ssuper bracing strut (SBS)

The Super Bracing Strut is intended to sustain allowable axial compression loads as shown on pages 6 and 7 over strut lengths up to 30m. The hydraulic extension unit can be fitted with a 125T hydraulic cylinder to assist with the release of the load from the strut after use or to monitor strut loads up to 125T whilst in service. There are two main strut bodies that can be selected: a 400mm SHS and a heavier duty 600mm SHS. 20 No. M30 x 110 long

2. Eurocode Performance Criteria

super bracing strut (SBS)

Rd is the design value of the resistance (be that a force, moment, or shear etc.)

Rk is the characteristic value of the resistance (e.g. axial capacity)

ƔM is the partial factor for a material property

Rd = Rk / ƔM

Fd is the design value of an action (be that a force, moment, or shear etc.)

Fk is the characteristic value of an action (such as permanent load, variable load etc.)

ƔF is the partial factor for actions

Fd = Fk x ƔF x Ψ

Design Standards

The resistance values given in this data sheet have been calculated in accordance with the latest revisions of the following Eurocode Standards:

BS EN 1993-1-1:2005 Design of Steel Structures - Part 1-1: General rules and rules for buildings (+A1:2014) (incorporating corrigenda February 2006 and April 2009), and NA to BS EN 1993-1-1:2005BS EN 1993-2:2006 Design of Steel Structures - Part 2: Steel bridges (incorporating corrigendum July 2009)BS EN 1990:2002 Basis of structural design (+A1:2005) (incorporating corrigendum December 2008 and April 2010)BS EN 1993-1-8:2005 Design of Steel Structures - Part 1-8: Design of joints (incorporating corrigenda December 2005, September 2006, July 2009 and August 2010), and NA to BS EN 1993-1-8:2005BS EN 1993-1-5:2006 Design of Steel Structures - Plated Structural Elements

Other references:BS 5975:2008+A1:2011 Code of practice for temporary works procedures and the permissible stress design of falsework.BS EN 10210:2006 Hot finished structural hollow sections of non-alloy and fine grain steels - Part 1: Technical delivery requirements. Part 2: Tolerances, dimensions and sectional propertiesCIRIA - Special Report 95: The Design and Construction of Sheet-Piled Cofferdams (1993)

Design Philosophy

The capacities of the Super Bracing Struts and their elements have been assessed using Eurocodes and therefore using the limit state design method, which utilises a partial factor method. The principles are outlined below:

The design value of an action effect shall not exceed the corresponding design resistance of the element: Fd ≤ Rd

Where:

Ψ is the combination factor (Ψ0, Ψ1 and Ψ2)

Load factors based on BS EN 1990 + UK NA:

Actions ULS Persistant ULS AccidentalPermanent 1.35 1Variable 1.5 1Accidental N/A 1

Combination factors used: Ψ0 = Ψ1 = Ψ2 = 1

Material factors based on BS 1993-2 + NA: M2 = 1.25ץ M1 = 1.1ץ M0 = 1.0ץ

3. How this Eurocode Data has been Established

This data sheet gives Allowable Axial Compression Loads that may be compared to characteristic/actual loads/effects.

Note that the Overall Factor of Safety (FOS) provided is 1.65 in accordance with the Code of practice for Temporary Works as per BS 5975 as the material factor used is 1.1.

The allowable axial loads in this data sheet are the design resistance values according to Eurocodes divided by 1.5, except for the prop end units. The prop end units’ allowable axial load have been determined by testing.

How to Use this Technical Data Sheeta) When working load effects have not been carried out according to Eurocodes: Use allowable axial load values straight from this data sheet and compare with working load effects.

b) When working load effects have been carried out according to Eurocodes: Apply the principles of the BS EN 1997-1:2004 Geotechnical design to calculate the design load effects in the strut(s).

Providing that design loads (factored) have been produced, then the tabulated values in this data sheet may be multiplied by 1.5 to give the minimum ‘Design Resistances’, being careful to ensure the design load does not exceed the capacity of the end units.e.g. At 21m the allowable load is given as 1730kN. This cannot be factored up by 1.5 to 2595kN as this exceeds the capacity of the hydraulic unit. instead, the allowable axial load must be capped at 1850kN.

strut length(between walings)

The performance data on pages 6 & 7 assumes that the make-up of the strut is in accordance with the user information. In particular: a) The struts are used in combination with Mabey Hire 356 x 368 x 177kg/m U.C. Super Shaftbrace rail or 500 x 460

fabricated U.C. Supershaft Plus rail. b) The strut is square to the waler rail flange in both plan and elevation for standard connections and when pivot units aren’t used. c) The struts are connected with the correct connector plate and clamp arrangement such that the centre-line of the strut is

aligned with the web of the waler rail and end restraint is provided. d) The struts can be connected as a knee brace at angles down to 25 degrees from the waler using the knee brace adaptor plate and up to 30 degrees from the horizontal as a raking prop using the raking prop adaptor. e) The struts can be connected to concrete with Mabey Hire swivel plates. Bolts used in the connections must be designed by the client. f) When using 600mm SHS extensions, a pivot bracket MUST be used at both ends of the strut. Use the SBS-025 when connecting onto Super Shaftbrace rails & the SBS-041 when connecting onto Supershaft Plus rails.

AxialLoad

P

Accidental Loadof 10kN

Self Weight & Debris

The performance data allows for: a) Axial loading in combination with primary bending due to self-weight. b) An accidental load imposed at any point along the strut equivalent to an assumed static point load of 10kN as recommended in CIRIA Special Report 95 (December 1993). c) Secondary moments resulting from: • eccentricity of axial load • an allowance for accumulation of debris on the strut • self weight deflection • an allowance for initial strut curvature • deflection due to accidental loading d) Temperature effects have not been taken into account

Notes:1. All arrangements include 2No. Hydraulic Units (SBS-100) and 2No. Taper Units (SBS-040).2. The weights shown above are based on using SBS-041 connector brackets for Supershaft Plus rails. If using the SBS-025

connector brackets for Super Shaftbrace rails the weights reduce by 40kg. 3. Weights include 2No. Hydraulic Units (SBS-100) without the removable hydraulic cylinder and 2No. Taper Units (SBS-040).
