There were 21% less horses offered than twelve months ago and the aggregate only dipped by 2% from 4,540,700gns to 4,447,000gns. There were strong increases in the average and median, which grew by 32% and 26% to 22,689gns and 17,000gns respectively, while the clearance rate fell from 84% to 79%. Breaking the previous record of 115,000gns as the highest- priced lot for this sale, which was set last year by a Medicean filly, the son of Kodiac lit up the ring when selling for 200,000gns. Offered as Lot 1549 by Charlotte and James Hanly’s Ballyhimikin Stud in Tipperary, he returned an excellent profit on their €25,000 investment for him as a foal from Goffs. Early bids were taken from Stephen Hillen on the rope and Richard Brown at the top of the bidders’ stairs, while Charlie Gordon-Watson was hiding on the right hand stairs. Gordon-Watson said: “He is a very good moving horse and comes from a very good farm. He will go to Ed Dunlop. When I was looking around at horses this morning I was asked for the best horse in the sale and that was the number that I sent, 1549.

“I bought Red Cadeaux at this sale for 55,000gns and he won over 5,000,000 for Ed Dunlop.”

Hand picked for the sale with the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes in mind, Hanly said: “He is a beautiful colt and he did incredibly well all year. We just love the pedigree and hopefully he will be there for the sales race. Tattersalls make a big effort to put on the sales race, so we hand picked a horse that we felt would suit. Edmond [Mahony, Tattersalls Chairman] asked if we could bring him and we wish the purchasers well with him.”

IVORY TAKES FATHER’S ADVICEEqualling the previous record earlier in the afternoon was a son of the Gr.1 Derby winner and Lanwades Stud sire Sir Percy (Lot 1514) that was knocked down for 115,000gns. Trainer Dean Ivory would not be denied for the bay and he saw off a persistent Charlie Gordon-Watson for the colt. Trading blows across the ring, the latter took instructions on the phone by the exit door and Ivory stood prominent on the first row of the bidders. The pair slowed as it hit the 100,000 mark and went up in 5,000 increments until the gavel fell in favour of the Hertfordshire-based handler.

Bred by Chippenham Lodge Stud and offered as part of The Castlebridge Consignment, the good-looking bay is a half-brother to the juvenile winner Miss Sugars (Harbour Watch) and is out of Three Sugars (Starcraft), who also won at two. She is a half-sister to the Listed Prix Volterra winner Kissing The Camera (Galileo) and the two-year-old winner Love And Laughter (Theatrical; dam of the ill-fated dual Gr.1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes winner Wigmore Hall).

Ivory said: “He is a nice strong-topped colt and is a nice walker. My father Ken found him. He had Twin Sails [who was also by Sir Percy and ran within three-quarters of a length of Galileo Gold in the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes]. I am absolutely delighted with him. He is a good-topped-horse and the sire gets nice consistent horses.”

He also added that Twin Sails will be offered here in the Autumn Horses in Training Sale [Lot 793].

LAMB SECURES KODIAC COLT FOR MARTINSEarlier in the day another son of the popular Tally-Ho sire, Kodiac, caused some excitement in the ring when the Acorn Stud-consigned Lot 1388 was knocked down to Jill Lamb for 75,000gns. She said: “I’ve bought him for Julie and David Martin and he will go into training with Charlie Hills. He has been associated with two or three Kodiac colts that are very similar in type and make up to him so hopefully he will go well. He is strong and sturdy and has got a real quality about him. I bought one at Doncaster for Julie that will take a bit of time so hopefully this one will be early.”

Bred by Select Bloodstock and Melchoir Bloodstock, he was a May-born foal and is a three-parts-brother to the Gr.3-winning hurdler Bayan (Danehill Dancer) and three other winners from five runners, out of Kindling (Dr Fong), who won over nine furlongs as a juvenile and stayed two miles to land the Listed Willie Park Stakes the following year. She is a full-sister to the Gr.3 Chester Vase-third Chink Of Light and a half-sister to the Listed Prix Matchem winner and Gr.3 Prix de Guiche-placed Thattinger (Salse).

