You sit in cloistered luxury, sipping on champagne with a symphony softly playing in the background. The noise, clutter and madness of Macau’s increasingly congested streets slips by un-noticed.

Impossible ? Not quite, you are inside a Rolls-Royce Phantom, perhaps one of the eight Wynn Macau

bought recently to serve its guests. Tiny Macau is no stranger to the Rolls Royce. Stanley Ho Hung-sun’s dark-blue Roller

with the plate MA-99-99 is iconic and STDM’s fleet for its guests is well known. Add StarWorld’s VIP limo for big-spending gamblers and you’ve got quite a RR ration per head.

So, what makes the rolls royce special?The rolls royce Phantom is made entirely by hand. Its frame is welded together by hand, and each leather component is personally signed by those who hand-stitched it and fitted it to the car. It takes a highly skilled craftsman three hours to paint a single six-metre long coachline. Special ox and squirrel hair brushes ensure the line is precisely level and a uniform 3mm in width.The Phantom’s frame is remarkably strong and stiff. It would take four tonnes of force to bend a one metre section by one degree. The car can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds (0-100kph in 5.9 seconds) and has a top speed of 149 mph (240 kph).Thanks to the 60° angle between the two cylinder banks of the V12 engine you can balance a MOP1 coin on the engine when it is running as there are no vibrations. and how’s this for attention to detail? a full-sized custom-made umbrella is stowed in each of the rear doors. They are housed in concealed compartments, which feature a draining system in case they are stowed when not completely dry.

If you have any doubts about the greatness of this car, spend a few night in a suite at Wynn’s and get the driver to take you for a ride. Savour the smell of its perfect leather finish and absence of any sort of stress and you’ll wish you could afford one, with your initials hand-stitched onto the seats…of course.

He is one of the best-kept secrets in town. a builder of the rarest racecars in our own backyard. It is hard to believe. and he keeps such a low profile…

What a Grand Prix!Neville McKay, a native australian with decades in Hong Kong and Macau, is definitely the local man you want to talk to about racing cars and, especially, Mallocks models. He is an enthusiast, to the point of building and collecting them like only a few would. He also keeps track of cars that raced in Macau, rebuilds other old glories and dreams about an historical cars parade in town. Trained as an aircraft engineer, he has his ‘wheels’ well on the asphalt. Once, he was defined by a Hong Kong newspaper as “one of australia’s best known motor racing-mechanics.” McKay went from racing around the world to searching the world for relics.

What do you do? “I own a company called ‘Historic Motor Sports’ that sells racing equipment and I am a one man museum of cars related to models of the 1960’s. I also keep track of cars that raced in Macau and the majority are in australia or New Zealand. They were sold because no one would take care of them here.”

How did this racecar love of yours start?“It began in australia. I was 14 when I started as an aircraft mechanics apprentice. My father was a ford mechanic, one of the first in australia, so it came naturally. I flew bi-motor Catalina’s in New Guinea in my late 20’s, and in 1967 [not 1964 as written in the newspaper] amidst the riots in Hong Kong I arrived to work becoming an engineer for Cathay Pacific for over 30 years. I was working on four-engine turbo Lockheed aircrafts at the time and for a while went to the united States to train with boeing. Meanwhile, I was developing my interest in racecars and building them…”

How many times have you been in a Macau Grand Prix either as a mechanics or a driver?“My first Grand Prix in Macau was in 1967. but back in 1957 I built a car to race in the Phillip Island racetrack in australia and my last competition in an official race was in 1972, but I raced in Macau in other events and recently in the 50th anniversary of the Grand Prix.”

Can you share some memorable stories from the GP?“I have so many. I remember especially stories related to Teddy yip [founder of STDM with Stanley Ho, he started racing for fun in the 1950’s and eventually owned a f1 team]. One day, Teddy’s racing car had a flat tyre right before the start of the race. So Teddy went to say nobody was to start without him while he sent his mechanic, who was a good friend of mine, to look for a tyre! He found one, the wrong size, but never mind, the car made it to the race and even to the end of it!”

What kind of cars do you build?“among others, the Mallock’s, especially the u2 model. It was used by John McDonald in 1973, a racing car and motor-cycle enthusiast from Hong Kong - originally from england - and best known as the most successful driver in Macau Grand Prix in the early 1970’s. That same car he used then was rebuilt by me and is running in australia right now.”

How long does it take to build one?“I buy pieces from around the world and it takes me six months to a year to build or recover a race car. and I’d rather rebuild something historic. In Macau my dream is to start the Historical Society of Vehicles. It would be so nice to parade them in the streets!”

What is the dream you have but don’t believe it will come true?“There were 27 formula Junior races in Macau in the past and I would love to revive it. The formula Junior ended because the cars went out of fashion. I adapt the old models I am rebuilding to make them meet the safety standards.”

