PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome to “CATS”, the second production of WVLOA’s 44th season. We

hope that you enjoy this wonderful Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway musical, based on T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats”.

Our final production of this season in June/July will be the classic musical by Lerner & Lowe, “My Fair Lady”, based on the popular George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion”.

You’re Invited!!! Whether you are already one of our 1200+ subscribers or here in the Saratoga Civic Theatre for the very first time, we invite you to join us this November for West Valley Light Opera’s 45th season. Because we realize the poor economy has affected the Silicon Valley lifestyles, we have chosen to keep our rates the same as last season. And if you were an AMTSJ subscriber and still have your tickets to “Tarzan”, please call the WVLO Box Office for a special offer at (408) 268-3777.

Look at Our Centerfold!!! Included in this program is a special blue insert, which we invite you to use to subscribe to WVLOA’s 45th musical season. Sub-scribe NOW to ensure good seats and substantial savings over the cost of individual tickets. Current subscribers may also use this form to renew for next season. All subscriptions and individual ticket orders will be processed according to the date on which they are received, but actual tickets will not be assigned or mailed until after this season’s last production has concluded in August.

Let me close by stating that you, the audience members who share your sup-port and enthusiasm for WVLO’s endeavors, make it a truly gratifying experience for all of us involved, both on the stage and behind the scenes. And we extend our special gratitude to those subscribers who have donated additional funds to ensure the excellent quality of sets and costumes that we strive to bring to this stage. We hope that you have a marvelous time at this musical and that you will join us for our future productions.

A Note from the Director

“CATS” is an icon in musical theater, changing the established format of having songs, dances, and dialogue into an operetta on stage without any dialogue, and having the lyrics tell the story, similar to “Phantom” or “Les Mis”. This new form of musical theater was accepted throughout the world as innovative and different.

Today, you will meet the various CATS belonging to a tribe, or family, each one with their own uniqueness. As in any family, there are good members and bad ones. Some are very different than others, yet wanting to be accepted, some wanting to show their power and some magical.

Watch…listen and enjoy! Welcome to the family of “CATS”.—Bill Starr

CELE PINCUSAugust 1932 – January 2009

West Valley Light Opera has lost one of its most faithful volunteers and supporters since she and her husband, Gene, joined our community theater organization in 1973 and co-produced over 20 successful Broadway musicals in this theater until we lost Gene in 2001. Her volunteer efforts have included procuring props, painting and decorating sets, assisting with auditions, pho-tographing our potential cast members, making our “show buttons”, working with costumers, maintaining our mailing and audition lists, providing delicious food for the cast members and ushering whenever the need arose. Her pri-mary task has been managing our Concession stand for the past 10 years, maintaining the inventory of candy, cookies, water, sodas and procuring free coffee from the local Starbuck’s so that we would have the finest coffee to offer our patrons. She always arrived at the theater early so she would have fresh coffee for the first arrivals. Oh yes, she will be greatly missed!

We extend our deepest sympathy to Cele’s family, son Bob, daughter Carrie, her grandchildren and great grandchildren, but especially to her daughter, Judy, who is one of our outstanding Board members and who has served as Costumer for many of our productions since 1981.

If you would like to contribute to the Pincus Memorial Scholarship Fund in Cele’s name, please send your donation to P.O. Box 779, Los Gatos,

95031, and indicate your intention.

and cultural programs such as ours. Here in the Bay Area, we are fortunate to have many companies that have initiated such programs. Remember, matching contri-butions are not automatic. YOU must notify your employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If you are employed by one of these companies and are one of our supporters, take advantage of this wonderful way to support one of your favorite non-profit associations, WVLO. It isn’t too late to match your contribution for this season.

Whenever you donate to a non-profit group like WVLOA, you can double your contribution to the organization by taking advantage of your company’s matching gift program (even after retirement). Perhaps the most popular way for com-panies to make charitable contributions is through a matching contribution pro-gram wherein the company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation one of their employees gives to a favorite char-ity. And often, these companies will only match contributions made to develop arts

Other credits include Martha Jefferson in “1776” in Washington, DC, Chava in “Fiddler On The Roof” and Dawn in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” with the Arlington Players. She extends her gratitude to her husband for his constant support and to friends and family who have been so excited to experience this show.