BUNYAN GETS HIS PICK OF THE FILLIESCurragh trainer Darren Bunyan had been underbidder on a few lots earlier in the day, including a son of Pastoral Pursuits (Lot 1351) that went to Alastair Donald for 57,000gns, but got his pick of the fillies when he landed a daughter of Iffraaj for 70,000gns. Consigned as Lot 1448 by Lodge Park Stud, he saw off interest from fellow trainer Mauricio Delcher-Sanchez, who trained Equiano to win the Gr.1 King’s Stand Stakes. Confirming that the

colt will join the Straight To Victory Syndicate, which has been successful with the recent Gr.3 Curragh Stakes winner Hit The Bid (Exceed And Excel), he said: “She is a lovely filly and she did everything right. She has a lovely pedigree, ticked all the boxes and was the stand out of the fillies today.”

Bred by her vendor, she is out of the unraced Bertolini mare Park Twilight, who is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Seazun (Zieten), the Gr.3 Killavullan Stakes runner-up Albert Einstein (Danehill) and the Listed-placed pair Albertinelli (Danehill) and Mahogany (Orpen), as well as the placed dam of the dual Gr.2 winner and sire Universal (Dubawi).

Delcher-Sanchez got his filly later in the evening, when he went to 60,000gns for a filly by Kodiac, who like the top lot was consigned by Ballyhimikin Stud. Lot 1524, a May-born bay, is a daughter of the winning Cadeaux Genereux mare Violet’s Gift, who is out of a half-sister to the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes winner Carrizo Creek (Charnwood Forest). The Gr.1-winning handler confirmed that she will return to Chantilly to be trained and that she will race in the colours of Maldon Racing, whose two-year-old Kheleyf filly Miss Charlotte won two weeks ago and was claimed at Le Mans, so this is their replacement.

SUPERB PINHOOK RESULT FOR RATHASKERMaurice Burns of Rathasker Stud also recorded a sizeable pinhook result with a daughter of Kodiac, Lot 1384. Purchased for 15,000gns here last year, the first foal out of the juvenile winner Katevan (Heliostatic), she was knocked down for 70,000gns to Jeremy Noseda, who was bidding on behalf of breeze-up ace

Willie Browne. Browne said: “She is very nice and was definitely the pick of the day for me. She looks very quick and her mother got a high rating. She has a nice page and is out of a Heliostatic mare, which wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but he is a good sire.”

A delighted Burns commented: “She’s a lovely filly. The mare was rated 86 and she was a nice horse. She is a lovely horse and was well liked by a lot of people and those ones are easy to sell. She looks like a two-year-old and could be one for the £150,000 Tattersalls sales race.”

Her dam is a three-parts-sister to the Listed Fillies’ Trial Stakes and Listed Eden Stakes-placed Guilia (Galileo; dam of the recent Woodbine Listed winner Goodyearforroses and the Listed-placed God’s Speed) and they are out of the Gr.3 Prix de Psyche-placed Lesgor (Irish River), while the third dam is the dual Gr.1 winner and New Zealand Champion Let’s Sgor (Creag-An-Sgor).

THE ‘NICEST’ MOST IMPROVED FOR RYANBobby Ryan secured four lots on the day and parted with 65,000gns for a colt from the first crop of Coolmore Stud’s Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes winner Most Improved. Consigned as Lot 1572 by Paula and Mark Flannery’s Egmont Stud, who purchased him for €16,000 at Goffs last year, he is out of Beautiful Dreamer (Red Ransom), who is a daughter of the Gr.1 Oaks Stakes runner-up Flight Of Fancy (Sadler’s Wells).

O’Ryan said: “He is the nicest Most Improved that I have seen. I saw him three weeks ago at the farm and was mad about him. He is going to a very good trainer in Keith Dalgleish for a very good owner.”

Asked about the sire, he added: “I never worry about the sire, he was just a very good individual and I will be disappointed if he is not a racehorse!”

OSBORNE BUYS COLT BY FAVOURITE SIRETrainer Jamie Osborne, who enjoyed great success with a son of Thewayyouare in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Toast Of New York, struck for another son of the Gr.1 Criterium International scorer. He went to 60,000gns for Lot 1408, a half-brother to the Gr.3 Round Tower Stakes winner, Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes-third and young sire Cappella Sansevero (Showcasing) from Genesis Green Stud. Standing on the near acorn with agent Federico Barbarini, he saw off interest from Ed Sackville, who was standing in the doorway with Tom Dascombe, and said: “I am slightly biased on the stallion. He is not dissimilar to Toast Of New York, he is big and rangy and has a good action. The mare has already produced a good horse and I find that the decent ones by Thewayyouare are the big rangy ones.”

