Ethicalfitnessshouldbethegoalofalljournalists,butitisnotmerelyanacquiredskill.Ittakesconsciencepracticeanddiscussion.Ittakesspecifictraininginethicaldecision‐makingsothatjournalistscan“internalize”thedecision‐makingprocessandsothatsoundethicaldecisionscanbemadeswiftly,underthepressureofdeadlines.
Thistrainingcan,andindeedshould,beginatthehighschoollevel.Everystudentmediastaffiseventuallyfacedwiththequestion–shouldwepublishit?
Mostoften,theanswertothisquestionisnotaclearyesorno(orarightvs.wronganswer),butratherjournalistsaremostoftenfacedwithwhatauthorRushworthKiddercalls,“rightvs.right”decisions.Thisconceptspeakstothecomplexityofdecision‐makinginthemedia.So,withthecomplexitiesofthedecisionsthatneedtobemade,howdohighschooljournalistsdecidewhattopublish?
Thispacketismeanttohelpadvisersofstudentmediateachstudentshowtomakeethicaldecisionsunderpressure.Itpresentsfourdifferentethicaldecision‐makingmodels(adaptedfromthemediatextbookslistedbelow)studentscanapplywhenmakingtheirnextdifficultethicaldecision.Thepacketalsogivesadvisersfourethicalscenariostousewithstudentstopracticetheirethicaldecision‐makingskillsandfoursampleresolutionsforthosescenarios.Allofthisismeanttohelpguideadvisersandstudentsthroughtheprocessofmakingethicaldecisionsthatare“right”forthemasastaff.