John Hazen (Old Deuteronomy) This is not only John’s debut with WVLO, it is his first role in the Bay Area. Originally from Chatham, NJ, John discovered music early in life and hasn’t stopped singing since. From leading roles in musical theater to Music Director of the Nassoons, Princeton’s oldest a cappella group, to many groups since. He can always be found singing in two or three groups. In ad-dition to a newly-formed quartet, John currently serves as Tenor Section Leader in Northern CA’s premier barbershop chorus, the “Voices in Harmony” and plays a number of instruments; however, he doesn’t practice enough to play them very well. When he’s not making music, he’s lucky enough to get paid for playing with computers and if he’s really lucky, he gets paid for playing poker online!!!

Mitch Lang (Rum Tum Tugger) Another newcomer to our WVLO family, Mitchell has been a professional dancer for 22 years and most recently appeared in “Honk!” as the villainous Cat (talk about coincidence)!! We’re glad she’s decided to return to our stage!!

Benjamin Perez (Macavity) Benjamin begins his community theater credits with this production, having only just appeared as Herr Schultz in “Cabaret” for OGHS where he graduated last Spring. By day, Jeff teaches 2nd and 3rd grades at Almaden Preparatory School in San Jose. Jeff has the unique distinction of having directed three ERMA-Award winning productions for WVLO – “Flower Drum Song”, “Seven Brides…Brothers” and last season’s “Grease”. The 2007 Wave Magazine Small Theatre Awards were also presented to Jeff for his productions of “Assassins” and “Grease”.

Carolyn Lamcke (Vocal Director) Carolyn joins our WVLO staff for the first time, having been coaxed by her sons, Leslie (Danny Zuko, ERMA Award for “Grease”) and David (stage crew member on “Grease and ASM on “Plaid Tidings”) to be part of our Association. She holds a BA in Music from SJSU and loves teaching music. She is currently studying at DeAnza to be a phlebotomist and EKG specialist. Carolyn plans to continue her vocal directing and teaching career. We’re mighty glad her

boys have such a convincing influence on her theatrical choices. Thanks, guys!!!

Stephen C. Wathen (Production Designer) Stephen returns for his 59th production with WVLO and regular audience mem-bers will remember his impressive set designs from “Grease”, “Joseph…Dreamcoat”, “Honk!”, “Aida”, “Flower Drum Song”, “Seven Brides…Brothers” and many others. He most recently designed the sets for SDG’s production of “Will Rogers Follies” here in this theater. He has designed nine productions for ATC, including “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”, “Assassins” and the

award-winning design for “The Rocky Horror Show” for the past 4 years. Stephen was one of the stop-motion animators of the “Gumby” TV series and worked on special effects for many Hollywood productions, including the “Indiana Jones Tril-ogy” and the original “Star Wars” picture. As a published author, he has written original productions of “Dracula” and “The Three Musketeers” presented by Ohlone College. He recently designed the sets for Starstruck Theatre’s “42nd Street” and SCT’s production of “Frog and Toad”. His career spans over 350 stage productions, 25 movies and a few hundred TV shows. We always feel fortunate when Stephen takes time from his busy schedule to be a part of our staff.

Michael Glenn Munoz (Lighting Designer) Another regular staff member, Michael returns for his 35th production hav-ing just completed all three productions from last season and “Plaid Tidings” from last fall. Other lighting credits outside this theater include SDG, CCMT, SCPL, SCP, Teatro Vision and Woodminster Amphitheater. WHO’S WHO ON OUR STAFFNancy Kwong (Producer/Props) Nancy takes on this produc-tion on her own as Producer, having previously co-produced several musicals with Ed Hand, her Dad. She has an extensive list of credits with this organization, not just as Producer, but as performer and choreographer. Last season she and Ed produced “Grease” which won the ERMA Award for Best Show and she served as Choreographer (her 16th in that position) for our last production of “Plaid Tidings”. She has also been Choreographer

for SCP, SDG, PAP, Tabard Theatre and TheatreWorks, in addition to five produc-tions for ATC, most recently “Assassins” and “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”. As a dancer, she appeared in our productions of “Good News”, “Kiss Me Kate”, “Dames At Sea” and “Rodgers & Hart”. Nancy earned her BA from CSU and her MBA in Speech Pathology from SJSU and applies her knowledge and teaching skills in the OGSD. She serves on the WVLO Board of Directors and is kept very busy with all her activities and those of her two charming boys, Cameron and Riley. Eddie, her husband, also provides support, as well as acting as photographer and graphics designer, in addition to his own theatrical performances.