Regarding future plans for the colt, he added: “I will offer him to Michael Buckley [owner of Toast Of New York, who now stands in Qatar], but he has bought quite a few lately so if not he is for sale.”

GORDON-WATSON GETS HIS GOLDHaving been trying to buy a Havana Gold all week, Charlie Gordon-Watson went to 60,000gns to see off interest from Richard Hughes and secure a son of the Gr.1 Prix Jean Prat winner. Bred and consigned as Lot 1374 by the National Stud, he was offered here last year and was returned to the vendor for 25,000gns, which proved to be a wise decision. Gordon-Watson said: “He is a very nice horse with a nice pedigree. He moves very well, is very athletic and he will run in the same colours as Global Applause [Listed National Stakes winner, Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes-third and Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes-placed, son of Cheveley Park Stud’s Mayson that is owned by Dr Johnny Hon].”

BROWN A BIG BELIEVER IN DELEGATORA big fan of the young Overbury Stud sire Delegator, who is responsible for the unbeaten Gr.3 Firth of Clyde Stakes winner Delectation, Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock went to 58,000gns to secure a son of the Gr.1 2,000 Guineas runner-up. Bought as a foal here for 5,500gns, Lot 1365 provided Kildaragh Stud with an excellent return on their investment. Brown said: “I think the stallion has made a hell of a start from not many runners. He was a quality racehorse and was second to Sea The Stars in the Guineas. As a stallion he could be a star as he gets good-looking stock and I like this colt a lot.”

Bred by the Hon Mrs R Pease, he is out of a placed Pursuit Of Love full-sister to the seven-time winner and Listed Prix du Haras de la Huderie runner-up Lovage and their half-brother Cresson (Kaldounevees) also won seven times and ran third in the Listed Criterium du Languedoc.

and trainers on a budget to, firstly, win with a two-year-old and then have the chance at a big pot in the series final.”

John O’Connor, Chairman, Irish European Breeders’ Fund, said: “We are delighted with the series and pleased with the support it has received from owners and trainers so far. We would like to see it develop into a bigger and better series as time goes on, and the ambition is to increase the number of races and the prize money. We support all maiden races and they can be very competitive and hard to win, so we feel the auction series provides an opportunity to support owners of horses at this lower end of the market. It is our way of supporting those who put into training horses which didn’t cost a lot of money and the final offers a nice prize of €100,000 to aim for at the end of the season.”

The 19 qualifying races held throughout the season are aimed at horses purchased as yearlings or two-year-olds at public auction for not more than €72,000, with allowances for fillies and horses purchased at a lower price. Horses have only to run in one of the 19 qualifying races in order to qualify for an entry in the final.

GERMANY

DEUTSCHES DERBY RESULT STANDSThe result of the Gr.1 147th Deutsches Derby, run at Hamburg on 10th July, was confirmed after a lengthy hearing at Cologne yesterday. Isfahan (Lord Of England) had won that race in a desperate finish by a head from Savoir Vivre (Adlerflug), with Dschingis Secret (Soldier Hollow) a neck away in third. The jockeys on the first two, Dario Vargiu and Frederik Tylicki, were both fined after the race, and also ordered to forfeit part of their winning percentage, for whip abuse, as they were adjudged to have hit their mounts nine times, five is the maximum allowed in Germany. The owner of the third horse home, Horst Pudwill, a German businessman based in Hong Kong, later objected to the winner, alleging that connections had publicly instructed their jockey to hit their horse as often as necessary and that they would cover the costs, but this was overruled by the local stewards. Pudwill appealed against this decision and the appeal was heard in the Direktorium at Cologne on Thursday afternoon, but after five and a half hours this appeal was also dismissed as this allegation could not be proven. His lawyer indicated that Dschingis Secret´s owner may take this further, but for the time being, Isfahan, who has since been retired with a hoof problem, remains this year’s Deutsches Derby winner. FINAL APPROACHING FOR EBF AUCTION RACE SERIESThe final of the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Auction Race Series takes place at Naas this coming Sunday, 16th October, and has attracted 25 entries at the second entry stage, including seven from the Ger Lyons stable.

“I think this series is a great idea and I will support it as much as I can,” Lyons said. “It gives the owner something to aim for at the end of the season. The more of these races the better; it is a great scheme that offers an incentive to get people to invest in the game.”

Multiple entries also come from JJ Murphy, who could be represented by Binary Code (Invincible Spirit) and Massif Central (Arcano). Jessica Harrington, Kevin Prendergast and Johnny Levins also have two apiece and the race is likely to go off with the maximum 16 runners, all hoping to secure the €100,000 prize.

