I Introduction

The 3PL industry is an evolving landscape, with the increasing demands of customers driving the trends.

The growing need for businesses to diversify and outsource their logistics activities as supply chains increase in complexity and fragility has validated the role of 3PLs in every aspect of logistics.

While 3PL providers consolidate their operations primarily to expand their capabilities across sectors and regions, it is also a means for larger players to overcome fragmentation and claim a larger slice of the market. For smaller players, it is a basic route to survival.

However, the entry of global players, one-stop-shop providers, integrators and 4PLs is taking the competition to the next level. Mergers and acquisitions are almost commonplace, and in today’s 3PL industry, it’s very much a case of ‘survival of the fittest’.

In an effort to establish the nature of the difficulties faced by the European 3PL industry, eyefortransport conducted the European 3PL Market survey during July 2005.

Much of the data gathered in the survey will be discussed and debated at the 3rd eyefortransport European 3PL Summit 2005, which takes place on October 26-27 in London.

For more information on the eyefortransport survey results or the conference, contact Izabela Janecka at 1 800 814 3459 ext. 252, [email protected]

II Survey overview The survey was conducted via the Internet, and responses were solicited by targeted e-mail lists, select trade association memberships, various related-industry databases and other targeted methods. No individual responses were analysed, but rather all responses were consolidated.

The aim of the survey was to identify the main challenges for European 3PLs, as well as the best potential opportunities in the different geographical regions, industry segments and market verticals. Respondents were asked a number of questions to establish the biggest challenges and key concerns facing 3PLs in Europe. They were also asked to identify potential opportunities, and whether they have or plan to deploy RFID in their operations.

III Profile of respondents participating in the survey

Over two hundred and fifty logistics professionals from 3PLs, freight forwarders, carriers, warehouse operators, shippers and technology providers responded to the survey.

The chart below shows the distribution amongst the respondents for this survey.

IV The main challenges for European 3PLs

Maintaining profits under price pressures from customers is a major challenge for European 3PLs, with 87% of the survey respondents saying it was a ‘big challenge’ (44%) or a ‘very big challenge’ (47%). For 3% of the respondents, this is not their key concern.

Globalisation of the 3PL market and the need to deliver services in new geographic regions is a big or very big challenge for 64%, but is not perceived as a challenge at all by 2% of the respondents.

Another serious challenge for almost half of the respondents is competition in the form of giant global 3PLs (49%) and the ability to delivery the latest cutting edge technology to customers (44%).

The emergence of 4PLs / LLPs is only a seen as a challenge by (37%) of the respondents.

V Opportunities for growth in the European 3PL industry

The survey revealed that one of the biggest opportunities for growth lies in providing technology / IT solutions to customers, with more than two-thirds of the respondents saying it is the best opportunity (20%) and 45% saying it is still a good opportunity.

Reverse logistics (63%), global freight management (62%) and 4PL / LLP services (60%) are almost equal in respect of presenting opportunities to 3PL providers.

Freight audit payment and general warehousing are only considered as ‘best’ opportunities by 7% and 4% (respectively) of the survey respondents.

The total number of respondents who rated WEEE directives opportunities as good (25%) or best (7%) is equal to the number who said packing / picking are good (26%) or best (6%) opportunities.

VI Potential growth per geographic region

Respondents were asked to rate the geographic regions which they consider to have the greatest growth possibilities for their companies within the next two – three years.

Exactly half of the respondents said that China has the “most” growth potential for their companies, with another 27% saying it had significant potential. A quarter of the respondents believe that India holds the most growth potential for their companies, while 22% think this is true for Eastern Europe.

South America and the Middle East are only considered by 3% of the respondents to hold any significant growth potential for their companies.

VII Potential growth per vertical market

Respondents were asked to rate the vertical markets which they consider to have the greatest growth possibilities for their companies within the next two – three years.

84% of the respondents said that the hi-tech/electronics sector holds the key to potential growth for their companies, while 81% say it is the industrial sector.

Retail and FMCG/CGP is considered by 79% and 77% respectively to offer the greatest growth potential for the respondents’ companies. While the food sector isn’t rated highly, 33% of the respondents feel it has reasonable potential.

Over 30 executives fromEurope’s leading 3PLswill be sharing theirviews and discussing thefuture of the 3PLindustry with you – donot miss out on yourchance to take part inthis debate!

The European 3PL market isalready mature but it is stillgetting biggerLogistics expenditures directed to outsourcing are predicted to rise by 7% in Western Europe between 2007-2009. 9th annual 3PL trends and issues report (Capgemini and Dr. John Langley, Jr. PhD)

BUT “3PLs cannot rest on their laurels” according to Dr. Langley, there is a“need to implement capable IT, institute effective management andrelationship processes, integrate services and technologies globally anddeliver comprehensive solutions that create value for 3PL users and theirsupply chains.”

On 26-27th October you will have the chance to meet and networkwith over 200 senior-level logistics executives, while learning fromthe leading European 3PLs and Shippers.

“ Networking and open opportunities to discuss a variety of topics with many people from the transportation industry.”Lorenzo Fornaroli Transport Optimisation Manager Gillette – attendee 3PL Summit 2004

Join the premier 3PL event – the 3rd European 3PL Summit.

Do you know what your customers reallyexpect from you?

Today’s logistics customers are extremely sophisti-cated, and are demanding a higher level ofcustomized performance from their serviceprovider. As the supply chain has increased incomplexity, so have the expectations of additional3PL expertise. Customers want to see their 3PLs asstrategic partners, with more involvement in thelogistics decision-making process and their ownoperations, and with expectations of a broaderrange of capabilities.

This year you will gain insight into your customers’expectations from Gillette, Kimberly-Clark, IBM,Avon, and Solectron.

What are the value-addedservices your customers wantyou to provide?

3PL users continue to have high expectations fromtheir 3PL providers in terms of service offerings andIT capabilities. Warehousing, sub-assemblies,kitting, repackaging, freight box auditing anddesign, pick/pack, labelling and new technologysolutions seem to be a must for most of 3PLproviders.
