BSc Orthopaedic Science 1999 Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore Thesis: Deer antlers: a new approach to the attachment of transcutaneous artificial limbs. Anand B. July 2001. The biological features of deer antlers were studied. I looked at the mechanics, histology and surface morphology of antlers and the antler pedicle/soft tissue interface. Features identified in this study could be engineered into orthoses to aid the development of transcutaneous artificial limbs. Patents obtained on design features that I demonstrated in this work. Technical skills acquired include: undecalcified bone histology, imaging techniques (SEM, radiography) and various mechanical testing modalities and approaches

The effect of Gortex membranes around fractures to aid guided bone regeneration. July 2001 Anand B and Blunn G. Miniature bone tumour prosthesis were inserted into rat femora and Gortex membranes covered the fracture site in the test groups. Controls and test group were assessed at 2, 6 and 8 weeks to look for differences in bone and soft tissues around implant. No significant difference found. Problems with surgical technique for implanting prosthesis identified.
