About EU
Message from
Tomasz Kozlowski, EU Ambassador to India
The European Union is an official partner of the 12th edition of the Annapoorna World of Food 2017. Over thirty companiesfrom 11 Member States of the European Union (EU) are present. They offera great variety of excellent food and drinks including fresh or processed fruit and vegetables, seeds and nuts, oils, bakeryproducts, snacks and desserts, herbal products, dairy and meat products as well as energy drink, beers and wines.
Food is at the centre of Europe's identity. Each of the 28 Member States of the European Union and every EU region has oneor more food or drink products, or recipes, associated with it. This generates an important consumer interest in food, and italso instils a sense of local pride. 500 million Europeans enjoy the highest food quality and safety standards in the world. Ourconsumers benefit from a huge variety of excellent and affordable food.
Our food is at the root of a vibrant European agri-food sector, which supports more than 44 million jobs in the EU. Since2011, our agri-food exports have grown by 29%, outpacing all other sectors. We are now exporting €131 billion of produce -with a surplus of €18.8 billion. This is not just a figure - it is a huge amount of wealth being transferred to rural areas acrossEurope, in reward for the production of high quality, sustainable food and drink products.
The EU and India have strong commercial ties. Although the EU is currently a modest partner for India in agricultural trade, itsurely has a big potential. The EU exports to India in 2016 reached some EUR 850 million. On the other hand, imports fromIndia to the EU have approached EUR 2.8 billion. As the current agri-food trade balance between the EU and India shows, there is a big margin for improvement for the EU exports to India in this sector. Therefore, improving market access in thissector remains a high priority on the EU agenda.
By presenting these European products at the Annapoorna World of Food Fair we do not only wish to encourage a widerdistribution of European products in the Indian market, but we also would like to inspire the Indian consumers to add EUflavours to the already very rich Indian culinary tradition, by experimenting with new products when cooking at home.
I wish the Annapoorna World of Food Fair a lot of success and hope that besides enjoying the European delicacies, fruitfulbusiness exchanges will take place, not only to benefit both the EU and Indian economies but also to showcase the widerange of agricultural products Europe has to offer to Indian food lovers.
European Food and Beverages QualityEU quality schemes for agricultural products
Agricultural products produced in the European Union reflect the rich diversity of different traditions andregions in Europe. To help protect and promote products with particular characteristics linked to theirgeographical origin as well as traditional products, the EU created quality logos, named "ProtectedDesignation of Origin", "Protected Geographical Indication" and "Traditional Speciality Guaranteed".
Protected Geographical Indication – PGI – identifies products whose quality or reputation is linked to the place or region where it is produced, processed or prepared, although the ingredients used need not necessarily come from that geographical area. All PGI products must also adhere to a precise set of specifications and may bear the logo on the left.
Protected Designation of Origin – PDO – identifies products that areproduced, processed and prepared in a specific geographical area, using therecognised know-how of local producers and ingredients from the regionconcerned. These are products whose characteristics are linked to theirgeographical origin. They must adhere to a precise set of specifications andmay bear the PDO logo on the right.
Traditional Speciality Guaranteed – TSG – identifies products of a traditionalcharacter, either in the composition or means of production, without aspecific link to a particular geographical area.