Another strong supporter of the EBF Auction Series is trainer Gavin Cromwell, who said: “This is a great opportunity for owners

PRIX ANDRE BABOIN GOES TO CZECH-TRAINED SUBWAY DANCERFour-year-old Subway Dancer (Shamardal) made his first venture into Stakes company a winning one when landing yesterday’s feature race at Lyon Parilly, the Gr.3 Prix Andre Baboin. The only one of the seven-strong field without previous black-type form, he won by a convincing three and a half lengths from Master’s Spirit (Mastercraftsman), who had been Listed-placed twice two seasons back, with last month’s Saint-Cloud Listed victrix Alakhana (Dalakhani) a short-neck back in third.

The winner, who had failed to reach his reserve when led out unsold for €60,000 at the Arqana October Yearling Sale, was purchased by Chris Richner Bloodstock for a mere €3,000 in the same sales ring last November as an unraced three-year-old. He was unplaced on his debut at Hyeres in March this year and had won two of his eight subsequent starts in France, though he is trained by the Czech-based Zdeno Koplik.

He was bred by Haras de Saint Pair and is the third foal of the Galileo mare Sub Rose, who ran twice at three and won both times, a debutantes’ race at Longchamp and the Gr.3 Prix du Royaumont just over a month later. In a perfect striking position as the field turned for home, he visibly lengthened his stride to take the lead 300m out and, once in the clear, left his rivals trailing to power home by two lengths. Will Pays (Imperial Stride) just held second from a late-charging New Predator (New Approach).

The four-year-old’s latest success sealed a feature race hat-trick, which started with a maiden Stakes win in the Gr.2 Post Merchants, followed by an equally impressive score in the Gr.3 Spring Spree Stakes, both over 1200m.

Carrying the silks of Mrs Joyce Wallace, the progressive six-time winner now boasts career earnings of R880,775, with the promise of more to come. A step up in trip also looks well within his scope and his connections may just aim him at next month’s Gr.2 Charity Mile.

Bred by Mrs Wallace’s late husband, Kangaroo Jack is a fine advertisement for popular young Maine Chance stallion Querari and is out of the Stakes-winning Model Man mare Rainbow Flag. Likewise campaigned by the Wallaces, she landed the Listed The Scarlet Lady and was runner-up in the Gr.1 Garden Province, Gr.2 Gold Bracelet and Gr.3 Yellowwood Handicap.

JOBURG SPRING FILLIES & MARES CHALLENGEThe Gr.2 Joburg Spring Fillies & Mares returned a major upset when the rank outsider Mella Maria shocked her rivals with a bold, front-running victory over the same distance as the colts’ version. Making her seasonal debut off a two-month rest, Mike Azzie’s charge entered this race firmly under the radar at 45-1, courtesy of her uninspiring recent form.

Having won the battle for the lead, she turned for home a length in front of her fancied stable companion Lazer Star (Toreador) and found another gear to extend that to a good couple of lengths at the quarter mark. The favourite Hollie Point (Silvano) briefly loomed dangerously on her outside, but that

rally proved short-lived and it was a rampant Bella Sonata (Silvano) who became her main danger. She unleashed a furious challenge up the inside rail, but Mella Maria tenaciously held her late flourish by about a neck. Visuality (Visionaire) ran on strongly to finish half a length behind in third.

Ironically, the winner’s generous starting price belied her juvenile and early three-year-old form. Third in the Gr.3 Pretty Polly at two, she went down by just a whisker when second to Madame Dubois (Count Dubois) in the Gr.3 Starling Stakes almost a year ago. She subsequently lost her way and ended the season by finishing last, beaten 16 lengths, over the Scottsville 1200m.

From the first crop of the Gr.1-winning sprinter Star Witness, the Australian-bred Mella Maria is also the first foal of Sayahailmary (Keep The Faith), one of a pair of Gr.2-placed performers out of the Danehill mare Danish Moon, who traces to the outstanding racemare and broodmare Gold River. The Champion older mare of Europe in 1981, she completed the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Prix du Cadran, Prix Royal-Oak treble and produced the Gr.1 winner Riviere D’Or, who in turn is the grandam of the exceptional racemare Goldikova.

