are entrained towards an upper ,outlet and at least part of the coke on the parficles is com- busted, yielding a flue gas; (c) passing the par- ticles and the flue gas from the upper outlet of each combustion stage into a separation stage, following each combustion stage; (d) separating the flue gas from the particles in each separation stage, discharging the flue gas at the top of the said stage and withdrawing the particles at the bottom thereof; (e) introducing at least a part of the withdrawn particles into the next combus- tion stage subsequent to the separation stage through an inlet near its bottom, thereby starting a new sequence essentially the same as in (a) through (d), at least a part of the particles with- drawn from the last separation stage being dis- charged.

A process for the separation of ethanol from water using solvent extraction at elevated pre- ssures is disclosed. Separation is effected by con- tacting aqueous ethanol with either propylene (propene), allene (propadiene), methyl acetylene (propyne), or methyl allene (1, 2-butadiene). This produces two liquid phases which separate because of the difference in their densities, and are easily drawn off as separate streams. The sol- vent is recovered by distillation and condensa- tion using a heat pump to transfer heat. The ethanol and water remain in a liquid state and are substantially recovered.

This invention relates to an electric-arc fired blast furnace system for the reduction of iron- bearing material utilizing electric-arc heated air containing a reducing gas or carbon-containing fuel allowing for a decrease in the amount of coke normally used in the reduction process. The excess reducing gases exiting the furnace are utilized as a source of power via a system con- sisting of turbines, compressors and a heat ex- changer to drive the electrical generators which are used to provide electricity to the arc heaters. This arrangement forms an essentially closed loop furnace system for metal reduction. Injec- tion of finely-divided coal into the arc-heated air to provide reductants is also employed.
