EDITORIAL BY THE SECRETARY GENERALThe importance of internet infrastructure

The 2020 EAAP Annual Meeting will be virtual. There are many aspects to properly

organizing a virtual conference but the infrastructure, mainly the internet connection,

has a key role. It is easy to say that the internet will be even more the main issue for

future activities of scientists, either to carry out research, to exchange views, or to partly

substitute scientific conferences.

In the last two months the internet is experiencing a large “stress test” for the increased use

of the network because of the strategies implemented to contain the pandemic. We think

that the current situation is not a problem but a great opportunity, as it will lead companies

and governments investing in network infrastructure. At the end of the emergency, the

network will be even more developed and robust. Likewise, scientific dissemination will rely

even more on internet connections. Our optimism, however, brings up another important

critical point, namely the impact of the digital divide. Many countries in recent years

have not made adequate investment in the internet and, even within countries, there is

large variation between areas with adequate connectivity and others, more peripheral,

sparsely populated and poorer with mediocre infrastructure.

We cannot expect support from the sector companies because they are not interested

in offering a minimum of quality and, in mutual agreement, avoiding being competitive

in unattractive areas, dividing the territory effectively. This is a potentially very disturbing

scenario as it will impede the full freedom of use making the internet such a valuable tool

for scientific dissemination. The risk is that researchers, living already at the margins of

digital evolution, will experience the natural consequence of further increasing the gap

not only digital, but also scientific. The stakes are related to the ‘utilization evolution’ of

what has fully become an essential resource.

EAAP 2020 Annual Meeting will go virtual!

As it is well known by now, the Porto EAAP 2020 Annual Meeting will not be held on-site in the traditional structure, but it will be virtual. The decision is due to the uncertainty about the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulty in making plans about hosting a major International conference. EAAP cares about the safety of delegates, exhibitors, sponsors and hosts. We have however decided, given the evolving nature of the pandemic, to reach you wherever you are. EAAP Session will be virtual to arrive in your office, house or where you have your computer. We are currently planning the technical details for the organization of such an event. The current strategy is to keep a similar scientific structure as for the traditional on-site meeting to be organized in the last months of this year. The Book of Abstracts will be prepared as per usual. There will be virtual sessions with speakers and participants. This is a new virtual direction for the EAAP Annual Meeting to offer the animal science network the best opportunity to share their research in the most updated and scientifically advanced forum in the world. Everyone will receive in the next weeks, via the EAAP website and email notifications, detailed information about how to register, present researches and simply how to participate to the virtual event.

the Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the Food Security Center (FSC) of the University of Hohenheim in Germany and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under the Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation (EXCEED) program. Since January 2020, Dr Shumo assumed a new role as an R & D in the Insect Technology Center of Germany’s first insect as feed mass producing company, Hermetia Baruth GmbH where she is responsible for the company’s contributions to project SUSINCHAIN, an EU H2020 funded project that aims to increase the economic viability of the insect market by overcoming existing obstacles to scaling up the insect value chain in the EU. Dr. Shumo joined the EAAP in the year 2018 and was recently elected a Young Scientist board member in the EAAP Study Commission on Insects. Apart from her avid interest in insects, Dr. Shumo is a science communicator, slammer and blogger. You can take a look at her research and travels blog diary at the following link https://blog.zef.de/?author_name=marwa and watch her latest video communicating her research at the following link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph4guRPDjP8. In her free time, Dr Shumo enjoys organizing art workshops by mixing elements of Arabic calligraphy with contemporary abstract painting. A visit to the Hamamm is her most prioritized get into the weekend ritual. While, she enjoys travelling to new places and learning about new cultures, her home Muscat, Oman remains to be the place she’s whole heartily connected to.

During her doctoral research, she was a working member of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) funded project EntoNUTRI and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) funded project INSFEED. For her excellent work during her doctoral research, she received magna cum laude from the examination committee, one of the members being Emeritus Professor Arnold van Huis of Wageningen University, undoubtedly the ‘father’ of the insects for feed and food school. Her research interests and expertise focus on the use of insects as food and feed as well as in the bioconversion of organic waste. She is also interested in alternative and urban agricultural production systems especially in the developing world. Marwa’s work has already attracted substantial national and international recognition as she appeared in numerous international meetings, workshops, conferences, wrote blog post after blog post, gave speeches at innumerous events, even made President Frank-Walter Steinmeier publicly taste insects. For instance, she was selected by the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings to attend the 70th Interdisciplinary Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (27 June – 2 July 2021) and by the Falling Walls Foundation to give a presentation on her research at the Falling Walls Lab Finale in Berlin (08 November 2016). She taught a group of international PhD scholars a module entitled “Edible Insects – The Future of Food” within the agenda of the 2019 summer school “Transformative Changes in Agriculture and Food Systems” that took place in Los Baños, Philippines and was jointly organized by

Dairy cow supplement for milk with a lower carbon profile

Adding 1% or less of a dried supplement of the red seaweed Asparagopsis armata to the diet of dairy cows, can reduce their methane emissions by up to 90%, research suggests. For dairy farmers this could mean producing milk with a lower carbon profile. Read the full article on DairyGlobal.

Are we optimising labour enough on pig farms?

In every company, there is a clear division of tasks. Most people know exactly what their job is and how to do it. On pig farms, proper job management is more important than is often acknowledged. Why is it so important to think about this? And which questions matter? Welfare