MATCHEM STAKESCaptain America [pictured next page] proved there is no substitute for class when he returned from a six-month layoff to land the spoils in the Gr.3 Matchem Stakes run at Durbanville. Notwithstanding his lengthy absence, the sole Gr.1 winner in the 11-strong line-up was the warm favourite for the 1400m event contested under WFA conditions and he duly stepped up to the plate.

After stalking the pacesetter Blarney Bay into the straight, jockey Corne Orffer gave the strapping gelding his head a furlong out and he moved smoothly into the lead. Challengers were by now bunching up behind him and, in the end, it was sheer class that made up for a lack of racing fitness, as Baritone (Trippi) came flying up on the outside to fail by less than a half-length at the line.

SOUTH AFRICA RACING & BREEDING NEWS ~ CONTINUED

Winless in five starts since his score in last season’s Green Point Stakes, this victory certainly served as a huge confidence booster for Captain America and trainer Brett Crawford indicated his charge will follow a similar campaign this summer: a defence of that mile event, followed by the Queen’s Plate and the Met.

A millionaire three times over, the eight-time winner was bred at Varsfontein Stud. By the champion sire of 2014-15, Captain Al, he is a half-brother to the Gr.3 Jacaranda Handicap victress Aquitaine (Al Mufti). His dam, Requista (Fort Wood), is a Gr.3-placed half-sister to the Gr.2 Gold Bracelet victrix Cruise Collection (Model Man) and to the Prix du Cap winner Dacha (Russian Fox).

Lightly-raced – this was just her seventh outing – the winner had not run since taking the Listed Stormsvlei Mile in May, having opened her Stakes account in the Listed Sweet Chestnut Stakes a month earlier. Spare a thought for Goodtime Gal, for on both occasions she chased home Andre Nel’s talented runner, who now has the Gr.1 Majorca Stakes on her radar.

Captain’s Flame completed a quick-fire Stakes double for her sire Captain Al, her victory coming hot on the heels of Captain America’s score in the preceding Matchem Stakes. Remarkably, both were out of Fort Wood mares.

Captain’s Flame, a R1.2-million yearling purchase from breeders Cheveley Stud, is out of Kindling, who had earlier produced the Gr.2 Tibouchina winner Fragrant Al to the Klawervlei stalwart and also counts the Listed winner Rekindle (Saumarez) amongst her five winning foals.

Kindling is a half-sister to the accomplished Gr.3-winning sprinter Fine Feather (Best By Test), who produced the Gr.1-placed sprinter Barbosa to Captain Al and is also the dam of the Gr.3 Byerley Turk winner Phantom Fighter (Jet Master). This is the immediate family of the Champion fillies Velozia and Historic Lady.

There are no features this weekend, as the country builds towards the end of month Stakes races in Cape Town, the important prep races for the forthcoming Classics, the Gr.2 Cape Championship and Cape Classic races run on Saturday, 29th October and the following day, Port Elizabeth’s biggest day, the ten-furlong Gr.3 Algoa Cup.

Captain America’s class prevails in the Gr.3 Matchem Stakes.

DIANA STAKESMrs Sabine Plattner’s Captain’s Flame, a dual Listed winner in her last two starts, stepped up another gear to complete a Stakes hat-trick in the Gr.3 Diana Stakes. Always prominent, the four-year-old pounced at the furlong mark and drew clear under Aldo Domeyer to score by the best part of a length from Goodtime Gal (Royal Air Force), who just held off the fast-closing Come Fly With Me (Jet Master) by a short-head.

GERMAN THOROUGHBRED NEWS

PRESENTED BY

WINTERFAVORITEN RUNNERS HAVE EYES ON NEXT YEAR’S CLASSICSAt this time of the year, interest turns to the next generation, the two-year-olds who might make the grade for next year’s Classics. Last Sunday at Dortmund, Gestuet Karlshof’s Alwina (Areion) won her second sales race in a row and now heads to Baden-Baden for the Gr.3 Preis der Winterkonigin. The most important test for two-year-old fillies in Germany will be decided in a week’s time and her trainer Henk Grewe thinks she is up to the task.

Markus Klug also has two intended runners; Colomano (Cacique) was second in a sales race at Dusseldorf on his only start and Ming Jung (Kallisto) – which is not Chinese, but means “My Boy” in the Cologne dialect – broke his maiden in Dresden on his third appearance.

