EUKARYOTIC CELLSFUNCTIONS OF ORGANELLES
Q1 WK7 D5
Strand 4: Life ScienceConcept 1: The CellPO2: Compare the form and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their cellular components.
CELL MEMBRANE
• Allows certain things in and/or out. ALSO CALLED: SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE
CYTOPLASM (not cytoskeleton)
Area of the cell between the nucleus and the cell membrane
Gel-like material of the cell
SPACE
MITOCHONDRIA(or Mitochondrion)
Transforms energy from organic compounds (food) into ATP. Provides power for the cell
ATP: chemical form of energy that the cell uses
NUCLEUS
The control center of the cellStores the heredity information (DNA)
Nucleolus
• The center of nucleus of eukaryotic cells• The site where ribosomes are made • Composed of proteins and nucleic acids
NUCLEAR ENVELOPE
Allows specific things in / out of the nucleus
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
Moves protein from one end of the cell to the other
Golgi Bodies (or Golgi Apparatus)
Packages and refines proteins
LYSOSOME
Digestive organelle; it has enzymes that removes old organelles & foreign
substances.
VACUOLE
Stores enzymes, metabolic waste and water
CHLOROPLAST
Converts energy from sunlight into organic energy in the cell
*ONLY IN PLANT CELLS
CELL WALL
•Protects the cell
•Provides structure & support for the cell
*ONLY IN PLANT CELLS
CENTRIOLES
Directs the organelles that are involved with cell division (MITOSIS)
*ONLY IN ANIMAL CELLSEnd unit
