain what Ponyboy was like at the beginning of the novel.
Ideas; innocent, nave, not street-wise, judgemental (towards the Socs), believes
Darry doesnt love him and thinks there is meaning in fighting (rumbles).
Body 2-3 - Explain what events or experiences were critical in changing Ponyboy.
Ideas; meeting Cherry (changes his perception of Socs, sunsets), the fight (witnessing
death), Windrixville (running away, losing his hair, seeing a different side to Dally),talking to Randy (about he futility of fighting), Johnnys death (loss of innocence),
standing up to Bobs friends (maturity, street-wise), Dallys death (wasted life) and
talking to Darry (realisation that he loves him, grows-up)
Body 3 - Describe how Ponyboy has changed after these key events.
Conclusion - Summarise essay content, restate contention and make a comment about S.E.Hintonspurpose.
Terminology;
Novelinstead of book Plot the events that take place within the novel Setting the location and description of the place in which the novel is set. Character people involved in the novel Characterisation way characters are depicted, act and developed. Quote extract from the novel always include page numbers.
How to use a quote
If the quote is less than two lines you place it within the text. Example;
The cat was calm and content, like a soft pillowresting on the sofa. (pg. 23) An example ofthis is when Harry says, I have always stuck up for my buddies. This time was
no exception. (pg. 23)
If the quote is longer than two lines you indent it within the text. Example;
An example of this is when Jenny states; I looked towards the jetty and saw that he was sitting with her, holding hands. I wentinto shock for a second and then a strong sensation of rage overcame me. I ran towards
them and threw myself onto the girl, punching, screaming and tearing at her. (pg.23)

In the novel The Outsiders the central character, fourteen year-old Ponyboy
Curtis, undergoes a process of immense personal change.
Nutshell
Brief overview of novel
The novel, published in 1967, is narrated by Ponyboy and sheds a light on the
class conflict between the Greasers, a group of low-class youths, and the Socs
(short for Socials), a group of privileged rich kids who live in the wealthy West
Side of town.

This essay will explore the ways in which this class conflict dramatically
changed Ponyboys personality and understanding of the society around him.Over the course of two weeks Ponyboy must grapple with several turbulent
and challenging events and experiences. All of which force him into a rite of

class conflict that surrounds him.
