Summer Club News Urban Youth Farm Club: Thirty-‐eight teens from Essex/Hudson County participated in the Urban Youth Farm Club program this summer. Youth partnered with 4-‐H volunteers to help maintain local community gardens while learning to grow food, utilize sustainable practices that inspire a great respect for the natural environment. Partners include the Rutgers VETS, Harsimus Cemetery, Pershing Field, Montclair Community Farms, and Essex County Parks. Young Gardeners: Members began preparing the soil in June, and by the end of June our seeds were planted. They have been enjoying our tomatoes by making pizza, and we had lots of cucumber snacks along with yellow beans. We have a pumpkin squash on its way. Our garden fence has some really nice bird house gourds that we will make into bird houses. We will be making our scarecrow soon, and it will be ready for the Halloween Walk for all to see. Two of our members, Brittany and Gregory volunteered with the ECEV for a few weeks as camp counselors during the summer. Some of our members took long vacations and had lots of fun experiences. Now that school is back in session, we will all be together again in our garden. It has been a wonderful gardening season for all of us.

Farm Camp: This year over 75 youth participated in 3 weeks of farm camp co-‐led by 4-‐H and the Montclair Historical Society. Youth worked onsite at the Montclair Community Farm to learn about gardening, nature, sustainable living, and animal husbandry. Farm Campers also visited the Rutgers Farm, the Foster Fields Historical Farm, and the Sussex County 4-‐H Fair. Summer Science Camp: Teens from Essex/Hudson County joined youth from other urban areas of New Jersey to participate in the Rutgers 4-‐H Science Camp. They spent a week on Cook Campus to learn about life at college, and to gain a better understanding and confidence in pursuing STEM careers. All youth will continue working in the county as Science ambassadors to teach back fun and engaging science activities to younger youth. Their role as science ambassadors is to inspire younger youth to embrace STEM as they did.

Welcome to the 2016-‐7017 New Year! 4-‐H staff and volunteers have been busy helping to connect youth to our agricultural roots. Our summer was full of planting, soil exploration, and harvest with dozens of youth and adult volunteers contributing over 1000 hours of service to our 4-‐H clubs, after-‐school enrichment, and the Urban Youth Farm Project. Thank you to 4-‐H Leader, Jane Kinkle, for putting together our first Essex-‐Hudson 4-‐H newsletter. This issue highlights our summer adventures and includes updates about ways for youth and families to get involved with 4-‐H projects in science, healthy living and citizenship.
Remember, 4-H is for Everyone, Everywhere The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Essex and Hudson Counties. 4-H educational programs are offered to all youth, grades K-13, on an age appropriate basis, without regard to race, color, sex, national origin, or disability. 4-H Mission Statement: The Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program uses a learn by doing approach to enable youth to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to become competent, caring and contributing citizens of the world. This mission is accomplished by using the knowledge and resources of the land grant university systems, along with the involvement of caring adults.