THE LONGEST FLAT RACE IN GERMANYAndreas Lowe, who will pass the reins of his stable to jockey Andreas Suborics next year, also has two runners. His Ardashir (Hat Trick) finished behind Colomano when fifth at Dusseldorf, while Fulminato (Excelebration) won on his debut at Bremen, but was fifth behind Navarra King at Baden-Baden.

Real Value (Rip Van Winkle), from the Mario Hofer yard, was third in the same race and is also among the favourites with RaceBets. Without Navarra King, Peter Schiergen has to rely on Enjoy Vijay (Nathaniel), although the Gestuet Ittlingen colt will need to improve quite a bit on his first two runs. The same applies to Sant Angelo (Areion), who is trained by Henk Grewe. He was third in Cologne on his last start behind the favourite Langtang.

Another highlight on Sunday will be the Listed Silberne Band, at 3,850m (two miles and three furlongs) the longest Stakes race on the Flat in Germany. There are nine runners and the Swiss-trained Hectormare (Hurricane Run) is the market leader. Monica Muller is the trainer of the seven-year-old gelding.

GERMAN RUNNERS OVERSEASSince his convincing win over Nightflower (Dylan Thomas) in the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Berlin in mid-August, the six-year-old Monsun entire Protectionist has been sidelined with an injury, but he has now recovered and his trainer Andreas Woehler has sent him over for the Gr.1 Canadian International at Woodbine. He is likely to face other European starters such as Idaho (Galileo) from the Aidan O’Brien yard and the Queen’s runner Dartmouth (Dubawi) from the stable of Sir Michael Stoute.

Woehler is also busy Down Under, as Articus (Areion), like Protectionist now owned by Australian Bloodstock, will compete in the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup. Among his opponents there is the Gestuet Schlenderhan-bred Our Ivanhowe (Soldier Hollow) and another fancied runner from the O’Brien stable, Sir Isaac Newton (Galileo).

Nightflower will be heading to Japan in November. The reigning Horse Of The Year received her invitation to Tokyo after winning the Gr.1 Preis von Europa for an historic second time in a row; no filly has managed that feat before. “We still have a score to settle,” her jockey Andrasch Starke said, referring to last year’s unlucky run in the Japan Cup when the filly was blocked for a run when it mattered.

At Cologne in September, Parvaneh (Holy Roman Emperor) finished fourth behind Nightflower and the three-year-old will run in the Gr.1 E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday. She is one of the outsiders, while the favourite is, naturally, by Galileo, and trained by O’Brien – the promisingly-named Best In The World.

PETER MUEHLFEIT

The Gr.3 Preis des Winterfavoriten, the most important race for two-year-old colts in Germany, will be run this Sunday. Sadly, just days before the Cologne highlight, news came that Navarra King (Lope De Vega), winner of the Gr.3 Zukunftsrennen, had broken a leg in training and had to be put down.

This has changed the picture of the race completely, as the unbeaten Navarra King was the clear favourite. As expected, horses trained by Andreas Woehler have taken over the market and the new favourite is Langtang (Campanologist) and his stable companion Empire Star (Siyouni) is also fancied. Langtang won his maiden at Cologne after finishing second at Baden-Baden, while Empire Star finished second on his debut in Munich.

Last year, Woehler won the Winterfavoriten with Isfahan (Lord Of England), while his supposed first string Noor Al Hawa (Makfi) was well beaten. Isfahan has now been retired to stud, his Gr.1 Deutsches Derby victory having been his final start, and his victory in the Classic has improved the recent record of the Winterfavoriten. Normally the winner becomes the Derby favourite over the winter, but, Isfahan apart, one has to go back to 1983 to find a horse that won both races, namely Lagunas (Ile De Bourbon) from Gestuet Fahrhof.

Nevertheless, there are a number of big names who have won the race which was established in 1919; the Prix Jacques le Marois winner Lirung (Connaught), the seven-time Gr.1 winner Lando (Acatenango) and the 2007 triple Gr.1 winner Manduro (Monsun) are among them.

Navan last November, but was not seen again until finishing unplaced at Aintree in April.

He was bred by A V Bloodstock and is the first winner out of the placed Saddlers’ Hall mare Hapeney, a half-sister to five winners. The grandam, Pennys Pride (Pips Pride), won four races and is a half-sister to the multiple Gr.1-winning chaser Direct Route (Executive Perk) and the dual Gr.2-winning hurdler Joe Mac (Topanoora).

