PANTHER TROPHYOn Tuesday the 7th May, selected students represented Emu Plains Public School in the Panther Trophy Modified Rugby League Knock Out Tournament at Whalan Reserve. Each side played three games of Rugby League with the seniors winning one match. The juniors managed to come away with 2 wins and narrowly went down 16-12 in the semi final. All students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship throughout the day and were congratulated on their impressive efforts and teamwork. A huge thank you goes out to our parents who assisted with transportation to and from the fields and cheered on both sides all day.

WORD OF THE WEEKThis year, Emu Plains is again taking part in our Word of the Week program allowing students to connect with our past and keep the language of the Dharug people alive in the present day. Please encourage your child to teach you the word each week and watch the clips of Aunty Jacinta Tobin speaking in Dharug. During Term 2 we are reviewing words introduced in 2018 so we will have two words each week until we catch up to some new words. The words will be displayed in the classrooms and other places around the school.

SYDNEY WRITERS’ FESTIVAL AT THE JOANLast Thursday a group of Stage 3 students were selected to attend the Primary School Days programme of the Sydney Writers’ Festival at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith. Attendees were enthralled as they listened to four authors (2 Australian and 2 International) speak about their craft. Here’s what some of the attendees had to say about their experience.

“My favourite authors were Megan McDonald (USA) and Oliver Phommavanh (Aust). They were so funny! I had a great time listening to what books they had and a great time with my friends.”

Emily, 5D

“We could purchase books and have them signed by the authors. The authors told us about how they got inspiration and how the books came to be. They gave us tips for becoming a writer and read us parts of some of their books. Altogether it was fun, educational and exciting. I would definitely recommend this festival.”

Olivia, 6S

“The SWF was very intriguing. We learnt things we would never have known. It was very funny. Two of the writers were comedians. A lot of my questions were answered with extreme details. It was super exciting. We had front row seats and all of the writers were basically famous.”

Finn, 6S

“On Thursday we attended a special occasion called the Sydney Writers’ Festival. At the festival four authors came in and talked to us about writing. It took place at the Joan Sutherland Centre and it was really interesting. I would do it again if given the choice.”

Ziggy, 6S

“I think the Sydney Writers’ Festival was an excellent experience, especially for people who aspire to be writers.”

Aled, 6S

“We went to the Joan Sutherland Centre to see the Sydney Writers’ Festival with many amazing authors explaining to us what being a writer means to them. They talked about where and how they got their inspiration. They were kind and funny and had great personalities. It was an amazing experience and we are lucky to be two of those chosen to go! Thank you, Mr Botham!”

Olivia, 5H & Rayanne, 5H

“I had so much fun at the Sydney Writers’ Festival listening to authors tell us about how they made their books and stuff about when they were a kid. We had front row seats!”

Nikita, 5D

“We got to meet authors such as Katherine Rundell (UK), R.A. Spratt (Aust), Megan McDonald (USA) and Oliver Phommavanh (Aust). It was a great experience. We got to see how the authors’ life was before they became authors, and what inspired them to write their books.”

Charisse, 5D

LIBRARY NEWS“Even if your library has only a limited number of books, most kids will find one that will do it for them. But once that connection is made, their thirst for more magic books will only increase as they explore their school and public libraries.”

- Morris Gleitzman

This lovely quote from Australia’s current Children’s Laureate beautifully sums up much of what I have been writing about in this column for the past 14 years. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to share my love of books and reading with the children of Emu Plains Public School in the hope that many will “catch the reading bug” and become life-long readers. It has also been my hope that many parents and carers will see the immense benefit that is gained by sharing books with their children on a regular, if not daily, basis. The evidence is clear: reading for just 10 minutes a day gives children a significant advantage in the acquisition of literacy skills and leads to many social, emotional and financial benefits later in life. The best way to encourage your children to become readers is to read to and with your children, even after they are able to read independently, and to be seen to read regularly yourself.

Recently Kindergarten and Year 1 have enjoyed the following PRC titles:

1. Shutting the Chooks in by Libby Gleeson (PRC#10636)

2. Do like a Duck does! by Judy Hindley (PRC#22706)

Over the past 15 years I have been assisted in the Library by a small team of fabulous assistants, including: Mrs Gwenda Hague, Mrs Lyn Vidler, Mrs Narelle Erskine and Mrs Shirley Langarak. I am also indebted to Mrs Victoria Becus who has worked with me in a voluntary capacity for many years now. Their invaluable support has helped make the Library a dynamic, vibrant space within our school.

After almost 15 years and 3 principals, it is time to say “goodbye.” Thank you Emu Plains Public School for many wonderful experiences and happy memories.

Happy reading!

WINTER PSSA COMPETITIONThe Winter PSSA season will start on Friday 17th May (Week 3, Term 2). The winter competition is played in the middle session of the day and students will leave school around 11am. Most junior games will start at approximately 11.30am and senior games will follow. These times however are only approximate and games may run early or late depending on arrival time of teams.

Sports are played at the following locations:

• Boys soccer played at Jamison Park.

• Girls soccer played at Southlands Oval, South Penrith.

• Netball played at Jamison Park.

• AFL played at Parker Street Oval.

All children who have been selected to represent Emu Plains Public School in the Winter PSSA competition were given a permission note and code of conduct from their coach last week. This permission note and code of conduct must be completed in full and returned to school with the initial payment of $42 by Friday 10th May (Week 2, Term 2). All permission notes and codes of conduct must be completed in full and returned to coaches, for selected students to participate in round 1 of the competition.

Students are reminded that they must wear full sport uniform. Students must also bring along their school hat and wear it at all times when not competing. Students are also expected to bring sunscreen and sufficient water for the duration of the PSSA session.

Some sports require specific safety equipment so that students can participate. AFL players must have mouthguards in order to take the field each Friday. Soccer players must also have shin pads, long socks that go over their shin pads and soccer boots each week. Students who do not bring the appropriate protective equipment are not permitted to play due to safety reasons.

We wish all of our teams the best of luck for the winter PSSA season and look forward to providing these wonderful sporting opportunities for our students.

Mrs Christy Hudson