Bill Starr (Director/Choreographer) Bill returns to a similar WVLO staff position after an absence of 14 years. The produc-tions for which he was Director/Choreographer previously were “Sweet Charity”, “Dames At Sea”, “Where’s Charley”, and “Gypsy”. His impressive list of credits include appearances in 15 original Broadway shows in NYC as well as recruitment by Fortune 500 companies to direct and choreograph many of their industrial shows. Currently, in his 8th year at Stanford

University in the Lively Arts Department, Bill has directed/ choreographed produc-tions for several Bay Area organizations, including “Unsinkable Molly Brown”, “A Chorus Line”, “Narnia”, “Oliver”, “Into The Woods” and in the Spring will begin productions of “Music Man” and “How To Succeed…” . He was the recipient of the Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Outstanding Achievement Award for his work in “Irving Berlin, In Revue” which played in SF. He just completed a production of “Showtune”, the works of Jerry Herman, which started in SF, went on to the Pasadena Playhouse and finally, to London’s West End. Bill dedicates this produc-tion to the memories of Cele and Gene Pincus, the Producers who first introduced him to WVLO. Welcome back, Bill!

Jeff M. Hicks (Music Director) Jeff returns for his sixth produc-tion in a staff position with WVLO, the previous five as Play Director; “Grease”, “Aida”, “Once Upon A Mattress”, “Flower Drum Song” and “Seven Brides…Brothers”. As an actor, he has appeared in several musicals, plays, films and TV produc-tions and co-starred in “Greater Tuna” with Steve Dini this past September. As the Founding Artistic Director for ATC, he has

8 years and “dabbles’ with many different instruments, all of the string variety. The highlight of his career thus far has been performing as a dancer in “Wilkkomenn” at the CPA for the AMTSJ HS Honor Awards. Benjamin strives to earn his Masters Degree in Theatre Arts, pursue a professional acting career and eventually teach his craft to HS students. His special thanks goes to Jennifer Davidson for releasing his potential and inspiring his best work.

Patty Reinhart (Mr. Mistoffolees) Patty returns for her third production with WVLO, after an absence of 14 years. Her last performance was in “West Side Story” as Anita (one of her favorite roles) back in 1995 and before that she had appeared in “The Merry Widow”. We enticed her back to our stage because she’s always wanted to do this show. In the interim, she has appeared in “Joseph….”, “Guys & Dolls”, “Man of La Mancha”, “Cabaret”, and “A Chorus Line”. She earned her BA in Theatre Arts from UCLA with a multiple subject teaching credential and used to teach kindergarten, first grade and PE. Now, she’s just a “Mom” to 8-year-old Aaron. Welcome back, Patty!

Erica J. Rogers (Jellylorum) Erica joins this WVLO production after a theatrical hiatus of 25 years. You’ll understand the gap when you read her accomplishments; she founded two venture-backed companies in the biotech field, was President and CEO of one of them and holds over 13 patents. She is currently VP and General Manager of the Medical Products Division of Nanosys, Inc. A native of Redwood City, she holds a BS in Zoology and her hobbies include cycling, Chinese acrobatics, swimming, ballroom dancing, sailing, scuba diving, backpacking and her husband, Kelly, not necessarily in that order! Her future goals are varied and interesting—to become a CEO again in a medical technology company, learn to walk on her hands, sail Thailand, compete again in ballroom dancing and do another SHOW!!! Erica is very grateful for her husband’s support of yet another exciting adventure.

David Saber (Munkustrap/Narrator) David is back for his second production with WVLO, having just been part of the ensemble in “Grease”. Since his first stage appearance as Kurt in “Sound of Music” many years ago, David has performed in 26 other productions, most recently as Seymour in “Little Shop of Horrors”. He holds BS degrees in Genetics & Biochemistry from University of Wisconsin, and his DC from the PCC. David is currently on staff as a Chiropractic physician at Monta Vista Family Chiropractics in Cupertino. He wanted to be in this show in order to do a dance-intensive show again. We think he found it!!!

Felipé Saldaña-Pettiford (Pouncival) Felipé makes his debut with WVLO and chose this production because it is one of his favorite musicals. His most recent performance was as dancer and Dance Captain of “A Night With The Stars”, but he has also appeared in productions of “Into The Woods”, “Seussical”, “Fame”, “Foot-loose”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Aida”, “Company”, “Working”, “Hair”, “Once Upon a Mattress”, “A Chorus Line”, “West Side Story” and “Cabaret”. A native Californian, Felipé has been dancing since he was a toddler and in later years, singing in various Chamber Choirs. Sven Schutz (Asparagus) Sven is another newcomer to WVLO, having just graduated from OGHS and now attending DeAnza College. All of his previous credits are in his HS productions, “Chicago” (his role of Amos Hart was nominated by AMTSJ for Best Supporting Actor), “Little Shop of Horrors”, “The Wiz”, and “Cabaret” The highlight of his career was performing “Wilkkommen” from “Caba-ret” for the AMTSJ Honors Night. He auditioned for Cats because he wanted the chance to try something different and further his theater experience. Sven plans to continue in community theater and eventually transition to the screen. He extends his thanks to his parents and is dedicating his performance to his friend, Iggy, who passed away last November. RIP, Iggy.