The following race, a Gr.3 chase over three miles and a furlong, went to the De Bromhead-trained Sadler’s Risk (Sadler’s Wells), who headed the frontrunning favourite Lord Scoundrel (Presenting) three fences from home and kept on well to beat him by five and a half lengths and claim his first Stakes victory. The outsider Federici (Overbury) was a distant third, while Gr.1 winner Clarcam (Califet) and Gr.2 winner Smashing (Smadoun) were further behind.

Sadler’s Risk, a Smythson-bred eight-year-old and a 35,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling Sale graduate, had won twice on the Flat when trained by Mark Johnston. At four, he moved to Philip Hobbs, for whom he won over hurdles at Kempton, then had a second spell with Johnston before moving to his current trainer in January 2014. This was only his eighth start over fences, a discipline at which he finished second in Gr.3 company as a novice and ran third in the 2015 Galway Plate.

Bred to win a Classic, he is a three-parts-brother to the Gr.3 Dance Design Stakes winner Say (Galileo) and is a son of the Dynaformer mare Riskaverse, a triple Gr.1 winner in the US. His third dam Toll Fee (Topsider), a Stakes-winning half-sister to the Champion US Sprinter and sire Plugged Nickle, is the grandam of the US Horse of the Year Havre De Grace and third dam of the four-time Gr.1 winner and young sire Tonalist.

De Bromhead said of Sadler’s Risk: “I’m delighted with that. He did it really nicely and it was a super ride from David [Mullins]. He was in right at the weights and the handicapper got it spot on. He’s better going right-handed than left; he really struggles going left-handed. He probably won’t run on winter ground, but I’ll have to speak to Roger [Brookhouse, owner].”

“He’s a really exciting horse,” was his comment after the earlier victory by Three Stars. “He was a 140-rated hurdler and has got a gear. I was delighted to see him get the two miles two, as I wasn’t convinced he would. He’s got options now, with either the Craddockstown back here or the race in Cheltenham the week before.”

1Tell us a bit about your background/experience prior

to attending the National Stud? I come from a non-horsey family and had no experience of racing or the bloodstock industry. I completed a BTEC in Horse Management after leaving school and spent several months working as a riding instructor before deciding I wanted to get involved in breeding horses. I bought a book on careers with horses and found an article on the National Stud Diploma Course, so decided to apply.

2What experience got you your current role?

After the National Stud I spent a year working as a stud hand at Darley before applying for a junior administration role with the EBF. I worked in this role, with primary responsibility for monitoring race results and compiling statistics, for a number of years before being promoted.

3What does a typical day involve? What are your key

responsibilities? My day varies according to the time of year. In the early part of the year we are chasing yearling and two-year-old registrations, in the summer it is early stallion registrations and checking sales entries before moving on to sales results and final stallion registrations at the end of the year. My main responsibility is the

registration of British-based stallions with the EBF. It is my job to ensure that as many stallions as possible are registered and that each pays the correct fee (calculated according to stud fee and number of mares covered). I am also responsible for reporting to the Board of Trustees on any issues that affect the EBF and implementing their decisions regarding the British EBF’s extensive race programme – currently over 600 Flat races and 80 Jump races each year – as well as keeping the EBF website up to date and running the EBF Twitter account.

4What do you think are the most important skills for

someone in your role to have? Attention to detail is crucial, particularly when checking sales entries or calculating fees for stallions. Enthusiasm for the industry is also key; we are lucky in that we deal with both the bloodstock and racing side of things and being able to talk with a stallion owner about how their season has gone or discuss a

two-year-old’s prospects with a trainer’s secretary is a useful skill.

5Describe the aspects of your job you find most rewarding?

6What were the best bits of the course you attended?

Meeting the other students, who came from all over the world, was fantastic and I’m still in touch with several of them now. I really enjoyed the lectures that we were given, as it helped build up my

knowledge of the industry and, of course, what’s not to love about being present at the birth of a foal. I followed many of “our” foals through their racing careers and am pleased to say that several went on to be decent racehorses and one or two are now top-class broodmares!

7What do you think are the benefits of attending an NS

course? The opportunity to attend lectures from experts in their field and meeting the other students are high on the list, as well as gaining an industry-recognized qualification.

8What one piece of advice would you give to someone

seeking a career in the industry? It’s a cliché but: work hard, don’t be

afraid to get your hands dirty and ask

lots of questions!

9What are your future career plans?

I’m very happy working at the EBF right

now and whatever the future brings I

certainly intend to remain in the racing

industry.