Lexus LX 2009another one of these great deluxe and expensive SuV’s, this model is jam-packed with technology and offers a very spacious cabin. Its engine, almost imperceptibly, moves the ‘beast’ around graciously. reviews say this car cannot beat the audi Q7… It is one of the most expensive of its kind at MOP 590,000.

Porsche Cayenne 2009an SuV with high ‘cache’, it has one of the most luxurious interiors of all sports utility vehicles. It boasts great performance and is one of the safest on the market. The Turbo S featured starts at MOP1.7 mil.

Mercedes benz GL 500The GL 500 is Mercedes’ biggest seven-passenger, full-size SuV. for a cool MOP 1.23 mil, it comes with a full entertainment system, individual monitors, CD/ DVD and game console jacks in each passenger row: no more bickering on that weekend getaway trip to the other side of the border. and yes, your golf bag will look pretty alone in the luggage compartment...

audi Q7 2009Named “top safety pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the new audi Q7 comes in at MOP 989,000 for the 4.2 model. The 2009 series offers a quality interior with high attention to detail, although its performance doesn’t quite compensate for its weight.

bMW X5 2009With an acceleration as smooth as silk, as expected for this class of car, the new bMW X5 series offers an extremely comfortable drive although some external noise is noticeable in the cabin. Some reviews consider the model more of a sport sedan than a sports utility vehicle. Steering can be hard at low speeds. Starting price for the 4.8 model is MOP 912,000.

Marketing: Car dealers agree, the ‘sexier’ the car, the faster it sells. Women tend to believe there is a link between the type of car and the personality of its owner. Most male and female owners tend to think they are what they drive. for example, Porsche owners are said to be determined professionals. While women tend to focus on a car’s reliability and safety (possibly explaining why Volvo and Lexus SuV models are so popular) men want powerful engines, high performance and style.

The size of the car: It is said by some that a big car means a small...you know what. but we are sure that owners of dream machines consider this saying a scientifically unproven rule...however...(see next entry)

eager to show off: When we see clumsy drivers in big, flashy cars, a naughty association immediately comes to mind - that the driver is lacking in the sack. Disagree? Having something beautiful in your hands and not being able to take good care of it shows a great deal of incapacity…wouldn’t you say? estimating a car owner’s sexual prowess by the size and type of the car he or she drives was first attempted by an automobile magazine a few years ago. Guess what? The fiat 500 came out on the top! Meanwhile, women interviewed by an insurance company declared they were not attracted by the size or model of the car, but by its colour. In fact, some dated men because of the colour of their car.

Comfort: big or small - all cars have great potential as places of passion - as long as the imagination is fully utilised.

It was a great experience to find myself at the wheel of the new Volvo V50 T5. My first impressions, still imprinted in my memory, were its exterior lines. They are rich in

detail and definitely strike a difference, capturing the attention of even the most distracted passerby. Its lines are modern, attractive, tempting as if inviting the driver to slide inside and speed away.

The dimensions are adequate, even for some of our narrow roads and parking lots, which helps the driver get on with their chores, especially ladies cruising about.

Once at the wheel, the first thing that jumps out at the driver is the adequate position of the

electronic panels. That and the thoughtful free room for small bags and accessories the driver might be carrying.

The front seats give the right impression: we’re inside a high quality and durable automobile, ready to be driven for thousands of miles.

as soon as the foot hits the pedal, we can feel its power quickly responding with progressive speed, even over a short distance, while keeping its balance on the tight curves of some of the more cramped streets in Macau.

should start this review by confirming my bias for the bMW 7 Series: it is a beautiful piece of machinery and one I have always thought suited me to a tee. However, I was told a long time ago that you should

never own the same kind of car as your boss (and mine has impeccable taste), so I have deprived myself the pleasure of driving one till now. but having taken one on the road for the first time, I might have to bend that old rule a little bit….

The 7 Series is a majestic looking vehicle; big, stylish, powerful and unique, not unlike the Starworld Hotel & Casino where I began my test drive. yet the 7 Series drives like a sports car and gives the impression of a much more compact car in the way it handles. for a car that is so rewarding and comfortable to drive, it would seem a shame to buy one and then sit in the back to be driven. but if that’s the intended purpose, the back seat is a very comfortable place to be, complete with built-in DVD and enough leg, head and shoulder room to suit even that largest of executives.

The question of practicality for a car of this size, speed and power in a place like Macau is a reasonable one, and, in fairness, if the intended purpose is to self-drive, the Series 7 probably wouldn’t meet the required criteria for “practical”. However, unless you are driving a 1.2 litre compact that runs on batteries, few cars would be considered practical in this town, and the more important questions of personal preference, style, comfort and sheer indulgence need to take precedence.

That’s not to say the 7 Series is neither environmentally friendly nor economical as its 3.2L inline six cylinder engine produces 345 horsepower whilst using just 14 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres. This means the 7 Series has more than enough grunt and power to keep you grinning on the road, without causing you heartache at the pumps.
