Customs and CelebrationsCustoms: Victory of Adwa day- the day when Ethiopia won the war against the Italians. 

Celebrations January 7th - ChristmasJanuary 19th - Epiphany 

September 27th - The Feast of the True Cross- when a group of Ethiopian with torches come to the city burning down the duplicate of the "Cross" to find which is the real one.

Shelter

    In Ethiopia some people live in cities and then some people live in towns. Most people live on country-sides not urban areas.    What are the houses are made out of?: In Ethiopia a house would not be filled with TVs everywhere and indoor hot tubs. The culture in Ethiopia people like it nice and calm with no electricity and the walls painted and the roof made out of straw, but they do use stone that a lot of countries use.

This is an Ethiopian house.  

Family LifeFamilies in Ethiopia make things together for their homes like: baskets, carpets and blankets.  Sometimes they sell these materials to get money for the family.  The boys learn to hunt from their dads and the girls learn gardening and cooking from their moms.

 

Families play instruments together like the negarit which is a metal or wooden drum with a stretched animal hide. The negarit is performed for celebrations, but has also been used to communicate messages in times of war and distress.  

They also play the massinko which is similar to a guitar but smaller.  

Values

    In Ethiopia dancing is very popular. People would prefer to dance all day every day! Dancing is entertainment, sometimes big groups of people dance together.  Ethiopians like to watch the news for entertainment! A lot of people watch the news because they want to know what the weather will be.

    Running is huge in Ethiopia also! There are a lot of marathons that happen. Now that is a sport to watch!

Food

    In Ethiopia everybody falls in love with spicy food. There's  a whole ton of spicy food.  

     Some foods that a lot of people like are: goorsha, berbere, injera, a spicy chicken called Fit-fit, and coffee.

Clothing

        In Ethiopia, there are many types of clothing. There are certain styles of clothing for different occasions.  You should   wear a poncho when you prey in places of worship. You have to be in dress coat when there are holidays going on like "Black Friday." Black Friday is the day when Jesus died.      When you go out in the wild to work you have to dress properly, so when it is the summer time some people wear jewelry. When it is cold outside you still go out . You always have to go outside and there is always something to do.          They would usually wear long sleeve shirts, pants and they would sometimes wear shoes.

Entertainment, Hobbies, and Sports

    For entertainment people like to play music. A instrument the Ethiopians use are called massinkos! A guitar but much smaller. A lot of people like to play and sing at the same time with the back-round players. 

 

    The sport running (or cross- country) a lot of people do because there are a lot of people from Ethiopia that go to run in the Olympics.
