National economy relies mainly onagriculture. With the advancingagricultural technique, farmers are tryingfor promotion of cultivation capacity andper-acre high yield and growing qualitypaddy strains.

It is now in mid-November. The rice-growing regions have started harvestingmonsoon paddy as there is no more rain. Many parts of Ayeyawady and BagoRegions are harvesting monsoon paddy. Some areas have already harvested twothirds.

According to weather condition, theremight be untimely rainfall. So, the Ministryof Agriculture and Irrigation has issuednotices on preventive measures against lossand wastage of newly-harvested monsoonpaddy. It is necessary to winnow and storeharvested paddy in a shelter as quickly aspossible.

If harvested paddy is left on anembankment or in another suitable placefor long, it can be broken. As broken paddycan reduce the output rate of rice-milling,paddy should be harvested and winnowedwith the use of machinery.

Winnowed paddy must be first driedand sent to a shelter in time. Otherwise, about three baskets of rice per acre can bewasted. The rice produced can be brokenand inferior in quality.

All in all, by following the notices ofthe ministry, farmers will gain benefitsfrom the high yield of quality paddy.

NEW YORK , 15 Nov — Parts of the Upper Midwest dug out from a heavysnowfall Saturday that caused more than 400 traffic accidents in Minnesota, and wintry conditions also were being blamed for a collision in northernWisconsin that killed two people. Nearly a foot of snow had fallen in parts ofthe Twin Cities area by Saturday evening, downing trees and causing sporadicpower outages.

The storm that began late Friday night was blamed for a collision Saturdaymorning that killed both drivers and left a passenger hospitalized. Thesheriff’s department in Wisconsin’s Bayfield County said the storm produced“rapidly deteriorating road conditions” that likely contributed to the crash.Kevin Kraujalis of the National Weather Service’s Duluth office estimated thatBayfield County had a couple of inches of snow on the ground when thecollision occurred. The meteorologist said the county had about 5 inches asof 6 pm Saturday.

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to 401 crashes as of 4 pm, with 45of them involving minor injuries, Patrol Capt Matt Langer said. There were noother immediate reports of fatalities or major injuries. The storm dumped 11inches of snow in parts of Eden Prairie, Minn, and 10 inches in the Forest Lakeand Mankato areas, said Todd Krause, a federal meteorologist in Minneapolis. The major snowfall activity ended by early afternoon, and Sunday’s forecastlooked milder, he said.—Internet

NEW YORK, 15 Nov — Astronomers have created a new, incredibly detailedmap of dark matter by using the Hubble Space Telescope to peer through ahuge cluster of galaxies as if it were a cosmic magnifying glass.

Though invisible, dark matter makes its presence known through itsgravitational tug on normal stuff. Scientists now calculate that dark mattercould make up 80 percent of all the matter in the universe. The new darkmatter map could reveal secrets not just about dark matter, but about its equallyenigmatic sibling, dark energy. This is the name given to the perplexing forcethat is pulling against gravity, causing the universe to balloon in size evermore rapidly.

The dark matter map was created with observations from the Hubbletelescope of a large galaxy cluster called Abell 1689, located 2.2 billion light-years from Earth. This cluster is famous as a stunning example of gravitationallensing – a phenomenon predicted by Einstein that happens when massiveobjects warp the space-time around them, causing even light to travel on abent path when it passes by.—Internet

BAGHDAD, 15 Nov—Frequent dust storms andscarce rains are stifling Iraq’s efforts to revive a farmingsector hit by decades of war, sanctions and isolation.

Wheat and rice production has suffered from asevere drought in the past two years, due in part to risingtemperatures, along with a dearth of water in the Tigrisand Euphrates rivers.

The UN Inter-Agency Information and AnalysisUnit (IAU) says water levels in the two rivers — Iraq’smain water sources have dropped to less than a third ofnormal capacity.

“The tendency of rainfall in general is continuouslydeclining. The same for temperature ... you can see thereis a rise,” said Deputy Environment Minister KamalHussein Latif.

Farmers like Akram Mousa now face a struggle tokeep their land cultivatable in the once fertile countrywatered by rivers that nurtured Mesopotamia’s ancientcivilisations. “The temperature rise has deformed ourcrops.

They either don’t grow properly or wither. It hasmade me abandon half my farms,” said the 65-year-oldwho owns seven farms of tomato, cucumber and melonin Zubair, in the southern Province of Basra.

Farming is one of Iraq’s biggest employers, butcontributes less than 3 percent of state revenue and getslittle investment compared to the oil sector, the sourceof 95 percent of revenue.
