DEAR COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS,A warm welcome to the 32nd Annual Congress of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology (EACTA) in Berlin.
Comprehensive Cardiovascular Cardiothoracic Care (C4) is the core theme of this EACTA Congress. In a rapidly evolving field of cardiovascular medicine, our profession is continuously challenged: by the progress in cardiac surgical techniques as well as by the increasing demands of interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic intensive care medicine. Thanks to this, Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology has become even more attractive, but also more demanding: we are no longer recognized solely as anaesthesia providers, but as members of a team of dedicated specialists involved in the comprehensive periprocedural surgical as well as interventional treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease .
The Scientific Subcommittees of EACTA and the Local Organising Committee have set up a program dedicated to cover many aspects of these challenges, ranging from pre-procedural decision making and optimization to intra-procedural management and post-procedural care. Recent technical and pharmacological developments specific to our field are presented, and a broad range of in-depth educational sessions and workshops offered. Furthermore, oral and poster presentations will allow discussions on recent scientific findings.
The exponent in C4 – our abbreviation of the congress theme Comprehensive Cardiovascular Cardiothoracic Care - may also be interpreted in a figurative sense as “fourth dimension“. In the literature the fourth dimension is used to “signify the unfathomable to someone with earthly (or three-dimensional) concerns“; something we cannot see on a first glance. Extending this idea, every panel has a dedicated C4-lecture that will discuss the main topic of the panel in a broader sense, criticising conventional views, detailing contradictory findings, or adding unexpected perspectives to stimulate discussion.
We hope you will experience the scientific program of the 32nd Annual Congress as exciting and stimulating, will find time to meet and talk with the numerous attending experts in the fields of cardiac, thoracic and vascular anaesthesia and critical care medicine, and of course meet colleagues and friends from all over the world and enjoy Berlin with its broad range of cultural and entertainment offers.
We cordially welcome each of you to the EACTA Annual Congress 2017 in Berlin.

TRapibloc® 20 mg/2 mL: Rapibloc® 20 mg/2 mL concentrate for solution for injection. Composition: Each ampoule of 2 mL concentrate for solution for injection contains 20 mg landiolol hydrochloride. After dilution the concentration of the solution is 2 mg/mL landiolol hydrochloride. List of excipients: Hydroxypropylbetadex, macrogol 300, ethanol 96 %, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, disodium phosphate (anhydrous), potassium dihydrogen phosphate, water for injections. Rapibloc® 300 mg: Rapibloc® 300 mg powder for solution for infusion. Composition: A vial of 50 mL contains 300 mg landiolol hydrochloride. After reconstitution each mL contains 6 mg landiolol hydrochloride (6 mg/mL). List of excipients: Mannitol E421, sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment). Therapeutic Indication: Landiolol hydrochloride is indicated for supraventricular tachycardia and for rapid control of ventricular rate in patients with atrial fi brillation or atrial fl utter in perioperative, postoperative, or other circumstances where short-term control of the ventricular rate with a short acting agent is desirable. Landiolol hydrochloride is also indicated for non-compensatory sinus tachycardia where, in the physician’s judgment the rapid heart rate requires specifi c intervention. Landiolol is not intended for use in chronic settings. Contrain-dications: Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients, severe bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, severe atrioventricular (AV) nodal conductance disorders (without pacemaker): 2nd or 3rd degree AV block, cardiogenic shock, severe hypotension, decompensated heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, non-treated phaeochromocytoma, acute asthmatic attack, severe, uncorrectable metabolic acidosis. Undesirable effects: Common: Hypotension, bradycardia. Uncommon: Pneu-monia, hyponatraemia, cerebral ischemia, headache, cardiac arrest, sinus arrest, tachycardia, hypertension, pulmonary oedema, vomiting, nausea, liver disorder, ECG: ST segment depression, cardiac index abnormal, abnormal laboratory parameters: ALT/GPT, AST/GOT, blood bilirubin, white blood cell count, red blood cell count, hae-moglobin haematocrit, platelet count, blood lactate dehydrogenase, blood urea, blood creatinine, blood creatinine phosphokinase, protein total, blood albumin, blood sodium, blood potassium, blood cholesterol, blood triglycerides, protein urine present. Rare: Mediastinitis, thrombocytopenia, platelet disorder, hyperglycaemia, cer-ebral infarction, cerebrovascular accident, seizure, myocardial infarction, ventricular tachycardia, atrial fi brillation, low cardiac output syndrome, atrioventricular block, bundle branch block right, supraventricular extrasystole, ventricular extrasystole, shock, hot fl ush, asthma, respiratory distress, respiratory disorder, bronchospasm, dyspnoea, hypoxia, abdominal discomfort, oral discharge, breath odour, hyperbilirubinemia, erythema, cold sweat, muscle spasms, renal failure, acute kidney injury, oliguria, pyrexia, chills, chest discomfort, administration site pain, blood pressure increased, electrocardiogram T wave inversion, electrocardiogram: prolonged QRS complex, heart rate decreased, pulmonary arterial pressure increased, PO2 decreased, neutrophil count abnormal, blood alkaline phosphatase abnormal, leukocyte alkaline phosphatase, free fatty acids abnormal, blood chloride abnormal, glucose urine. Not known: Application site pain, injection site reaction, sensation of pressurePrescription only/available only from pharmacy. Date of revision of the text: August 2016. Marketing authorisation holder: Amomed Pharma GmbH, Storchengasse 1, 1150 Wien, Austria.

Root with SedLine and O3 provides a more complete picture of the brain through an instantly interpretable, adaptable, and integrated display.
> SedLine brain function monitoring helps clinicians monitor the state of the brain with bilateral data acquisition and processing of EEG signals that may help clinicians with anaesthetic management
> O3 Regional Oximetry helps clinicians monitor cerebral oxygenation in situations where pulse oximetry alone may not be fully indicative of the oxygen in the brain
