Annual Report of Chapter Treasurer Due July 15; Changes in 990-N

July is a busy month for chapter treasurers so sharing this information now will help them be prepared: Annual Report of the Chapter Treasurer is due July 15. The 990-N form should be filed with the IRS. Change of Treasurer Form 87 should be sent to

They will need to create a first-time user login and password and then follow the procedures for filing. The old username and password will not work.

Eta State Treasurer Ruth Jones will share more details of the changes during the treasurers’ sessions at the Chapter Leader Seminars in June. The annual report should be mailed to Ruth at 3607 Wyneston Road, Greenville, NC 27858 and the 990-N confirmation should be emailed to Ruth at rjonesdkg@gmail. com. Educational Foundation Preparing for Second Round of Grants

As the NC DKG Educational Foundation prepares for the second round of grants, the Grants Committee would like to thank everyone who submitted grant proposals the first time and remind them that choosing the proposals to which to award the initial grants was a hard decision.

Congratulations again to the 2015-16 grants winners: a Continuing Education grant to Andrea Byers of Delta Chi, and Learning/Literacy grants to Alpha Nu, Alpha Phi, and Delta Zeta chapters.

The Foundation will again be offering grants in two categories:

Professional/Personal Growth Grants Learning/Literacy Grants

Proposals are to be submitted via email to the Grants Review Committee Chair and must be received no later than September 30, 2016. Announcement of grant recipients will made by November 20, 2016.

Proposal Forms and the email address for submitting proposals will be posted on the Foundation website in July. The URL is http://www.ncdkgef.org/.

“The Foundation is excited to partner with Foundation members and Eta State chapters to make possible educational projects that demonstrate creativity and collaboration with teachers, schools, community agencies meeting educational needs,” said Grants Review Committee Chair Maxine McCall.

Hints to Editors: Members and chapters can be planning ahead for their grants, so please include this information so they know the deadlines.

A Note from the Leadership Development Committee By: Linda Little, Chair

Presidents Take Note: Please let your chapter members know we promote leadership development opportunities available to members and in order for us to do this, we need help informing us of workshops, conferences, and seminars that would be of interest to women educators. Please email Linda Little ([email protected]) information regarding dates, location, title, and brief description of the event and this information will be posted on Eta State’s webpage.

June 21 Set as Legislative Day, Members Urged to Participate

By: Susan Phipps, Chair, ELP Committee

The North Carolina General Assembly is hard at work forging our future. Don’t you think you might want to guide its actions by contacting your NC House and NC Senate representatives?

Much is at stake. Raising teacher salaries, retaining re-tirement and medical benefits, increasing per pupil spend-ing, eliminating vouchers for private schools, reducing student testing and revamping school report cards are all issues Delta Kappa Gamma members feel strongly about, based on the recent “Legislative Issues Survey” conduct-ed this spring.

Since the legislature tends to move rapidly during its “short session,” the ELP Committee encourages each DKG member to immediately contact her representatives by phone, email or a personal visit to speak about any of the above issues. To find the name and contact infor-mation for Representatives and Senators, go to www.ncleg.net and click on “Who represents me?” near the top of the page.

On Tuesday, June 21, DKG members will gather at the NC Legislative building at 9:30 a.m. to personally visit lawmakers. If you are interested in joining this group, please contact ELP Committee Chair Susan Phipps at [email protected] for more information. The direction of public education in our state is in your hands. Join us!

Presidents Take Note: This is timely infor-mation and most chapters will not have a meeting before June 21. Please share this info through your phone trees, broadcast calls, or an email blast so members will know about this opportunity to visit lawmakers

and have our voices heard.

Watch for These Graphics

Eta Data is a monthly electronic publication from the leadership of Eta State NC to keep members informed about events, deadlines, and updates. It is geared to chapter presidents so they are knowledgeable about what is happening on the state and international levels and to chapter newsletter editors so they have easy access to state and international news for their newslet-ters. The gavel and pencil graphics are used to call attention to items of particular interest to each group.