Charlotte Elizabeth Self (Demeter) Charlotte joins WVLO for her debut in this production because she loves the music, loves to dance and especially appreci-ates the opportunity to let the body show pure expression, emoting beyond facial expression and the make-up. Some of her other theatrical credits include “How to Succeed…”, (her most recent appearance), “Jekyll & Hyde”, “Into The Woods”, “Diary of Anne Frank”, “The Scarlet Pimpernel”, “South Pacific” and many more. She earned a BA in Applied Professional Studies: Communications and Theater Arts and is currently employed as a Clinical Assistant for the Santa Cruz Orthopedic Institute. The highlight of Charlotte’s career thus far is being cast in her first role in a show in Nashville, TN, and her favorite roles have been Anne Frank and Hedy LaRue, total opposites, but very challenging.

Emily Steele (Coricopat) Emily is another newcomer to WVLO, but is no stranger to the stage. A ballet student for the past 11 years with PBA, she most recently appeared in “Seussical” at SCP and in PBA’s “The Nutcracker”. When not on stage, she enjoys dancing, knitting, reading and playing clarinet as a sophmore in SCHS’s Wind Ensemble/Marching Band. Having recently celebrated her 16th birthday, she hopes to continue pursuing all of the various forms of art in which she’s involved. Emily is most grateful to her mother for encouraging her to do “Fiddler On The Roof” for SCP in 2004. She extends her thanks to both her parents for being supportive of all her interests and for playing Chauffeur for all of her activities.

Robert Summers (Mungojerrie) This marks Robert’s twelfth production with WVLO, his most memorable being his ERMA Best Supporting Actor Award for Jim (his favorite role) in “Big River” in 2004. Regular audience members will also remember him in “Aida”, “Damn Yankees”, “Will Rogers Follies”, “How To Suc-ceed…”, “A Funny Thing…Forum”, “Camelot”, “Man of La Mancha”, “Music Man”, “Guys & Dolls”, and “South Pacific”. Ian Teter (Skimbleshanks) Ian returns for his fifth performance with WVLO, having appeared as Doody in last season’s production of “Grease”, and previously as Prince Dauntless in “Once Upon a Mattress”, the elevator boy in “Mame”, and the ensemble of “Aida”. He was most recently seen as Brad Majors (his favorite role) in ATC’s production of “The Rocky Horror Show”. His other extensive list of theatrical credits include performances with PAP, PACT, SCP, FMT, STOC, and

Stage 1. His hobbies are tracing his Celtic heritage and roller skating and his future goal is to join the German company of “Starlight Express”. Ian is a cat lover and has always wanted to say, “I performed in “CATS”! Well now he can say that and after being in this show, he wants to encourage everyone to adopt a cat (or dog) from your local animal shelter.

Geno Torres (Bustopher Jones) Geno makes his first appearance with WVLO in this production, but has a long list of theatrical and dance credits. He appeared in AMTSJ’s productions of “Brigadoon” with John Carradine and “Kiss Me, Kate” with Harve Presnell. He also played Paul in “A Chorus Line” with PCLO and Bernardo in “West Side Story” in SF. He started dancing when he was seven with Les Williams in San Mateo; studied ballet with Ron Guidry at the Oakland Ballet School; jazz with Ann Garvin at Dance Synetics Group in SF and toured Japan with “Once Upon a Mattress” in the early 90’s.

Krissy Weston (Jemima) Krissy is another newcomer to WVLO and returning to the stage after a 3-year break from theater. Her most recent appearance was Belle in HLOC’s production of “Beauty and the Beast”. Other credits include perfor-mances in “West Side Story”, “The Boyfriend”, and “You Can’t Take It With You”. She earned her BA in Theatre Arts from SJSU and attended the Actor’s Training Program at Delta College. She teaches voice and piano by day and wanted to be in this production because she has had over 50 pet cats (she only has 12 now) and felt a kinship she couldn’t ignore. Her goal is to earn her Master’s degree in directing so she can direct children’s theater. Her thanks to Grandma for encouraging her to “pounce” back into theatre and all of her “families” for their support.
