European lift industry gets ready for LIFTEX 2019

Now in its 31st year, LIFTEX 2019 will once again be the meeting place for the European lift industry. Organised by the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA), the event takes place only once every three years. This year, it runs from 15-16 May 2019 at London’s ExCeL.

Building on the success of what was consider an outstanding 2016 event, 2019 is shaping up to be even better. LIFTEX Show Director Oliver Greening explains, “LIFTEX 2019 really has been three years in the making. We have more European and international exhibitors than ever before and have created a dynamic business environment for the industry. With uncertainty and changes in standards ahead — plus ongoing challenges with modernisation — our free seminar programme will equip you with the tools and knowledge you need.”

Free Seminar Programme

Running alongside the exhibition is the free seminar programme, offering the latest guidance and advice on hot industry topics. Sessions include:

The future development of British, European and International standards in our industry

With work on several British standards, a raft of updates and revisions scheduled for several standards in the EN 81 family, and progress toward a global International standard, this session will signpost the key changes and their implications for the lift industry in Europe and beyond.

Speaker: Ian Jones, Codes Director - EMEA, OTIS, Chairman, MHE/4, BSI Committee for Lifts, Hoists and Escalators and Chairman, LEIA Quality & Technical Committee

Lifts for Evacuation Use: Key considerations for building design and modernisation planning

Evacuation of people with disability or impaired mobility should now be at the forefront of building design and modernisation planning. In this session, the use of lifts for evacuation and the relevant guidance will be explored.

Speaker: Matt Ryan, Associate Director, The Fire Surgery Limited

Analogue to fibre: Understanding the options for lift emergency-communication phones

Regulations require that emergency-communication devices be available for passengers to call for help in the event they become trapped in a lift. Traditionally, this requirement has been met with the use of fixed landlines as the means of transmission for lift emergency calls. However, BT have already begun to transition to a fibre-digital network with the target of an all-digital network by 2025. In this session, the significant implications of this change will be discussed and the options available will be outlined.

Speaker: Matt Davies, Market Insight and Innovation Manager-Americas & EIMEA Avire, and Member, European Lift Association Tele-Alarms Working Group

Revision of BS EN 81-80: Improving the safety of existing lifts

The new BS EN 81-80:2019 reflects the changes in BS EN 81-20 and experience gained with the original 2003 standard. This session outlines the key changes and the principles of how to apply this crucial standard.

Speaker: Dave Searle, National Technical Manager, KONE, Member, LEIA Quality & Technical Committee Member MHE/4, BSI Committee for Lifts, Hoists and Escalators and BSI delegate at CEN TC10 WG1 and WG10.

LIFTEX 2019…are you going to be there?

“This year’s LIFTEX is gearing up to be the best yet”, said Oliver Greening, LIFTEX event director. “There is such a buzz around the show from the industry that we have been adding new stands to the floorplan to keep up with the demand. Visitor registration is looking good, and there is a lot of chatter about the show across social media.” Taking place on May 15-16 at ExCeL in London, LIFTEX has more exhibitors than ever before, with 30 attending for the first time. International exhibitors are coming from 18 different countries, and there will be thousands of innovative products on show, some of which have never been seen before at a U.K. event.

2019/2 Issue 99 • ELEVATOR WORLD UK 37

There will also be more seminars than ever — eight free sessions this year. Starting at 11:30 each day and running concurrently, they include:

Dave Searle, LEIA Quality & Technical Committee member, addressing the neww BS EN 81-80: 2019, which has significant changes from the original 2003 standard: the session will outline the key changes and refresh the guidance for specifiers on how they should apply this crucial standard to prioritising safety improvements as part of a lift modernisation.

John McSweeney, director, Terry Lifts, and LEIA Personal Lift Group Committee member, focusing on the important considerations when specifying vertical lifting equipment for the home: this includes essential factors to be aware of when advising clients.

Len Halsey, Canary Wharf Contractors, and CIBSE Lifts Group chairman, looking at goods lifts and the secret life of buildings, another first for the show: moving materials in and out of buildings is critical to their operation, but we need to keep this vital provision in mind. This session will highlight key considerations in planning and managing the use of lifts to move goods around buildings.

Matt Ryan, associate director at The Fire Surgery Ltd. on fire safety and its importance in building design: evacuation of people with disability or impaired mobility should now be at the forefront of building design and modernisation planning. The use of lifts for evacuation and the relevant guidance will be explored. The programme will end with a panel discussion and question-and-answer session.

Dave Cooper, managing director, LECS UK, will begin the next day of sessions by talking about escalators and the issues for duty holders, including maintenance, examination and guidance on modernisation: many of the thousands of accidents on escalators every year result in criminal or, more often, civil claims against the owner of

the escalator. There is, of course, an onus of duty of care on escalator owners to ensure their equipment is appropriately specified, properly maintained and adequately examined. However, owners often fall foul of this because of insufficient documentary evidence clearly demonstrating it has fulfilled its duty. This seminar will seek to address these issues and offer a clear understanding of what the responsibilities are.

Matthew Davies, market insight and innovation manager — Americas and EIMEA, Avire, and European Lift Association Tele-Alarms Working Group member, updating visitors on the switch from analogue to fibre for

lift emergency communication phones: this follows Ofcom’s recent review, which

included a request for the promotion of fibre-to-the-

premises investment and support. Davies will explore

the options available to comply with these upcoming changes.

Nick Mellor, LEIA managing director, again joining the lineup to provide guidance in “a survival guide for lift

managers and duty holders” by highlighting their legal

obligations and sources of guidance and support in meeting

their duties.Ian Jones, chairman of BSI’s MHE/4

Committee for Lifts, Hoists and Escalators and the LEIA Quality & Technical Committee, rounding

off the programme, by focusing on the future development of British, European and international standards in the industry: with work on a number of British standards, a raft of updates and revisions scheduled for several standards in the EN 81 family and progress toward a global International standard, the session will signpost the key changes and their implications for the lift industry in Europe and beyond.