“Presidents Take Note:” is used to high-light an action needed or items of specific interest mainly to presidents, to help fos-ter your leadership and make your role easier.

“Hints to Editors:” marks an article, idea or news of particular interest to all members that hopefully editors will find room to in-clude in their newsletters. Editors are free to copy and paste any item from Eta Data in-to their newsletters without crediting the source. Our goal is to make including news from the state and international levels easy for you so your chapter members are kept informed and feel a part of the larger Society.

While chapters are free to forward Eta Data to individual chapter members, it is not written with that in mind. It does not include general infor-mation for all members. That is the purpose of Eta State News, the quarterly state newsletter that does go to all members and includes more chapter level and individual member news. Eta Data is published on the 15th of every month and is posted on the News for Members page of the Eta State website. Back issues for one year are also available on the link. An email is sent to state leaders, chapter presidents and chapter editors when the new issue is posted. Please re-spond to that email so that the editor knows the email reaches you and that you are able to open the link. Please send any email changes to Eta Data Editor Susan Kuenzel at etadataeditor@ gmail.com.

We hope you find Eta Data helpful!

Headquarters Needs Your Support

It is not too late for chapters to make a donation for the upkeep of Headquarters for this fiscal year if they have not already given their $2 per member. Expenses are greater than the donations received thus far. Convention attendees were generous during the Pass the House time but it was not enough to make up the deficient for the year. Chapters may send donations to Eta State Treasurer Ruth Jones at 3607 Wynes-ton Road, Greenville, NC 27858 and note Headquarters on the check.

Something to think about… Summer Reading Fun – Not Just for Kids!

No matter how busy I am, when summer arrives, I start looking for a comfortable spot, preferably outdoors, and a good book. It takes only a moment to be swept away from the rush of real life into pages of mystery, travel, history, suspense.

It’s refreshing to see how many Eta State NC chapters are incorporating book reviews, book exchanges, and book clubs into chapter activities. I have my name on the call-list for a chapter summer book club!

A chapter book club gives members the option of getting together during the summer, for a relaxing, stimulating conversation. One minute you are laughing and chatting about a book and before you know it, you have learned things you didn’t know about the ladies in your group, strengthening the bond of sisterhood. You have practiced your communication skills in a small group setting, giving you confidence to share your ideas in chapter and state meetings. You have strengthened your leadership skills, listening to different points of view and responding with understanding and conviction. And if that isn’t enough, it’s just fun!

Read any good books lately? sheila

Going to International Convention?

Please let Executive Secretary Dr. Barbara Perry-Sheldon know if you or any of your chapter members are planning to attend the International Convention in Nashville next month. She needs the name, email address and cell phone number of all attendees. Please email her the info at [email protected].

International DKG Convention July 5-9, 2016, Nashville, TN

Applications Due September 1, 2016

Cornetet Individual Professional Development Grants Available

DKG members needing funds for individual professional development are encouraged to apply for a Cornetet Grant through DKG Educational Foundation. Of the 45 applica-tions reviewed in May, only 13 were DKG members. Applicants are encouraged to read instructions carefully. Nearly half the applications were disqualified due to incomplete or missing information. This is a wonderful opportunity for members to gain professional develop-ment in areas of their choosing. NC has been fortunate in the past to have a number of grants awarded to Eta State members. Now it is your turn! The grant application can be found at http://www.dkgef.org/awards.html.

Hints to Editors: This is good news for chapter members! Please share it in your next newsletter and tell members this summer if you see them!

“Call Me Country”

If you plan to be in Nashville for the DKG Convention and have not registered for the “Call Me Country” event, a few more spots are available. The fun will be held at the world-famous Wildhorse Saloon in downtown Nashville on Thursday, July 7. The ticket includes transportation to and from the convention hotel, access to all three levels and ac-tivities, dinner buffet, and more. A portion of the ticket price will be tax deductible. This benefits the DKG Educational Foundation.
