    Football is played by m illions of p eople around t he world. As the guardian of the game,FIFA w ith its 209 member associations has a responsibilit y that goes beyond

    FIFA sees it as its missionto contribute t ow ards building a bett er future for the wo rld by using t he power andpop ularity of foot ball.

Since its foundation in 20 0 5, thedepartment has been developing prog rammes and collaborating w ith FIFAdepartments and external stakeholders to m aximise the posit ive and m inimise thenegative impact of it s activit ies on society and the environment.

    Today, FIFA is active through numerous social initiatives, environmental projects andsustainabilit y p rogrammes that are implemented throughout t he year and specificallyfor t ournaments. Act ivities include the developm ent and imp lementation of t he 20 14FIFA W orld Cup Sustainability St rategy , social development programm es such as

    CSR at FIFA is about managing business processes sustainably to imp rove our impacton society and t he environment. This requires a balanced app roach t o socialdevelopm ent, environmental prot ection and economic grow th.

    The FIFA W orld Cup 200 6 in Germany w as the first FIFA t ournament where social andenvironmental pro jects became an integral and of ficial part o f t he event int roduc ing a

    Children Villages raised over EUR 20 million fo r the construc t ion of SOS ChildrenVillages in Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, Sout h A fr ica, Vietnam and Ukraine. Together w ith t heGerman LOC, FIFA launched the environmental pro tection p rogramme Green Goaland

    invested over EUR 40 0 ,0 0 0 into carbon-offsett ing projects.

    These positive outcomes and experiences inspired further social and environmentalprogrammes at FIFA tournaments since then. (For more details please see separate factsheet)

    Over t ime, more issues were added t o t he agenda of FIFA tournaments such as childsafety, informal vendors, recycling, renewable energy, organic catering, and healthpromot ion. It t hen became clear that a more comp rehensive and longer-t erm appro achwas needed t o ensure sustainable tournament s. Discussions wit h the LOC and t hegov ernment for t he 20 14 FIFA W orld Cup had already kicked o ff b y t he end of 20 10 ,earlier than for any other tournament previously. During 20 11, FIFA and t he LOC

    in Brazil, resulting in t he first comp rehensive sustainability st rategy for a FIFA W orldCup. (For m ore details, please see below )

    Furthermore, and in assuring it s com mit ment in the fut ure, FIFA also amended therequirements of t he bidd ing process for t he 2018 and 20 22 FIFA W orld Cups. Allbidders had t o p rovide comprehensive information on how they plan to tackle the

    Collabo rat ion on key social and environment al issues has already started w ith Russiaand Qatar.

    In developing the sustainability st rategy for t he 2014 FIFA W orld Cup, it w as impo rtantfor FIFA and the LOC to define a clear, ambit ious and yet realist ic focus for t heapproach. Staging the biggest single-event sport ing compet ition in the world in asustainable way requires careful consideration of many issues. Moreover, with itsworldw ide reach, the FIFA W orld Cup o ffers a platf orm to raise awareness and highlight

    many social and env ironm ental concerns. Considering all these issues and m anagingexpectations was essential in developing t he current strategy.

    The developm ent of the sustainability st rateg y began in early 20 11 w ith preliminarydiscussions and meetings w ith LOC and g overnment representatives. It w as follow ed bya three-day w orkshop of FIFA and t he LOC in autumn 2011. The basis for t hese

    discussions were the ISO26000 social responsibility guidelines, the GRI reportingframew ork, previous social and environm ental prog rammes at FIFA W orld Cups, the

    FIFA and the LOC have formed a joint 20 14 FIFA W orld Cup CSR Team t o coo rdinatethe imp lementation of t he st rategy and manage relat ions w ith stakeholders. A t ot alinvestment o f approx. USD 20 million will be dedicated by FIFA t o imp lement thesustainabilit y strategy . Further supp ort for t he sustainabilit y effort w ill be provided byFIFA Partners, Commercial Affiliates, and other involved stakeholders.

    Prog ress will be m onito red and evaluated cont inuously b y ext ernal experts, the CSRsteering team, as well as the advisory bo ard w hich will be comp osed of distinguishedand experienced personalities.

    : Many stadiums in Brazil are planning to achieve LEED certificationfor green buildings and many are installing solar panels on their roofs to generaterenewable energy. In addition, FIFA and the LOC will organise certified trainingcourses on sustainable management for stadium managers.

    : The objective of a new waste law in Brazil is to better controlthe handling and the destination of waste. FIFA and the LOC will ensure that waste

    management in stadiums and other venues will be dealt with according to the newregulations and w ill promot e recycling in collaboration w ith local cooperatives.

    welcoming the world to Brazil will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for allparticipants. FIFA and the LOC will organise additional training modules tosupplement the basic volunteer training and help enhance the future employmentopportunities of the participants.

    : Numerous local organisations in Brazil are tackling socialchallenges in their communities with the aid of football. FIFA and the LOC willsupport such organisat ions w ith funding and know - -established Foot ball for Hop e initiative.

    Global warming is one of the most pressing issues of our time. Oneof the main factors in the change in t emperature is the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) t hat isreleased into the atmosphere through human activities. FIFA and the LOC willestimate the carbon footprint of the tournament and develop measures to avoid,reduce and offset its emissions.

    FIFA and the FIFA World Cup Sponsor Yingli Energy will installsolar energy systems that will provide Brazilian communities with renewable energylong aft er the tournament has ended.

    Through its Football for Hope initiative, FIFA will organisevarious forums for community-based organisations in Brazil and abroad to discussand exchange ideas on the effective use of football as a tool to tackle socialchallenges.

    FIFA and the LOC will jointly produce a comprehensive sustainabilityreport according to the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines & Event Organisers
