Overview

The eText system includes three components: the Content Manager, the Authoring server, and a Viewer application, which is what customers use to view the finished eText. Pearson’s eText is essentially a SWF viewer with an interactive overlay provided by XML. During eText ingestion, hi-res PDFs are processed to generate a set of SWFs for use with the eText Viewer and a set of thumbnail images that will be used to display search results. The PDF is also processed to extract the text contents of the page, which is then distilled to become part of the eText keyword database. In addition, a set of highly-optimized, low-resolution PDFs are generated for use with Pearson’s eText for iPad app.

PDFs sometimes encounter rendering or text extraction issues during ingestion, which need to be resolved before eText production can proceed. Test ingestions can help determine how well a set of PDFs will process. The purpose of this document is to detail the steps for easily creating a test ingestion using the Simple eBook workflow, without using any spreadsheets.

If you encounter technical issues, create a new discussion thread in the Pearson Knowledge Base http://kb.pearsoned.com/eText_Production/Discussions/Test_Ingestions. Provide all relevant information, such as the parent folder name, Global eBook ID, and Book ID as available. Pearson employees can self-register for an account. Vendors need to be sponsored by their Pearson contact.

NOTES• The normal sequence begins with initiation, and then the title

is queued for processing. The PPE Content Manager starts PDF processing, which is when the SWF and thumbnail images are generated. The text is extracted and iPad PDFs are generated.

• Generally, ingestion takes about three seconds per page, depending on the content of a page. Graphically intense pages, especially those with many vector elements, will take longer.

• You can refresh the Workflow Status tab by clicking another tab and then returning to the Workflow Status tab.

• The automated email message may include text and/or XML attachments or links to them. If errors are encountered during the ingestion process, review the ProcessedPagesHTMLReport, which is found in the logs folder of the current version which is inside the eBookCM######## folder that has been automatically created by the Content Manager. The logs subfolder is automatically created within the current version folder during ingestion.
