A WEEKENDIN THE SOUTHWEST

PLYMOUTH

Plymouth is the largest city in the South West, with a population of over 250,000, and offers everything you would expect from a thriving and energetic community.

Plymouth has some of Europe’s most spectacular countryside and beaches and Plymouth’s enviable location between Dartmoor National Park and the sea makes it the ideal place to study, visit and live.

Plymouth enjoys a combination of rural charm and modern city living, and is about 3 hours by train from London. The University is set in the heart of the city with shops, facilities and attractions nearby.

WHAT TO DO?

The South West of England offers an exciting array of activities and attractions.

You could visit the National Marine Aquarium and be amazed by the fascinating underwater world in the UK’s largest aquarium attraction.

Or pop down to St Austell and see the Eighth Wonder of the World, the Eden Project where dramatic global gardens are housed in tropical biomes that nestle in a crater the size of 30 football pitches.

See the wonders of the wild world at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park which is home to more animals than anywhere else in the South West.

If you are a fan of Rasamunde Pilcher then why not visit Mullion Cove which was featured in: ‘Amazing Grace,’ ‘A Secret to Tell’ and ‘Another View’. The historic fishing cottage on the quay provided shelter from the storm, the old boat house the love scene in ‘Toby’ and the cobbled quay the location for the horses going by in ‘Carousel. You might also like to see St Michaels Mount, Penzance and Lands End too.

The beautiful Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park offers great coastal walks around the grounds of this impressive estate and the local pub does some great food.

St Ives is a seemingly subtropical oasis where the beaches are golden, the vegetation lush and the light piercingly bright. The Tate St Ives gallery is here and offers a lively programme of international modern art.

Next to Plymouth is the beautiful and dramatic Dartmoor National Park where you can undertake a vast array of outdoor activities or simply relax and enjoy the view.

If you prefer good food, fun bars with live music and a bit of history then Plymouth’s Historic Barbican is the place for you. This is where the famous Plymouth Gin Distillery is located so why not take the tour then try the gin as well.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

These pages contain extra information that you may find useful during your stay in Plymouth.

Don’t forget our Euroman team are happy to help you in any way they can during your time in Plymouth so feel free to ask for help if you need it.

INTERNET ACCESS

In your accommodation: You have free unlimited cabled internet access and Wi-Fi coverage in your Halls of Residence.

On campus: You have free unlimited Wi-Fi access across the entire university campus for the duration of your course. We will provide log-in details when you arrive and our IT team can help you set-up your laptop, tablet or mobile devices.

ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

The electricity supply in the UK is 230 volts with a frequency of 50 Hertz. If you buy or bring electrical appliances (laptop etc) with you, make sure that they are connected to a plug fitted with a fuse of the correct rating.

Alternatively, make sure you bring an adaptor with you that will work in the UK. You can buy these once you arrive in Plymouth too.

CLOTHING

We recommend a casual/informal dress code for the academic sessions, field trips and social activities you will undertake. We also recommend that you pack a waterproof jacket as it does rain a lot in Plymouth.

The course dinner takes place in a 16th century manor house so you have the option to dress more formally (shirt, tie, suit, dress) for this fun event. However, this is completely optional and you can dress casually if you would prefer.

IF YOU ARE ILL

If illness or personal problems are affecting your time with us, you should contact Mike Pengelly or Sarah Skinner who will provide assistance.

If you are taking medicines, please make sure you bring adequate medication for the duration of the Euroman course.

CRIME & PERSONAL SAFETY

Plymouth University and the City of Plymouth are safe places but please use your common sense when travelling around the campus and city. Keep your personal belongings close to you, do not carry large amounts of cash with you and do not keep large amounts of cash in your room.

EMERGENCY!

If you have a problem or an emergency during your stay in Plymouth, please feel free to contact me:
