European Innovation Partnership on Active & Healthy Ageing : A new initiative in service of Preventive Health Planning and Adherence
1
The European Commission Innovation
Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing
has called on the public and private
sectors to join forces in support of
improving and protecting senior health in
the EU.
Sanofi Pasteur MSD, the leading vaccine
company in Europe, is responding with an
initiative aiming to improve seniors’
adherence to prescriptions and medical
plans.
Specifically, the new initiative aims to
tackle a major cause of disease in the
elderly: immunosenescence, or the
decline of immune function with age.
Seniors are at higher risk of catching and
2
suffering severely from infectious
diseases due to immunosenescence and
multiple health conditions.
The initiative will establish a state-of-the-
art, expert-furnished web portal to
educate and inform health care
professionals and seniors about
preventive health options, and provide
personalized tools to empower good
choices in nutrition and vaccination.
Sanofi Pasteur MSD is committed to
bring together the right expertise across
the continent behind this cause,
including the Commission partners and
new public health institutions and
industry partners at national and regional
levels.

The Challenge
The Focus on Prevention Sanofi Pasteur MSD has joined the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing as the first vaccine industry partner. The company’s project focuses on prevention of health issues related to the aging body’s naturally weakening immune system (immunosenescence). The project will bring together medical experts, public health institutions and diverse and innovative industries to provide seniors and their care givers with information, education and personalized health tools that will foster good choices, including nutrition and vaccination.
The European population is aging rapidly. The
number of people over 65 will double in the next 50
years, and the number of people over 80 will triple.
The anticipated economic impact is significant. By
2020, there will be only two active citizens in Europe
for each retiree, down from a four-to-one ratio today.
What’s worse, people are living longer, but not more
healthfully with about 20% of their life spent in ill
health.
The Solutions
The European Innovation Partnership on Active and
Healthy Ageing connects and catalyzes public and
private sectors behind this challenge. Partners work
on projects to deliver social, technological, and
organizational innovation with the goal of increasing
the healthy lifespan of EU citizens by 2 years.
The partnership focuses on three pillars:
• Improving quality of life for seniors • Supporting health care system sustainability • Fostering economic growth and EU industry
competitiveness through innovation

health tips to help prevent the consequences
of immunosenescence.

Over time, the platform will also offer users
the opportunity to create and securely share
a personalized, preventive electronic health
record with information about subjects like
immunisation and nutrition.
Health authority endorsement of the
platform’s content will be key to its success.
The platform will be developed and tested in
pilot EU sites with an anticipated launch in Q4
2014.
Through the platform, health care providers
will receive high-quality, European-
2
recognised training on immunosenescence
and prevention, which will encourage good
practice habits and communication skills.
The highly educational nature of the platform
will also contribute to better patient health
literacy, empowering individuals to be actors
and take responsibility for their health and
increasing their willingness to be protected
from preventable infectious diseases.
With both health care providers and patients
better informed on the same health topic, the
physician-patient relationship can improve,
increase trust, efficiency, and compliance
with health-related actions.
Through better understanding of
immunosenescence and use of
prevention methods, the project will
contribute to promoting active and healthy ageing of our European senior
citizens while containing healthcare
expenditures.
Several partners have already shown high
interest in joining the initiative : The
University of Maastricht, geriatricians,
infectiologists, nutritionists, the former WHO
coordinator of vaccine R&D, and two
