Iraqis celebrate US pullbackbut bombing kills 33

BAGHDAD, 1 July — Not a single American soldierwas in sight. Gone, too, were the American helicopterswhose buzz has for years defined Baghdad’s backgroundtrack.

Left alone to protect the capital on Tuesday were thou-sands of Iraqi troops and police manning checkpoints, with army tanks deployed at potential trouble spots andconvoys of pickup trucks with machine guns roamingthe streets.

But it was elsewhere, 180 miles to the north, that mili-tants delivered their first deadly challenge to Iraq’s secu-rity forces on a highly symbolic day after the formal with-drawal of US combat troops from cities at midnight.

A car bombing devastated a food market in the city ofKirkuk, killing at least 33 people and wounding 90. Theearly evening attack, which bore the hallmarks of Sunniextremist groups like al-Qaeda in Iraq, was the second inthe Kirkuk area since a truck bombing killed 82 peopleon 20 June. —Internet

‘Oldest musical instrument’ found

The remains of the “firstEuropeans” discovered at anarchaeological site in northernSpain have revealed that theseprehistoric men were cannibalswho particularly liked the fleshof children.

“We know that they prac-ticed cannibalism,” said JoseMaria Bermudez de Castro, one of the co-directors of theAtapuerca project, a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site.

A study of the remains re-vealed that they turned to can-nibalism to feed themselvesand not as part of a ritual, thatthey ate their rivals after kill-ing them, mostly children andadolescents.

Scientists in Germanyhave published details offlutes dating back to the timethat modern humans begancolonising Europe, 35,000years ago.

The flutes are the oldestmusical instruments found todate. The researchers say inthe Journal Nature that mu-sic was widespread in pre-historic times.Music, theysuggest, may have been oneof a suite of behaviours dis-played by our own specieswhich helped give them anedge over the Neanderthals.

BOSTON, 1 July,—ABoston doctor says eatingpeanut butter can be ahealthy choice.

Dr Walter Willett of theHarvard School of PublicHealth in Boston says thepresence of somesaturated fat doesn’tautomatically kick peanutbutter into the camp of“unhealthy foods.”

“Olive oil, wheat

germ, and even tofu — allconsidered to be ‘healthy’foods — have somesaturated fat,” Willett saysin a statement.

“It’s the whole packageof nutrients, not just oneor two, that determineshow good a particularfood is for health.”

Peanut butter hasnutrients including fiberand some vitamins andminerals — especiallypotassium. Unsaltedpeanut butter has a terrificpotassium-to-sodiumratio, which counters theharmful cardiovasculareffects of a sodiumsurplus, Willett says.Even salted peanut butterstill has about twice asmuch potassium assodium.
